The LORD spoke again to Moses and to Aaron, saying to them,1The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron:
"Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, 'These are the creatures which you may eat from all the animals that are on the earth.2"Tell the Israelites: You may eat all these kinds of land animals.
Whatever divides a hoof, thus making split hoofs, and chews the cud, among the animals, that you may eat.3You may eat any animal with divided hooves and that chews the cud.
'Nevertheless, you are not to eat of these, among those which chew the cud, or among those which divide the hoof: the camel, for though it chews cud, it does not divide the hoof, it is unclean to you.4But among the ones that chew the cud or have divided hooves you are not to eat these: camels, though they chew the cud, do not have divided hooves--they are unclean for you;
'Likewise, the shaphan, for though it chews cud, it does not divide the hoof, it is unclean to you;5hyraxes, though they chew the cud, do not have hooves--they are unclean for you;
the rabbit also, for though it chews cud, it does not divide the hoof, it is unclean to you;6hares, though they chew the cud, do not have hooves--they are unclean for you;
and the pig, for though it divides the hoof, thus making a split hoof, it does not chew cud, it is unclean to you.7pigs, though they have divided hooves, do not chew the cud--they are unclean for you.
'You shall not eat of their flesh nor touch their carcasses; they are unclean to you.8Do not eat any of their meat or touch their carcasses--they are unclean for you.
'These you may eat, whatever is in the water: all that have fins and scales, those in the water, in the seas or in the rivers, you may eat.9"This is what you may eat from all that is in the water: You may eat everything in the water that has fins and scales, whether in the seas or streams.
'But whatever is in the seas and in the rivers that does not have fins and scales among all the teeming life of the water, and among all the living creatures that are in the water, they are detestable things to you,10But these are to be abhorrent to you: everything in the seas or streams that does not have fins and scales among all the swarming things and other living creatures in the water.
and they shall be abhorrent to you; you may not eat of their flesh, and their carcasses you shall detest.11They are to remain abhorrent to you; you must not eat any of their meat, and you must abhor their carcasses.
'Whatever in the water does not have fins and scales is abhorrent to you.12Everything in the water that does not have fins and scales will be abhorrent to you.
'These, moreover, you shall detest among the birds; they are abhorrent, not to be eaten: the eagle and the vulture and the buzzard,13"You are to abhor these birds. They must not be eaten because they are abhorrent: eagles, bearded vultures, Egyptian vultures,
and the kite and the falcon in its kind,14kites, any kind of falcon,
every raven in its kind,15every kind of raven,
and the ostrich and the owl and the sea gull and the hawk in its kind,16ostriches, short-eared owls, gulls, any kind of hawk,
and the little owl and the cormorant and the great owl,17little owls, cormorants, long-eared owls,
and the white owl and the pelican and the carrion vulture,18barn owls, eagle owls, ospreys,
and the stork, the heron in its kinds, and the hoopoe, and the bat.19storks, any kind of heron, hoopoes, and bats.
All the winged insects that walk on all fours are detestable to you.20"All winged insects that walk on all fours are to be abhorrent to you.
Yet these you may eat among all the winged insects which walk on all fours: those which have above their feet jointed legs with which to jump on the earth.21But you may eat these kinds of all the winged insects that walk on all fours: those that have jointed legs above their feet for hopping on the ground.
'These of them you may eat: the locust in its kinds, and the devastating locust in its kinds, and the cricket in its kinds, and the grasshopper in its kinds.22You may eat these: any kind of locust, katydid, cricket, and grasshopper.
'But all other winged insects which are four-footed are detestable to you.23All other winged insects that have four feet are to be abhorrent to you.
'By these, moreover, you will be made unclean: whoever touches their carcasses becomes unclean until evening,24"These will make you unclean. Whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening,
and whoever picks up any of their carcasses shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening.25and whoever carries any of their carcasses is to wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening.
Concerning all the animals which divide the hoof but do not make a split hoof, or which do not chew cud, they are unclean to you: whoever touches them becomes unclean.26All animals that have hooves but do not have a divided hoof and do not chew the cud are unclean for you. Whoever touches them becomes unclean.
