These are the terms of the covenant that the LORD commanded Moses to make with the Israelis in the land of Moab in addition to the covenant that he made with them in Horeb. 1 These are the terms of the covenant the LORD commanded Moses to make with the Israelites while they were in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Mount Sinai. Moses Reviews the Covenant
Moses called all Israel together and addressed them: "You saw everything that the LORD did before your eyes in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his servants, and to his whole country. 2 Moses summoned all the Israelites and said to them, “You have seen with your own eyes everything the LORD did in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to his whole country—
Those great feats that you saw with your own eyes are signs and great wonders. 3all the great tests of strength, the miraculous signs, and the amazing wonders.
Yet to this day, the LORD hasn't given you a heart that understands, eyes that perceive, and ears that discern. 4But to this day the LORD has not given you minds that understand, nor eyes that see, nor ears that hear!
Though I've led you for 40 years in the desert, neither your clothes nor your shoes have worn out. 5For forty years I led you through the wilderness, yet your clothes and sandals did not wear out.
You didn't have bread to eat or wine or anything intoxicating to drink, so that you would learn that I am the LORD your God. 6You ate no bread and drank no wine or other alcoholic drink, but he provided for you so you would know that he is the LORD your God.
Then you reached this place, where King Sihon of Heshbon and King Og of Bashan had come out to meet and fight with us, but we defeated them. 7“When we came here, King Sihon of Heshbon and King Og of Bashan came out to fight against us, but we defeated them.
We captured their land and handed it as an inheritance to the descendants of Reuben, the descendants of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh. 8We took their land and gave it to the tribes of Reuben and Gad and to the half-tribe of Manasseh as their grant of land.
Therefore, keep the terms of this covenant, carrying them out so that you'll be wise in everything you do."9“Therefore, obey the terms of this covenant so that you will prosper in everything you do.
"All of you are standing today in the presence of the LORD your God—the heads of your tribes, your elders, your magistrates, all the men of Israel, 10All of you—tribal leaders, elders, officers, all the men of Israel—are standing today in the presence of the LORD your God.
along with your children, your wives, even the foreigner in your camp, including the woodchopper and the water drawer—11Your little ones and your wives are with you, as well as the foreigners living among you who chop your wood and carry your water.
to enter into a covenant with the LORD your God and into the oath that he is about to make with you today, 12You are standing here today to enter into the covenant of the LORD your God. The LORD is making this covenant, including the curses.
so that he will elevate you to be a people for him. And he will be God to you, just as he promised you and swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 13By entering into the covenant today, he will establish you as his people and confirm that he is your God, just as he promised you and as he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Now, I'm not making this covenant and oath with you alone, 14“But you are not the only ones with whom I am making this covenant with its curses.
but with whoever is here with us standing in the presence of the LORD our God today, as well as with those who aren't here with us today."15I am making this covenant both with you who stand here today in the presence of the LORD our God, and also with the future generations who are not standing here today.
"Now, you know how we lived in the land of Egypt and how we traveled through the territory of other nations. 16“You remember how we lived in the land of Egypt and how we traveled through the lands of enemy nations as we left.
You have seen their detestable practices, their idols of wood, stone, silver, and gold that they had with them. 17You have seen their detestable practices and their idols made of wood, stone, silver, and gold.
Be alert so there is no man, woman, family, or a tribe whose heart is turning away from the LORD your God to go and serve the gods of those nations. Be alert so there will be no root among you that produces poisonous and bitter fruit,18I am making this covenant with you so that no one among you—no man, woman, clan, or tribe—will turn away from the LORD our God to worship these gods of other nations, and so that no root among you bears bitter and poisonous fruit.
because when such a person hears the words of this oath, he will bless himself and say: 'I will have a peaceful life, even though I'm determined to be stubborn.' By doing this he will be sweeping away both watered and parched ground alike.'19“Those who hear the warnings of this curse should not congratulate themselves, thinking, ‘I am safe, even though I am following the desires of my own stubborn heart.’ This would lead to utter ruin!
"The LORD won't forgive such a person. Instead, the zealous anger of the LORD will blaze against him. All the curses that were written in this book will fall on him. Then the LORD will wipe out his memory from under heaven. 20The LORD will never pardon such people. Instead his anger and jealousy will burn against them. All the curses written in this book will come down on them, and the LORD will erase their names from under heaven.
The LORD will set him apart from all the tribes of Israel for destruction, according to the curses of the covenant that were written in this Book of the Law."21The LORD will separate them from all the tribes of Israel, to pour out on them all the curses of the covenant recorded in this Book of Instruction.
"Then the generation to come—your descendants after you and the foreigners who come from afar—will see plagues and illnesses infecting the land that the LORD will inflict on it. 22“Then the generations to come, both your own descendants and the foreigners who come from distant lands, will see the devastation of the land and the diseases the LORD inflicts on it.
The whole land will be covered with salt pits and burning sulfur, with nothing planted, nothing sprouting, and producing no vegetation—overthrown like Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, when the LORD overthrew them in his raging fury. 23They will exclaim, ‘The whole land is devastated by sulfur and salt. It is a wasteland with nothing planted and nothing growing, not even a blade of grass. It is like the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD destroyed in his intense anger.’
All the nations will ask, 'Why did the LORD do this to this land? What is the meaning of this fierce and great anger?' 24“And all the surrounding nations will ask, ‘Why has the LORD done this to this land? Why was he so angry?’
Then they will answer themselves, 'Because they've abandoned the covenant of their LORD, the God of their ancestors that he had made with them when he brought them out of Egypt. 25“And the answer will be, ‘This happened because the people of the land abandoned the covenant that the LORD, the God of their ancestors, made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.
They followed and worshipped other gods whom they had not known and whom he did not assign to them. 26Instead, they turned away to serve and worship gods they had not known before, gods that were not from the LORD.
For this reason, the anger of the LORD raged against this land, to bring upon it all the curses that were written in this book. 27That is why the LORD’s anger has burned against this land, bringing down on it every curse recorded in this book.
The LORD uprooted them from the land in his anger, wrath, and great fury, deporting them to another land, and that's the way things are today.'28In great anger and fury the LORD uprooted his people from their land and banished them to another land, where they still live today!’
"The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but what has been revealed belongs to us and to our children forever, so that we might observe the words of this Law."29“The LORD our God has secrets known to no one. We are not accountable for them, but we and our children are accountable forever for all that he has revealed to us, so that we may obey all the terms of these instructions.
