Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that "We all possess knowledge." But knowledge puffs up while love builds up.1Περὶ δὲ τῶν εἰδωλοθύτων οἴδαμεν ὅτι πάντες γνῶσιν ἔχομεν γνῶσις φυσιοῖ δὲ ἀγάπη οἰκοδομεῖ
Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know.2εἴ τις δοκεῖ ἐγνωκέναι τι οὔπω ἔγνω καθὼς δεῖ γνῶναι
But whoever loves God is known by God.3εἰ δέ τις ἀγαπᾷ τὸν Θεόν οὗτος ἔγνωσται ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ
So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that "An idol is nothing at all in the world" and that "There is no God but one."4Περὶ τῆς βρώσεως οὖν τῶν εἰδωλοθύτων οἴδαμεν ὅτι οὐδὲν εἴδωλον ἐν κόσμῳ καὶ ὅτι οὐδεὶς Θεὸς εἰ μὴ εἷς
For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many "gods" and many "lords"),5καὶ γὰρ εἴπερ εἰσὶν λεγόμενοι θεοὶ εἴτε ἐν οὐρανῷ εἴτε ἐπὶ γῆς ὥσπερ εἰσὶν θεοὶ πολλοὶ καὶ κύριοι πολλοί
yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.6ἀλλ’ ἡμῖν εἷς Θεὸς Πατήρ ἐξ οὗ τὰ πάντα καὶ ἡμεῖς εἰς αὐτόν καὶ εἷς Κύριος Ἰησοῦς Χριστός δι’ οὗ τὰ πάντα καὶ ἡμεῖς δι’ αὐτοῦ
But not everyone possesses this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled.7Ἀλλ’ οὐκ ἐν πᾶσιν γνῶσις τινὲς δὲ τῇ συνηθείᾳ ἕως ἄρτι τοῦ εἰδώλου ὡς εἰδωλόθυτον ἐσθίουσιν καὶ συνείδησις αὐτῶν ἀσθενὴς οὖσα μολύνεται
But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.8βρῶμα δὲ ἡμᾶς οὐ παραστήσει τῷ Θεῷ οὔτε ἐὰν μὴ φάγωμεν ὑστερούμεθα οὔτε ἐὰν ‹μὴ› φάγωμεν περισσεύομεν
Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak.9Βλέπετε δὲ μή πως ἐξουσία ὑμῶν αὕτη πρόσκομμα γένηται τοῖς ἀσθενέσιν
For if someone with a weak conscience sees you, with all your knowledge, eating in an idol's temple, won't that person be emboldened to eat what is sacrificed to idols?10ἐὰν γάρ τις ἴδῃ σὲ τὸν ἔχοντα γνῶσιν ἐν εἰδωλείῳ κατακείμενον οὐχὶ συνείδησις αὐτοῦ ἀσθενοῦς ὄντος οἰκοδομηθήσεται εἰς τὸ τὰ εἰδωλόθυτα ἐσθίειν
So this weak brother or sister, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge.11ἀπόλλυται γὰρ ἀσθενῶν ἐν τῇ σῇ γνώσει ἀδελφὸς δι’ ὃν Χριστὸς ἀπέθανεν
When you sin against them in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ.12οὕτως δὲ ἁμαρτάνοντες εἰς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς καὶ τύπτοντες αὐτῶν τὴν συνείδησιν ἀσθενοῦσαν εἰς Χριστὸν ἁμαρτάνετε
Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause them to fall.13Διόπερ εἰ βρῶμα σκανδαλίζει τὸν ἀδελφόν μου οὐ μὴ φάγω κρέα εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ἵνα μὴ τὸν ἀδελφόν μου σκανδαλίσω
