Now as Jesus was passing by, He saw a man blind from birth,1As he was walking along, he observed a man who had been blind from birth.
and His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”2His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that caused him to be born blind?"
Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but this happened so that the works of God would be displayed in him.3Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned. This happened so that God's work might be revealed in him.
While it is daytime, we must do the works of Him who sent Me. Night is coming, when no one can work.4I must do the work of the one who sent me while it is day. Night is approaching, when no one can work.
While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”5As long as I'm in the world, I'm the light of the world."
When Jesus had said this, He spit on the ground, made some mud, and applied it to the man’s eyes.6After saying this, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he spread the mud on the man's eyes
Then He told him, “Go, wash in the Pool of Siloam” (which means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came back seeing.7and told him, "Go and wash in the pool of Siloam" (which is translated "Sent One"). So he went off, washed, and came back seeing.
At this, his neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging began to ask, “Isn’t this the man who used to sit and beg?”8Then the neighbors and those who had previously seen him as a beggar said, "This is the man who used to sit and beg, isn't it?"
Some claimed that he was, but others said, “No, he just looks like him.” But the man kept saying, “I am the one.”9Some were saying, "It's him," while others were saying, "No, but it's someone like him." But he himself kept saying, "It's me!"
“How then were your eyes opened?” they asked.10So they asked him, "How, then, did you gain your eyesight?"
He answered, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and anointed my eyes, and He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed and received my sight.”11He said, "The man named Jesus made some mud, spread it on my eyes, and told me, 'Go to Siloam and wash.' So off I went and washed, and I received my sight."
“Where is He?” they asked. “I do not know,” he answered.12They asked him, "Where is that man?" He said, "I don't know!"
They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.13So they brought to the Pharisees the man who had once been blind.
Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened his eyes was a Sabbath.14Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and healed his eyes.
So the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. The man answered, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and now I can see.”15So the Pharisees also began to ask him how he had gained his sight. He told them, "He put mud on my eyes, then I washed, and now I can see."
Because of this, some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for He does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a sinful man perform such signs?” And there was division among them.16Some of the Pharisees began to remark, "This man is not from God because he does not keep the Sabbath." But others were saying, "How can a sinful man perform such signs?" And there was a division among them.
So once again they asked the man who had been blind, “What do you say about Him, since it was your eyes He opened?” “He is a prophet,” the man replied.17So they asked the formerly blind man again, "What do you say about him, since it was your eyes he healed?" He said, "He is a prophet."
The Jews still did not believe that the man had been blind and had received his sight until they summoned his parents18The Jewish leaders did not believe that the man had been blind and had gained sight until they summoned his parents
and asked, “Is this your son, the one you say was born blind? So how is it that he can now see?”19and asked them, "Is this your son, the one you say was born blind? How does he now see?"
His parents answered, “We know he is our son, and we know he was born blind.20His parents replied, "We know that this is our son and that he was born blind.
But how he can now see or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him. He is old enough to speak for himself.”21But we don't know how it is that he now sees, and we don't know who opened his eyes. Ask him. He is of age and can speak for himself."
His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews. For the Jews had already determined that anyone who confessed Jesus as the Christ would be put out of the synagogue.22His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, since the Jewish leaders had already agreed that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be thrown out of the synagogue.
That was why his parents said, “He is old enough. Ask him.”23That's why his parents said, "He is of age. Ask him."
So a second time they called for the man who had been blind and said, “Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner.”24The Jewish leaders summoned the man who had been blind a second time and told him, "Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner."
He answered, “Whether He is a sinner I do not know. There is one thing I do know: I was blind, but now I see!”25But he responded, "I don't know whether he is a sinner or not. The one thing I do know is that I used to be blind and now I can see!"
“What did He do to you?” they asked. “How did He open your eyes?”26Then they asked him, "What did he do to you? How did he heal your eyes?"
He replied, “I already told you, and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become His disciples?”27He answered them, "I've already told you, but you didn't listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You don't want to become his disciples, too, do you?"
Then they heaped insults on him and said, “You are His disciple; we are disciples of Moses.28At this, they turned on him in fury and said, "You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses!
We know that God spoke to Moses, but we do not know where this man is from.”29We know that God has spoken to Moses, but we do not know where this fellow comes from."
“That is remarkable indeed!” the man said. “You do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes.30The man answered them, "This is an amazing thing! You don't know where he comes from, yet he healed my eyes.
We know that God does not listen to sinners, but He does listen to the one who worships Him and does His will.31We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but he does listen to anyone who worships him and does his will.
Never before has anyone heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind.32Ever since creation it has never been heard that anyone healed the eyes of a man who was born blind.
If this man were not from God, He could do no such thing.”33If this man were not from God, he couldn't do anything like that."
They replied, “You were born in utter sin, and you are instructing us?” And they threw him out.34They asked him, "You were born a sinner and you are trying to instruct us?" And they threw him out.
When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, He found the man and said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”35Jesus heard that they had thrown him out. So when he found him, he asked him, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"
“Who is He, Sir?” he replied. “Tell me so that I may believe in Him.”36He answered, "And who is he, sir? Tell me, so that I may believe in him."
“You have already seen Him,” Jesus answered. “He is the One speaking with you.”37Jesus told him, "You have seen him. He is the person who is talking with you."
“Lord, I believe,” he said. And he worshiped Jesus.38He said, "Lord, I do believe," and worshipped him.
Then Jesus declared, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind may see and those who see may become blind.”39Then Jesus said, "I have come into this world to judge it, so that those who are blind may see and so that those who see may become blind."
Some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard this, and they asked Him, “Are we blind too?”40Some of the Pharisees who were near him overheard this and asked him, "We aren't blind, too, are we?"
“If you were blind,” Jesus replied, “you would not be guilty of sin. But since you claim you can see, your guilt remains.”41Jesus told them, "If you were blind, you would not have any sin. But now that you insist, 'We see,' your sin still exists."
