1 As he was passing by, he saw a man blind from birth. As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth.
2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind? ” And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
3 “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” Jesus answered. “This came about so that God’s works might be displayed in him. Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.
4 We must do the works of him who sent me while it is day. Night is coming when no one can work. We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.
5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
6 After he said these things he spit on the ground, made some mud from the saliva, and spread the mud on his eyes. Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. 8 His neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar said, “Isn’t this the one who used to sit begging? ” The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar were saying, “Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?”
9 Some said, “He’s the one.” Others were saying, “No, but he looks like him.” He kept saying, “I’m the one.” Some said, “It is he.” Others said, “No, but he is like him.” He kept saying, “I am the man.” Some claimed that he was. Others said, “No, he only looks like him.” But he himself insisted, “I am the man.”
10 So they asked him, “Then how were your eyes opened? ” So they said to him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” “How then were your eyes opened?” they asked.
11 He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and told me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So when I went and washed I received my sight.” He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed and received my sight.” He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.”
12 “Where is he? ” they asked. “I don’t know,” he said. They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.” “Where is this man?” they asked him. “I don’t know,” he said.
13 They brought the man who used to be blind to the Pharisees. They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.
14 The day that Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes was a Sabbath. Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath.
15 Then the Pharisees asked him again how he received his sight. “He put mud on my eyes,” he told them. “I washed and I can see.” So the Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. “He put mud on my eyes,” the man replied, “and I washed, and now I see.”
16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, because he doesn’t keep the Sabbath.” But others were saying, “How can a sinful man perform such signs? ” And there was a division among them. Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And there was a division among them. Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others asked, “How can a sinner perform such signs?” So they were divided.
17 Again they asked the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he opened your eyes? ” “He’s a prophet,” he said. So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.” Then they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.” The man replied, “He is a prophet.”
18 The Jews did not believe this about him—that he was blind and received sight—until they summoned the parents of the one who had received his sight. The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight They still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents.
19 They asked them, “Is this your son, the one you say was born blind? How then does he now see? ” and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” “Is this your son?” they asked. “Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?”
20 “We know this is our son and that he was born blind,” his parents answered. His parents answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. “We know he is our son,” the parents answered, “and we know he was born blind.
21 “But we don’t know how he now sees, and we don’t know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he’s of age. He will speak for himself.” But how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.”
22 His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews, since the Jews had already agreed that if anyone confessed him as the Messiah, he would be banned from the synagogue. (His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess Jesus to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.) His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue.
23 This is why his parents said, “He’s of age; ask him.” Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.” That was why his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”
24 So a second time they summoned the man who had been blind and told him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.” So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.” A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. “Give glory to God by telling the truth,” they said. “We know this man is a sinner.”
25 He answered, “Whether or not he’s a sinner, I don’t know. One thing I do know: I was blind, and now I can see! ” He answered, “Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”
26 Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes? ” They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”
27 “I already told you,” he said, “and you didn’t listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You don’t want to become his disciples too, do you? ” He answered them, “I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” He answered, “I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples too?”
28 They ridiculed him: “You’re that man’s disciple, but we’re Moses’s disciples. And they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses!
29 We know that God has spoken to Moses. But this man—we don’t know where he’s from.” We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.” We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.”
30 “This is an amazing thing! ” the man told them. “You don’t know where he is from, and yet he opened my eyes. The man answered, “Why, this is an amazing thing! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. The man answered, “Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes.
31 We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but if anyone is God-fearing and does his will, he listens to him. We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him. We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will.
32 Throughout history no one has ever heard of someone opening the eyes of a person born blind. Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind.
33 If this man were not from God, he wouldn’t be able to do anything.” If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.”
34 “You were born entirely in sin,” they replied, “and are you trying to teach us? ” Then they threw him out. They answered him, “You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?” And they cast him out. To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out.
35 Jesus heard that they had thrown the man out, and when he found him, he asked, “Do you believe in the Son of Man? ” Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”
36 “Who is he, Sir, that I may believe in him? ” he asked. He answered, “And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”
37 Jesus answered, “You have seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.” Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and it is he who is speaking to you.” Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”
38 “I believe, Lord! ” he said, and he worshiped him. He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.
39 Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment, in order that those who do not see will see and those who do see will become blind.” Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.” Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.”
40 Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things and asked him, “We aren’t blind too, are we? ” Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things, and said to him, “Are we also blind?” Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?”
41 “If you were blind,” Jesus told them, “you wouldn’t have sin. But now that you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains. Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no guilt; but now that you say, ‘We see,’ your guilt remains. Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.