Also whatever walks on its paws, among all the creatures that walk on all fours, are unclean to you; whoever touches their carcasses becomes unclean until evening,27All the four-footed animals that walk on their paws are unclean for you. Whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening,
and the one who picks up their carcasses shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening; they are unclean to you.28and anyone who carries their carcasses is to wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening. They are unclean for you.
'Now these are to you the unclean among the swarming things which swarm on the earth: the mole, and the mouse, and the great lizard in its kinds,29"These creatures that swarm on the ground are unclean for you: weasels, mice, any kind of large lizard,
and the gecko, and the crocodile, and the lizard, and the sand reptile, and the chameleon.30geckos, monitor lizards, common lizards, skinks, and chameleons.
'These are to you the unclean among all the swarming things; whoever touches them when they are dead becomes unclean until evening.31These are unclean for you among all the swarming creatures. Whoever touches them when they are dead will be unclean until evening.
'Also anything on which one of them may fall when they are dead becomes unclean, including any wooden article, or clothing, or a skin, or a sack-- any article of which use is made-- it shall be put in the water and be unclean until evening, then it becomes clean.32When any one of them dies and falls on anything it becomes unclean--any item of wood, clothing, leather, sackcloth, or any implement used for work. It is to be rinsed with water and will remain unclean until evening; then it will be clean.
'As for any earthenware vessel into which one of them may fall, whatever is in it becomes unclean and you shall break the vessel.33If any of them falls into any clay pot, everything in it will become unclean; you are to break it.
'Any of the food which may be eaten, on which water comes, shall become unclean, and any liquid which may be drunk in every vessel shall become unclean.34Any edible food coming into contact with that unclean water will become unclean, and any drinkable liquid in any container will become unclean.
'Everything, moreover, on which part of their carcass may fall becomes unclean; an oven or a stove shall be smashed; they are unclean and shall continue as unclean to you.35Anything one of their carcasses falls on will become unclean. If it is an oven or stove, it is to be smashed; it is unclean and will remain unclean for you.
'Nevertheless a spring or a cistern collecting water shall be clean, though the one who touches their carcass shall be unclean.36A spring or cistern containing water will remain clean, but someone who touches a carcass in it will become unclean.
'If a part of their carcass falls on any seed for sowing which is to be sown, it is clean.37If one of their carcasses falls on any seed that is to be sown, it is clean;
'Though if water is put on the seed and a part of their carcass falls on it, it is unclean to you.38but if water has been put on the seed and one of their carcasses falls on it, it is unclean for you.
'Also if one of the animals dies which you have for food, the one who touches its carcass becomes unclean until evening.39"If one of the animals that you use for food dies, anyone who touches its carcass will be unclean until evening.
'He too, who eats some of its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening, and the one who picks up its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening.40Anyone who eats some of its carcass is to wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening. Anyone who carries its carcass must wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening.
'Now every swarming thing that swarms on the earth is detestable, not to be eaten.41"All the creatures that swarm on the earth are abhorrent; they must not be eaten.
Whatever crawls on its belly, and whatever walks on all fours, whatever has many feet, in respect to every swarming thing that swarms on the earth, you shall not eat them, for they are detestable.42Do not eat any of the creatures that swarm on the earth, anything that moves on its belly or walks on all fours or on many feet, for they are abhorrent.
'Do not render yourselves detestable through any of the swarming things that swarm; and you shall not make yourselves unclean with them so that you become unclean.43Do not become contaminated by any creature that swarms; do not become unclean or defiled by them.
'For I am the LORD your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. And you shall not make yourselves unclean with any of the swarming things that swarm on the earth.44For I am the LORD your God, so you must consecrate yourselves and be holy because I am holy. Do not defile yourselves by any swarming creature that crawls on the ground.
'For I am the LORD who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God; thus you shall be holy, for I am holy.'"45For I am the LORD, who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God, so you must be holy because I am holy.
This is the law regarding the animal and the bird, and every living thing that moves in the waters and everything that swarms on the earth,46"This is the law concerning animals, birds, all living creatures that move in the water, and all creatures that swarm on the ground,
to make a distinction between the unclean and the clean, and between the edible creature and the creature which is not to be eaten.47in order to distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between the animals that may be eaten and those that may not be eaten."
