1 And Jesus, while passing by, saw a man blind from birth. As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth.
2 And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?” And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
3 Jesus responded: “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but it was so that the works of God would be made manifest in him. Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.
4 I must work the works of him who sent me, while it is day: the night is coming, when no one is able to work. We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.
5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
6 When he had said these things, he spat on the ground, and he made clay from the spittle, and he smeared the clay over his eyes. Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man’s eyes with the mud After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes.
7 And he said to him: “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated as: one who has been sent). Therefore, he went away and washed, and he returned, seeing. and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing. “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.
8 And so the bystanders and those who had seen him before, when he was a beggar, said, “Is this not the one who was sitting and begging?” Some said, “This is he.” The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar were saying, “Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?”
9 But others said, “Certainly not, but he is similar to him.” Yet truly, he himself said, “I am he.” Some said, “It is he.” Others said, “No, but he is like him.” He kept saying, “I am the man.” Some claimed that he was. Others said, “No, he only looks like him.” But he himself insisted, “I am the man.”
10 Therefore, they said to him, “How were your eyes opened?” So they said to him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” “How then were your eyes opened?” they asked.
11 He responded: “That man who is called Jesus made clay, and he anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to the pool of Siloam and wash.’ And I went, and I washed, and I see.” He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed and received my sight.” He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.”
12 And they said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.” They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.” “Where is this man?” they asked him. “I don’t know,” he said.
13 They brought the one who had been blind to the Pharisees. They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.
14 Now it was the Sabbath, when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath.
15 Therefore, again the Pharisees questioned him as to how he had seen. And he said to them, “He placed clay over my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” So the Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. “He put mud on my eyes,” the man replied, “and I washed, and now I see.”
16 And so certain Pharisees said: “This man, who does not keep the Sabbath, is not from God.” But others said, “How could a sinful man accomplish these signs?” And there was a schism among them. Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And there was a division among them. Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others asked, “How can a sinner perform such signs?” So they were divided.
17 Therefore, they spoke again to the blind man, “What do you say about him who opened your eyes?” Then he said, “He is a Prophet.” So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.” Then they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.” The man replied, “He is a prophet.”
18 Therefore, the Jews did not believe, about him, that he had been blind and had seen, until they called the parents of him who had seen. The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight They still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents.
19 And they questioned them, saying: “Is this your son, whom you say was born blind? Then how is it that he now sees?” and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” “Is this your son?” they asked. “Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?”
20 His parents responded to them and said: “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. His parents answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. “We know he is our son,” the parents answered, “and we know he was born blind.
21 But how it is that he now sees, we do not know. And who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him. He is old enough. Let him speak for himself.” But how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.”
22 His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews. For the Jews had already conspired, so that if anyone were to confess him to be the Christ, he would be expelled from the synagogue. (His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess Jesus to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.) His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue.
23 It was for this reason that his parents said: “He is old enough. Ask him.” Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.” That was why his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”
24 Therefore, they again called the man who had been blind, and they said to him: “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.” So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.” A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. “Give glory to God by telling the truth,” they said. “We know this man is a sinner.”
25 And so he said to them: “If he is a sinner, I do not know it. One thing I do know, that although I was blind, now I see.” He answered, “Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”
26 Then they said to him: “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”
27 He answered them: “I have already told you, and you heard it. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” He answered them, “I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” He answered, “I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples too?”
28 Therefore, they cursed him and said: “You be his disciple. But we are disciples of Moses. And they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses!
29 We know that God spoke to Moses. But this man, we do not know where he is from.” We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.” We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.”
30 The man responded and said to them: “Now in this is a wonder: that you do not know where he is from, and yet he has opened my eyes. The man answered, “Why, this is an amazing thing! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. The man answered, “Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes.
31 And we know that God does not hear sinners. But if anyone is a worshipper of God and does his will, then he heeds him. We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him. We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will.
32 From ancient times, it has not been heard that anyone has opened the eyes of someone born blind. Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind.
33 Unless this man were of God, he would not be able to do any such thing.” If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.”
34 They responded and said to him, “You were born entirely in sins, and you would teach us?” And they cast him out. They answered him, “You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?” And they cast him out. To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out.
35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out. And when he had found him, he said to him, “Do you believe in the Son of God?” Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”
36 He responded and said, “Who is he, Lord, so that I may believe in him?” He answered, “And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”
37 And Jesus said to him, “You have both seen him, and he is the one who is speaking with you.” Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and it is he who is speaking to you.” Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”
38 And he said, “I believe, Lord.” And falling prostrate, he worshipped him. He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.
39 And Jesus said, “I came into this world in judgment, so that those who do not see, may see; and so that those who see, may become blind.” Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.” Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.”
40 And certain Pharisees, who were with him, heard this, and they said to him, “Are we also blind?” Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things, and said to him, “Are we also blind?” Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?”
41 Jesus said to them: “If you were blind, you would not have sin. Yet now you say, ‘We see.’ So your sin persists.” Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no guilt; but now that you say, ‘We see,’ your guilt remains. Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.
