1 As He passed by, He saw a man who had been blind from his birth. As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth.
2 So His disciples asked Him, "Rabbi, who sinned--this man or his parents--that he was born blind?" And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
3 "Neither he nor his parents sinned," answered Jesus, "but he was born blind in order that God's mercy might be openly shown in him. Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.
4 We must do the works of Him who sent me while there is daylight. Night is coming on, when no one can work. We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.
5 When I am in the world, I am the Light of the world." As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
6 After thus speaking, He spat on the ground, and then, kneading the dust and spittle into clay, He smeared the clay over the man's eyes and said to him, Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man’s eyes with the mud After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes.
7 "Go and wash in the pool of Siloam" --the name means 'Sent.' So he went and washed his eyes, and returned able to see. and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing. “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.
8 His neighbours, therefore, and the other people to whom he had been a familiar object because he was a beggar, began asking, "Is not this the man who used to sit and beg?" The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar were saying, “Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?”
9 "Yes it is," replied some of them. "No it is not," said others, "but he is like him." His own statement was, "I am the man." Some said, “It is he.” Others said, “No, but he is like him.” He kept saying, “I am the man.” Some claimed that he was. Others said, “No, he only looks like him.” But he himself insisted, “I am the man.”
10 "How then were your eyes opened?" they asked. So they said to him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” “How then were your eyes opened?” they asked.
11 "He whose name is Jesus," he answered, "made clay and smeared my eyes with it, and then told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed and obtained sight." He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed and received my sight.” He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.”
12 "Where is he?" they inquired, but the man did not know. They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.” “Where is this man?” they asked him. “I don’t know,” he said.
13 They brought him to the Pharisees--the man who had been blind. They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.
14 Now the day on which Jesus made the clay and opened the man's eyes was the Sabbath. Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath.
15 So the Pharisees renewed their questioning as to how he had obtained his sight. "He put clay on my eyes," he replied, "and I washed, and now I can see." So the Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. “He put mud on my eyes,” the man replied, “and I washed, and now I see.”
16 This led some of the Pharisees to say, "That man has not come from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath." "How is it possible for a bad man to do such miracles?" argued others. Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And there was a division among them. Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others asked, “How can a sinner perform such signs?” So they were divided.
17 And there was a division among them. So again they asked the once blind man, "What is your account of him? --for he opened your eyes." "He is a Prophet," he replied. So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.” Then they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.” The man replied, “He is a prophet.”
18 The Jews, however, did not believe the statement concerning him--that he had been blind and had obtained his sight--until they called his parents and asked them, The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight They still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents.
19 "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How is it then that he can now see?" and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” “Is this your son?” they asked. “Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?”
20 "We know," replied the parents, "that this is our son and that he was born blind; His parents answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. “We know he is our son,” the parents answered, “and we know he was born blind.
21 but how it is that he can now see or who has opened his eyes we do not know. Ask him himself; he is of full age; he himself will give his own account of it." But how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.”
22 Such was their answer, because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already settled among themselves that if any one should acknowledge Jesus as the Christ, he should be excluded from the synagogue. (His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess Jesus to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.) His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue.
23 That was why his parents said, "He is of full age: ask him himself." Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.” That was why his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”
24 A second time therefore they called the man who had been blind, and said, "Give God the praise: we know that that man is a sinner." So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.” A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. “Give glory to God by telling the truth,” they said. “We know this man is a sinner.”
25 "Whether he is a sinner or not, I do not know," he replied; "one thing I know--that I was once blind and that now I can see." He answered, “Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”
26 "What did he do to you?" they asked; "how did he open your eyes?" They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”
27 "I have told you already," he replied, "and you did not listen to me. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also mean to be disciples of his?" He answered them, “I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” He answered, “I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples too?”
28 Then they railed at him, and said, "You are that man's disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. And they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses!
29 We know that God spoke to Moses; but as for this fellow we do not know where he comes from." We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.” We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.”
30 "Why, this is marvellous!" the man replied; "you do not know where he comes from, and yet he has opened my eyes! The man answered, “Why, this is an amazing thing! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. The man answered, “Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes.
31 We know that God does not listen to bad people, but that if any one is a God-fearing man and obeys Him, to him He listens. We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him. We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will.
32 From the beginning of the world such a thing was never heard of as that any one should open the eyes of a man blind from his birth. Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind.
33 Had that man not come from God, he could have done nothing." If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.”
34 "You," they replied, "were wholly begotten and born in sin, and do *you* teach *us*?" And they put him out of the synagogue. They answered him, “You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?” And they cast him out. To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out.
35 Jesus heard that they had done this. So having found him, He asked him, "Do you believe in the Son of God?" Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”
36 "Who is He, Sir?" replied the man. "Tell me, so that I may believe in Him." He answered, “And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”
37 "You have seen Him," said Jesus; "and not only so: He is now speaking to you." Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and it is he who is speaking to you.” Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”
38 "I believe, Sir," he said. And he threw himself at His feet. He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.
39 "I came into this world," said Jesus, "to judge men, that those who do not see may see, and that those who do see may become blind." Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.” Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.”
40 These words were heard by those of the Pharisees who were present, and they asked Him, "Are *we* also blind?" Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things, and said to him, “Are we also blind?” Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?”
41 "If you were blind," answered Jesus, "you would have no sin; but as a matter of fact you boast that you see. So your sin remains!" Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no guilt; but now that you say, ‘We see,’ your guilt remains. Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.
