To the Chief Musician. Set to “The Lilies.” A Psalm of David. Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck.1Save me, God, for the water has risen to my neck.
I sink in deep mire, Where there is no standing; I have come into deep waters, Where the floods overflow me.2I have sunk in deep mud, and there is no footing; I have come into deep water, and a flood sweeps over me.
I am weary with my crying; My throat is dry; My eyes fail while I wait for my God.3I am weary from my crying; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God.
Those who hate me without a cause Are more than the hairs of my head; They are mighty who would destroy me, Being my enemies wrongfully; Though I have stolen nothing, I still must restore it.4Those who hate me without cause are more numerous than the hairs of my head; my deceitful enemies, who would destroy me, are powerful. Though I did not steal, I must repay.
O God, You know my foolishness; And my sins are not hidden from You.5God, you know my foolishness, and my guilty acts are not hidden from you.
Let not those who wait for You, O Lord GOD of hosts, be ashamed because of me; Let not those who seek You be confounded because of me, O God of Israel.6Do not let those who put their hope in you be disgraced because of me, Lord GOD of Armies; do not let those who seek you be humiliated because of me, God of Israel.
Because for Your sake I have borne reproach; Shame has covered my face.7For I have endured insults because of you, and shame has covered my face.
I have become a stranger to my brothers, And an alien to my mother’s children;8I have become a stranger to my brothers and a foreigner to my mother's sons
Because zeal for Your house has eaten me up, And the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.9because zeal for your house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.
When I wept and chastened my soul with fasting, That became my reproach.10I mourned and fasted, but it brought me insults.
I also made sackcloth my garment; I became a byword to them.11I wore sackcloth as my clothing, and I was a joke to them.
Those who sit in the gate speak against me, And I am the song of the drunkards.12Those who sit at the city gate talk about me, and drunkards make up songs about me.
But as for me, my prayer is to You, O LORD, in the acceptable time; O God, in the multitude of Your mercy, Hear me in the truth of Your salvation.13But as for me, LORD, my prayer to you is for a time of favor. In your abundant, faithful love, God, answer me with your sure salvation.
Deliver me out of the mire, And let me not sink; Let me be delivered from those who hate me, And out of the deep waters.14Rescue me from the miry mud; don't let me sink. Let me be rescued from those who hate me and from the deep water.
Let not the floodwater overflow me, Nor let the deep swallow me up; And let not the pit shut its mouth on me.15Don't let the floodwaters sweep over me or the deep swallow me up; don't let the Pit close its mouth over me.
Hear me, O LORD, for Your lovingkindness is good; Turn to me according to the multitude of Your tender mercies.16Answer me, LORD, for your faithful love is good. In keeping with your abundant compassion, turn to me.
And do not hide Your face from Your servant, For I am in trouble; Hear me speedily.17Don't hide your face from your servant, for I am in distress. Answer me quickly!
Draw near to my soul, and redeem it; Deliver me because of my enemies.18Come near to me and redeem me; ransom me because of my enemies.
You know my reproach, my shame, and my dishonor; My adversaries are all before You.19You know the insults I endure--my shame and disgrace. You are aware of all my adversaries.
Reproach has broken my heart, And I am full of heaviness; I looked for someone to take pity, but there was none; And for comforters, but I found none.20Insults have broken my heart, and I am in despair. I waited for sympathy, but there was none; for comforters, but found no one.
They also gave me gall for my food, And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.21Instead, they gave me gall for my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
Let their table become a snare before them, And their well-being a trap.22Let their table set before them be a snare, and let it be a trap for their allies.
Let their eyes be darkened, so that they do not see; And make their loins shake continually.23Let their eyes grow too dim to see, and let their hips continually quake.
Pour out Your indignation upon them, And let Your wrathful anger take hold of them.24Pour out your rage on them, and let your burning anger overtake them.
Let their dwelling place be desolate; Let no one live in their tents.25Make their fortification desolate; may no one live in their tents.
For they persecute the ones You have struck, And talk of the grief of those You have wounded.26For they persecute the one you struck and talk about the pain of those you wounded.
Add iniquity to their iniquity, And let them not come into Your righteousness.27Charge them with crime on top of crime; do not let them share in your righteousness.
Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, And not be written with the righteous.28Let them be erased from the book of life and not be recorded with the righteous.
But I am poor and sorrowful; Let Your salvation, O God, set me up on high.29But as for me--poor and in pain--let your salvation protect me, God.
I will praise the name of God with a song, And will magnify Him with thanksgiving.30I will praise God's name with song and exalt him with thanksgiving.
This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or bull, Which has horns and hooves.31That will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with horns and hooves.
The humble shall see this and be glad; And you who seek God, your hearts shall live.32The humble will see it and rejoice. You who seek God, take heart!
For the LORD hears the poor, And does not despise His prisoners.33For the LORD listens to the needy and does not despise his own who are prisoners.
Let heaven and earth praise Him, The seas and everything that moves in them.34Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and everything that moves in them,
For God will save Zion And build the cities of Judah, That they may dwell there and possess it.35for God will save Zion and build up the cities of Judah. They will live there and possess it.
Also, the descendants of His servants shall inherit it, And those who love His name shall dwell in it.36The descendants of his servants will inherit it, and those who love his name will live in it.
