1 Jesus was passing through Jericho. He entered Jericho and was passing through. Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through.
2 A man named Zacchaeus was there. He was the director of tax collectors, and he was rich. And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy.
3 He tried to see who Jesus was. But Zacchaeus was a small man, and he couldn't see Jesus because of the crowd. And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd.
4 So Zacchaeus ran ahead and climbed a fig tree to see Jesus, who was coming that way. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.
5 When Jesus came to the tree, he looked up and said, |Zacchaeus, come down! I must stay at your house today.| And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.”
6 Zacchaeus came down and was glad to welcome Jesus into his home. So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully. So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.
7 But the people who saw this began to express disapproval. They said, |He went to be the guest of a sinner.| And when they saw it, they all grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”
8 [Later, at dinner,] Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, |Lord, I'll give half of my property to the poor. I'll pay four times as much as I owe to those I have cheated in any way.| And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”
9 Then Jesus said to Zacchaeus, |You and your family have been saved today. You've shown that you, too, are one of Abraham's descendants. And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.
10 Indeed, the Son of Man has come to seek and to save people who are lost.| For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
11 Jesus was getting closer to Jerusalem, and the people thought that the kingdom of God would appear suddenly. While Jesus had the people's attention, he used this illustration. As they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately. While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once.
12 He said, |A prince went to a distant country to be appointed king, and then he returned. He said therefore, “A nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return. He said: “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return.
13 [Before he left,] he called ten of his servants and gave them ten coins. He said to his servants, 'Invest this money until I come back.' Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Engage in business until I come.’ So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. ‘Put this money to work,’ he said, ‘until I come back.’
14 |The citizens of his own country hated him. They sent representatives to follow him and say [to the person who was going to appoint him], 'We don't want this man to be our king.' But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’ “But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We don’t want this man to be our king.’
15 |After he was appointed king, he came back. Then he said, 'Call those servants to whom I gave money. I want to know how much each one has made by investing.' When he returned, having received the kingdom, he ordered these servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by doing business. “He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it.
16 |The first servant said, 'Sir, the coin you gave me has earned ten times as much.' The first came before him, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made ten minas more.’ “The first one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’
17 |The king said to him, 'Good job! You're a good servant. You proved that you could be trusted with a little money. Take charge of ten cities.' And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.’ “’Well done, my good servant!’ his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’
18 |The second servant said, 'The coin you gave me, sir, has made five times as much.' And the second came, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made five minas.’ “The second came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned five more.’
19 |The king said to this servant, 'You take charge of five cities.' And he said to him, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’ “His master answered, ‘You take charge of five cities.’
20 |Then the other servant said, 'Sir, look! Here's your coin. I've kept it in a cloth for safekeeping because Then another came, saying, ‘Lord, here is your mina, which I kept laid away in a handkerchief; “Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth.
21 I was afraid of you. You're a tough person to get along with. You take what isn't yours and harvest grain you haven't planted.' for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man. You take what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’ I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’
22 |The king said to him, 'I'll judge you by what you've said, you evil servant! You knew that I was a tough person to get along with. You knew that I take what isn't mine and harvest grain I haven't planted. He said to him, ‘I will condemn you with your own words, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow? “His master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow?
23 Then why didn't you put my money in the bank? When I came back, I could have collected it with interest.' Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’ Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?’
24 The king told his men, 'Take his coin away, and give it to the man who has ten.' And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ “Then he said to those standing by, ‘Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’
25 |They replied, 'Sir, he already has ten coins.' And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten minas!’ “’Sir,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’
26 | 'I can guarantee that everyone who has something will be given more. But everything will be taken away from those who don't have much. ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. “He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away.
27 Bring my enemies, who didn't want me to be their king. Kill them in front of me.'| But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.’” But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me.’”
28 After Jesus had given this illustration, he continued on his way to Jerusalem. And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
29 When he came near Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives (as it was called), Jesus sent two of his disciples ahead of him. When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them,
30 He said to them, |Go into the village ahead of you. As you enter, you will find a young donkey tied there. No one has ever sat on it. Untie it, and bring it. saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here.
31 If anyone asks you why you are untying it, say that the Lord needs it.| If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’” If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”
32 The men Jesus sent found it as he had told them. So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them.
33 While they were untying the young donkey, its owners asked them, |Why are you untying the donkey?| And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
34 The disciples answered, |The Lord needs it.| And they said, “The Lord has need of it.” They replied, “The Lord needs it.”
35 They brought the donkey to Jesus, put their coats on it, and helped Jesus onto it. And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it.
36 As he was riding along, people spread their coats on the road. And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road. As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road.
37 By this time he was coming near the place where the road went down the Mount of Olives. Then the whole crowd of disciples began to praise God for all the miracles they had seen. As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:
38 They shouted joyfully, |Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven.| saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, |Teacher, tell your disciples to be quiet.| And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”
40 Jesus replied, |I can guarantee that if they are quiet, the stones will cry out.| He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.” “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”
41 When he came closer and saw the city, he began to cry. And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it
42 He said, |If you had only known today what would bring you peace! But now it is hidden, so you cannot see it. saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes.
43 The time will come when enemy armies will build a wall to surround you and close you in on every side. For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.
44 They will level you to the ground and kill your people. One stone will not be left on top of another, because you didn't recognize the time when God came to help you.| and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.” They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.”
45 Jesus went into the temple courtyard and began to throw out those who were selling things there. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold, When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began to drive out those who were selling.
46 He said to them, |Scripture says, 'My house will be a house of prayer,' but you have turned it into a gathering place for thieves.| saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers.” “It is written,” he said to them, “’My house will be a house of prayer’; but you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’”
47 Jesus taught in the temple courtyard every day. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people looked for a way to kill him. And he was teaching daily in the temple. The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people were seeking to destroy him, Every day he was teaching at the temple. But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him.
48 But they could not find a way to do it, because all the people were eager to hear him. but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were hanging on his words. Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.
