| 1 | And King David [is] old, entering into days, and they cover him with garments, and he has no heat, | Now King David was old and advanced in years. And although they covered him with clothes, he could not get warm. | When King David was very old, he could not keep warm even when they put covers over him. | |

And behold, they are eating and drinking before him, and saying, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’ | Today he has gone down and sacrificed great numbers of cattle, fattened calves, and sheep. | 34 | and Zadok the priest has anointed him there—and Nathan the prophet—for king over Israel, and you have blown with a horn and said, Let King Solomon live; | And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet there anoint him king over Israel. Then blow the trumpet and say, ‘Long live King Solomon!’ | There have Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him king over Israel. Blow the trumpet and shout, ‘Long live King Solomon!’ | |

| 38 | And Zadok the priest goes down, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethite, and the Pelethite, and they cause Solomon to ride on the mule of King David, and cause him to go to Gihon, | So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon ride on King David’s mule and brought him to Gihon. | So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Kerethites and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon mount King David’s mule, and they escorted him to Gihon. | |

And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, “What does this uproar in the city mean?” | Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they were finishing their feast. On hearing the sound of the trumpet, Joab asked, “What’s the meaning of all the noise in the city?” | |
| 42 | He is yet speaking, and behold, Jonathan son of Abiathar the priest has come in, and Adonijah says, “Come in, for you [are] a man of valor, and you bear good tidings.” | While he was still speaking, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came. And Adonijah said, “Come in, for you are a worthy man and bring good news.” | Even as he was speaking, Jonathan son of Abiathar the priest arrived. Adonijah said, “Come in. A worthy man like you must be bringing good news.” | |
| 43 | And Jonathan answers and says to Adonijah, “Truly our lord King David has caused Solomon to reign, | Jonathan answered Adonijah, “No, for our lord King David has made Solomon king, | “Not at all!” Jonathan answered. “Our lord King David has made Solomon king. | |
| 44 | and the king sends with him Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethite, and the Pelethite, and they cause him to ride on the king’s mule, | and the king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites. And they had him ride on the king’s mule. | The king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Kerethites and the Pelethites, and they have put him on the king’s mule, | |
| 45 | and they anoint him—Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet—for king in Gihon, and have come up there rejoicing, and the city is moved; it [is] the noise that you have heard. | And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king at Gihon, and they have gone up from there rejoicing, so that the city is in an uproar. This is the noise that you have heard. | and Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king at Gihon. From there they have gone up cheering, and the city resounds with it. | 47 | and also the servants of the king have come into bless our lord King David, saying, Your God makes the name of Solomon better than your name, and his throne greater than your throne; and the king bows himself on the bed, | Moreover, the king’s servants came to congratulate our lord King David, saying, ‘May your God make the name of Solomon more famous than yours, and make his throne greater than your throne.’ And the king bowed himself on the bed. | Also, the royal officials have come to congratulate our lord King David, saying, ‘May your God make Solomon’s name more famous than yours and his throne greater than yours!’ And the king bowed in worship on his bed | |
| 48 | and also thus the king has said, Blessed [is] YHWH, God of Israel, who has given [one] sitting on my throne today, and my eyes are seeing.” | And the king also said, ‘Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who has granted someone to sit on my throne this day, my own eyes seeing it.’” | and said, ‘Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel, who has allowed my eyes to see a successor on my throne today.’” | |
| 49 | And they tremble, and rise—all those called who [are] for Adonijah—and go, each on his way; | Then all the guests of Adonijah trembled and rose, and each went his own way. | At this, all Adonijah’s guests rose in alarm and dispersed. | |
| 50 | and Adonijah fears because of Solomon, and rises, and goes, and lays hold on the horns of the altar. | And Adonijah feared Solomon. So he arose and went and took hold of the horns of the altar. | But Adonijah, in fear of Solomon, went and took hold of the horns of the altar. | |
| 51 | And it is declared to Solomon, saying, “Behold, Adonijah fears King Solomon, and behold, he has laid hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let King Solomon swear to me as today—he does not put his servant to death by the sword.” | Then it was told Solomon, “Behold, Adonijah fears King Solomon, for behold, he has laid hold of the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let King Solomon swear to me first that he will not put his servant to death with the sword.’” | Then Solomon was told, “Adonijah is afraid of King Solomon and is clinging to the horns of the altar.
