| 2I sink in deep mire, Where there is no standing; I have come into deep waters, Where the floods overflow me. | 2I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold. I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf me. |
| 3I am weary with my crying; My throat is dry; My eyes fail while I wait for my God. | 3I am worn out calling for help; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God. |
| 4Those who hate me without a cause Are more than the hairs of my head; They are mighty who would destroy me, Being my enemies wrongfully; Though I have stolen nothing, I still must restore it. | 4Those who hate me without reason outnumber the hairs of my head; many are my enemies without cause, those who seek to destroy me. I am forced to restore what I did not steal. |
| 5O God, You know my foolishness; And my sins are not hidden from You. | 5You, God, know my folly; my guilt is not hidden from you. |
| 6Let not those who wait for You, O Lord GOD of hosts, be ashamed because of me; Let not those who seek You be confounded because of me, O God of Israel. | 6Lord, the LORD Almighty, may those who hope in you not be disgraced because of me; God of Israel, may those who seek you not be put to shame because of me. |
| 7Because for Your sake I have borne reproach; Shame has covered my face. | 7For I endure scorn for your sake, and shame covers my face. |
| 8I have become a stranger to my brothers, And an alien to my mother’s children; | 8I am a foreigner to my own family, a stranger to my own mother's children; |
| 9Because zeal for Your house has eaten me up, And the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me. | 9for zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you fall on me. |
| 10When I wept and chastened my soul with fasting, That became my reproach. | 10When I weep and fast, I must endure scorn; |
| 11I also made sackcloth my garment; I became a byword to them. | 11when I put on sackcloth, people make sport of me. |
| 12Those who sit in the gate speak against me, And I am the song of the drunkards. | 12Those who sit at the gate mock me, and I am the song of the drunkards. |
| 13But as for me, my prayer is to You, O LORD, in the acceptable time; O God, in the multitude of Your mercy, Hear me in the truth of Your salvation. | 13But I pray to you, LORD, in the time of your favor; in your great love, O God, answer me with your sure salvation. |
| 14Deliver me out of the mire, And let me not sink; Let me be delivered from those who hate me, And out of the deep waters. | 14Rescue me from the mire, do not let me sink; deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep waters. |
| 15Let not the floodwater overflow me, Nor let the deep swallow me up; And let not the pit shut its mouth on me. | 15Do not let the floodwaters engulf me or the depths swallow me up or the pit close its mouth over me. |
| 16Hear me, O LORD, for Your lovingkindness is good; Turn to me according to the multitude of Your tender mercies. | 16Answer me, LORD, out of the goodness of your love; in your great mercy turn to me. |
| 17And do not hide Your face from Your servant, For I am in trouble; Hear me speedily. | 17Do not hide your face from your servant; answer me quickly, for I am in trouble. |
| 18Draw near to my soul, and redeem it; Deliver me because of my enemies. | 18Come near and rescue me; deliver me because of my foes. |
| 19You know my reproach, my shame, and my dishonor; My adversaries are all before You. | 19You know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed; all my enemies are before you. |
| 20Reproach has broken my heart, And I am full of heaviness; I looked for someone to take pity, but there was none; And for comforters, but I found none. | 20Scorn has broken my heart and has left me helpless; I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found none. |
| 21They also gave me gall for my food, And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. | 21They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst. |
| 22Let their table become a snare before them, And their well-being a trap. | 22May the table set before them become a snare; may it become retribution and a trap. |
| 23Let their eyes be darkened, so that they do not see; And make their loins shake continually. | 23May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever. |
| 24Pour out Your indignation upon them, And let Your wrathful anger take hold of them. | 24Pour out your wrath on them; let your fierce anger overtake them. |
| 25Let their dwelling place be desolate; Let no one live in their tents. | 25May their place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in their tents. |
| 26For they persecute the ones You have struck, And talk of the grief of those You have wounded. | 26For they persecute those you wound and talk about the pain of those you hurt. |
| 27Add iniquity to their iniquity, And let them not come into Your righteousness. | 27Charge them with crime upon crime; do not let them share in your salvation. |
| 28Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, And not be written with the righteous. | 28May they be blotted out of the book of life and not be listed with the righteous. |
| 29But I am poor and sorrowful; Let Your salvation, O God, set me up on high. | 29But as for me, afflicted and in pain-- may your salvation, God, protect me. |
| 30I will praise the name of God with a song, And will magnify Him with thanksgiving. | 30I will praise God's name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving. |
| 31This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or bull, Which has horns and hooves. | 31This will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with its horns and hooves. |
| 32The humble shall see this and be glad; And you who seek God, your hearts shall live. | 32The poor will see and be glad-- you who seek God, may your hearts live! |
| 33For the LORD hears the poor, And does not despise His prisoners. | 33The LORD hears the needy and does not despise his captive people. |
| 34Let heaven and earth praise Him, The seas and everything that moves in them. | 34Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and all that move in them, |
| 35For God will save Zion And build the cities of Judah, That they may dwell there and possess it. | 35for God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah. Then people will settle there and possess it; |
| 36Also, the descendants of His servants shall inherit it, And those who love His name shall dwell in it. | 36the children of his servants will inherit it, and those who love his name will dwell there. |
