| 4 | and if it is reported and you hear about it, you must investigate it thoroughly. If the report is TRUE and such an abomination has happened in Israel, | and it is told you and you hear of it, then you shall inquire diligently, and if it is true and certain that such an abomination has been done in Israel, | And it be told thee, and thou hast heard of it, and inquired diligently, and, behold, it be true, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought in Israel: | and if it is reported to you and you have heard about it, then you shall investigate thoroughly. And if it is true and the report is trustworthy that this detestable thing has been done in Israel, | and this has been brought to your attention, then you must investigate it thoroughly. Do not turn aside from what they tell you, to the right or to the left. |

You must purge the evil from Israel. | The man who acts presumptuously by not obeying the priest who stands to minister there before the LORD your God, or the judge, that man shall die. So you shall purge the evil from Israel. | And the man that will do presumptuously, and will not hearken unto the priest that standeth to minister there before the LORD thy God, or unto the judge, even that man shall die: and thou shalt put away the evil from Israel. | But the person who acts insolently by not listening to the priest who stands there to serve the LORD your God, nor to the judge, that person shall die; so you shall eliminate the evil from Israel. | Anyone who shows contempt for the judge or for the priest who stands ministering there to the LORD your God is to be put to death. | 13 | Then all the people will hear and be afraid, and will no longer behave arrogantly. | And all the people shall hear and fear and not act presumptuously again. | And all the people shall hear, and fear, and do no more presumptuously. | Then all the people will hear and be afraid, and will not act insolently again. | All the people will hear and be afraid, and will not be contemptuous again. |
| 14 | When you enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you and have taken possession of it and settled in it, and you say, “Let us set a king over us like all the nations around us,” | “When you come to the land that the LORD your God is giving you, and you possess it and dwell in it and then say, ‘I will set a king over me, like all the nations that are around me,’ | When thou art come unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein, and shalt say, I will set a king over me, like as all the nations that are about me; | “When you enter the land which the LORD your God is giving you, and you take possession of it and live in it, and you say, ‘I will appoint a king over me like all the nations who are around me,’ | When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you and have taken possession of it and settled in it, and you say, “Let us set a king over us like all the nations around us,” |

Appoint a king from among your brothers; you are not to set over yourselves a foreigner who is not one of your brothers. | you may indeed set a king over you whom the LORD your God will choose. One from among your brothers you shall set as king over you. You may not put a foreigner over you, who is not your brother. | Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the LORD thy God shall choose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee: thou mayest not set a stranger over thee, which is not thy brother. | you shall in fact appoint a king over you whom the LORD your God chooses. One from among your countrymen you shall appoint as king over yourselves; you may not put a foreigner over yourselves, anyone who is not your countryman. | be sure to appoint over you a king the LORD your God chooses. | 17 | He must not take many wives for himself, lest his heart go astray. He must not accumulate for himself large amounts of silver and gold. | And he shall not acquire many wives for himself, lest his heart turn away, nor shall he acquire for himself excessive silver and gold. | Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold. | And he shall not acquire many wives for himself, so that his heart does not turn away; nor shall he greatly increase silver and gold for himself. | He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold. |
| 18 | When he is seated on his royal throne, he must write for himself a copy of this instruction on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests. | “And when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself in a book a copy of this law, approved by the Levitical priests. | And it shall be, when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests the Levites: | “Now it shall come about, when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write for himself a copy of this Law on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests. | When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the Levitical priests. |
| 19 | It is to remain with him, and he is to read from it all the days of his life, so that he may learn to fear the LORD his God by carefully observing all the words of this instruction and these statutes. | And it shall be with him, and he shall read in it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the LORD his God by keeping all the words of this law and these statutes, and doing them, | And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them: | And it shall be with him, and he shall read it all the days of his life, so that he will learn to fear the LORD his God, by carefully following all the words of this Law and these statutes, | It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the LORD his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees |

Then he and his descendants will reign a long time over his kingdom in Israel. |
