The word "pledge" in Hebrew is "עֵרָבוֹן" (eravon), which refers to a security or guarantee. This reflects the ancient Near Eastern practice of providing a tangible assurance in transactions. Judah's willingness to offer a pledge indicates his desire to fulfill his immediate desires, even at the cost of his personal items, which were symbols of his identity and authority.
