Maschil of Ethan the Ezrahite. I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations. | 1A well-written song by Ethan the Ezrachite. I will sing continually about the LORD's faithful deeds; to future generations I will proclaim your faithfulness. |
For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish in the very heavens. | 2For I say, "Loyal love is permanently established; in the skies you set up your faithfulness." |
I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant, | 3The LORD said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have made a promise on oath to David, my servant: |
Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah. | 4I will give you an eternal dynasty and establish your throne throughout future generations.'" (Selah) |
And the heavens shall praise thy wonders, O LORD: thy faithfulness also in the congregation of the saints. | 5O LORD, the heavens praise your amazing deeds, as well as your faithfulness in the angelic assembly. |
For who in the heaven can be compared unto the LORD? who among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the LORD? | 6For who in the skies can compare to the LORD? Who is like the LORD among the heavenly beings, |
God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him. | 7a God who is honored in the great angelic assembly, and more awesome than all who surround him? |
O LORD God of hosts, who is a strong LORD like unto thee? or to thy faithfulness round about thee? | 8O LORD, sovereign God! Who is strong like you, O LORD? Your faithfulness surrounds you. |
Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, thou stillest them. | 9You rule over the proud sea. When its waves surge, you calm them. |
Thou hast broken Rahab in pieces, as one that is slain; thou hast scattered thine enemies with thy strong arm. | 10You crushed the Proud One and killed it; with your strong arm you scattered your enemies. |
The heavens are thine, the earth also is thine: as for the world and the fulness thereof, thou hast founded them. | 11The heavens belong to you, as does the earth. You made the world and all it contains. |
The north and the south thou hast created them: Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name. | 12You created the north and the south. Tabor and Hermon rejoice in your name. |
Thou hast a mighty arm: strong is thy hand, and high is thy right hand. | 13Your arm is powerful, your hand strong, your right hand victorious. |
Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face. | 14Equity and justice are the foundation of your throne. Loyal love and faithfulness characterize your rule. |
Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O LORD, in the light of thy countenance. | 15How blessed are the people who worship you! O LORD, they experience your favor. |
In thy name shall they rejoice all the day: and in thy righteousness shall they be exalted. | 16They rejoice in your name all day long, and are vindicated by your justice. |
For thou art the glory of their strength: and in thy favour our horn shall be exalted. | 17For you give them splendor and strength. By your favor we are victorious. |
For the LORD is our defence; and the Holy One of Israel is our king. | 18For our shield belongs to the LORD, our king to the Holy One of Israel. |
Then thou spakest in vision to thy holy one, and saidst, I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people. | 19Then you spoke through a vision to your faithful followers and said: "I have energized a warrior; I have raised up a young man from the people. |
I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him: | 20I have discovered David, my servant. With my holy oil I have anointed him as king. |
With whom my hand shall be established: mine arm also shall strengthen him. | 21My hand will support him, and my arm will strengthen him. |
The enemy shall not exact upon him; nor the son of wickedness afflict him. | 22No enemy will be able to exact tribute from him; a violent oppressor will not be able to humiliate him. |
And I will beat down his foes before his face, and plague them that hate him. | 23I will crush his enemies before him; I will strike down those who hate him. |
But my faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him: and in my name shall his horn be exalted. | 24He will experience my faithfulness and loyal love, and by my name he will win victories. |
I will set his hand also in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers. | 25I will place his hand over the sea, his right hand over the rivers. |
He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation. | 26He will call out to me, 'You are my father, my God, and the protector who delivers me.' |
Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth. | 27I will appoint him to be my firstborn son, the most exalted of the earth's kings. |
My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him. | 28I will always extend my loyal love to him, and my covenant with him is secure. |
His seed also will I make to endure for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven. | 29I will give him an eternal dynasty, and make his throne as enduring as the skies above. |
If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments; | 30If his sons reject my law and disobey my regulations, |
If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments; | 31if they break my rules and do not keep my commandments, |
Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. | 32I will punish their rebellion by beating them with a club, their sin by inflicting them with bruises. |
Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail. | 33But I will not remove my loyal love from him, nor be unfaithful to my promise. |
My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips. | 34I will not break my covenant or go back on what I promised. |
Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David. | 35Once and for all I have vowed by my own holiness, I will never deceive David. |
His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me. | 36His dynasty will last forever. His throne will endure before me, like the sun, |
It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah. | 37it will remain stable, like the moon, his throne will endure like the skies." (Selah) |
But thou hast cast off and abhorred, thou hast been wroth with thine anointed. | 38But you have spurned and rejected him; you are angry with your chosen king. |
Thou hast made void the covenant of thy servant: thou hast profaned his crown by casting it to the ground. | 39You have repudiated your covenant with your servant; you have thrown his crown to the ground. |
Thou hast broken down all his hedges; thou hast brought his strong holds to ruin. | 40You have broken down all his walls; you have made his strongholds a heap of ruins. |
All that pass by the way spoil him: he is a reproach to his neighbours. | 41All who pass by have robbed him; he has become an object of disdain to his neighbors. |
Thou hast set up the right hand of his adversaries; thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice. | 42You have allowed his adversaries to be victorious, and all his enemies to rejoice. |
Thou hast also turned the edge of his sword, and hast not made him to stand in the battle. | 43You turn back his sword from the adversary, and have not sustained him in battle. |
Thou hast made his glory to cease, and cast his throne down to the ground. | 44You have brought to an end his splendor, and have knocked his throne to the ground. |
The days of his youth hast thou shortened: thou hast covered him with shame. Selah. | 45You have cut short his youth, and have covered him with shame. (Selah) |
How long, LORD? wilt thou hide thyself for ever? shall thy wrath burn like fire? | 46How long, O LORD, will this last? Will you remain hidden forever? Will your anger continue to burn like fire? |
Remember how short my time is: wherefore hast thou made all men in vain? | 47Take note of my brief lifespan! Why do you make all people so mortal? |
What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death? shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave? Selah. | 48No man can live on without experiencing death, or deliver his life from the power of Sheol. (Selah) |
Lord, where are thy former lovingkindnesses, which thou swarest unto David in thy truth? | 49Where are your earlier faithful deeds, O Lord, the ones performed in accordance with your reliable oath to David? |
Remember, Lord, the reproach of thy servants; how I do bear in my bosom the reproach of all the mighty people; | 50Take note, O Lord, of the way your servants are taunted, and of how I must bear so many insults from people! |
Wherewith thine enemies have reproached, O LORD; wherewith they have reproached the footsteps of thine anointed. | 51Your enemies, O LORD, hurl insults; they insult your chosen king as they dog his footsteps. |
Blessed be the LORD for evermore. Amen, and Amen. | 52The LORD deserves praise forevermore! We agree! We agree! |
