The Suffering Servant
(Acts 8:26–40; 1 Peter 2:21–25)
1 מִ֥י (Who) הֶאֱמִ֖ין (has believed) לִשְׁמֻעָתֵ֑נוּ (in our report)?
וּזְר֥וֹעַ (And the arm) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) עַל־ (to) מִ֥י (whom) נִגְלָֽתָה׃ (has it been revealed)?
2 וַיַּ֨עַל (For He grew up) כַּיּוֹנֵ֜ק (as a tender shoot), לְפָנָ֗יו (before His face)
וְכַשֹּׁ֙רֶשׁ֙ (and as a root) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (out of a land); צִיָּ֔ה (dry)
לֹא־ (no) תֹ֥אַר (form was) ל֖וֹ (unto Him) וְלֹ֣א (and not any) הָדָ֑ר (splendor); וְנִרְאֵ֥הוּ (that we should look at him)
וְלֹֽא־ (and no) מַרְאֶ֖ה (appearance) וְנֶחְמְדֵֽהוּ׃ (that we should desire him).
3 נִבְזֶה֙ (He was despised) וַחֲדַ֣ל (and rejected) אִישִׁ֔ים (by men);
אִ֥ישׁ (a man) מַכְאֹב֖וֹת (of sorrows), וִיד֣וּעַ (and acquainted) חֹ֑לִי (with weakness);
וּכְמַסְתֵּ֤ר (and like a cause for hiding) פָּנִים֙ (their faces) מִמֶּ֔נּוּ (from him)
נִבְזֶ֖ה (he was despised), וְלֹ֥א (not) חֲשַׁבְנֻֽהוּ׃ (and we esteemed him).
4 אָכֵ֤ן (Surely) חֳלָיֵ֙נוּ֙ (our sicknesses), ה֣וּא (He) נָשָׂ֔א (has lifted)
וּמַכְאֹבֵ֖ינוּ (and our sorrows); סְבָלָ֑ם (has borne)
וַאֲנַ֣חְנוּ (and we) חֲשַׁבְנֻ֔הוּ (considered Him) נָג֛וּעַ (stricken),
מֻכֵּ֥ה (struck by) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God), וּמְעֻנֶּֽה׃ (and afflicted).
5 וְהוּא֙ (And he) מְחֹלָ֣ל (was pierced) מִפְּשָׁעֵ֔נוּ (for our transgressions),
מְדֻכָּ֖א (crushed) מֵעֲוֺנֹתֵ֑ינוּ (for our iniquities);
מוּסַ֤ר (the chastisement) שְׁלוֹמֵ֙נוּ֙ (of our peace) עָלָ֔יו (was upon Him)
וּבַחֲבֻרָת֖וֹ (and by His stripes) נִרְפָּא־ (there is healing) לָֽנוּ׃ (for us).
6 כֻּלָּ֙נוּ֙ (We all) כַּצֹּ֣אן (like sheep) תָּעִ֔ינוּ (have gone astray);
אִ֥ישׁ (each man) לְדַרְכּ֖וֹ (to his own way); פָּנִ֑ינוּ (we have turned)
וַֽיהוָה֙ (and YHWH) הִפְגִּ֣יעַ (has placed) בּ֔וֹ (on him) אֵ֖ת (-)
עֲוֺ֥ן (the iniquity) כֻּלָּֽנוּ׃ (of us all).
7 נִגַּ֨שׂ (He was oppressed), וְה֣וּא (and he) נַעֲנֶה֮ (was afflicted),
וְלֹ֣א (and not) יִפְתַּח־ (does he open) פִּיו֒ (his mouth);
כַּשֶּׂה֙ (like a lamb) לַטֶּ֣בַח (to the slaughter), יוּבָ֔ל (led)
וּכְרָחֵ֕ל (and like a sheep) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the faces) גֹזְזֶ֖יהָ (of her shearers) נֶאֱלָ֑מָה (is silent),
וְלֹ֥א (so not) יִפְתַּ֖ח (He did open) פִּֽיו׃ (his mouth).
8 מֵעֹ֤צֶר (By restraint) וּמִמִּשְׁפָּט֙ (and by judgment); לֻקָּ֔ח (He was taken away)
וְאֶת־ (and) דּוֹר֖וֹ (His generation)? מִ֣י (Who) יְשׂוֹחֵ֑חַ (can recount)
כִּ֤י (For) נִגְזַר֙ (He was cut off) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (from the land) חַיִּ֔ים (of the living);
מִפֶּ֥שַׁע (for the transgression) עַמִּ֖י (of My people) נֶ֥גַע (was stricken) לָֽמוֹ׃ (to him).
A Grave Assigned

9 וַיִּתֵּ֤ן (And He appointed) אֶת־ (with) רְשָׁעִים֙ (the wicked), קִבְר֔וֹ (His grave)
וְאֶת־ (and with) עָשִׁ֖יר (a rich one) בְּמֹתָ֑יו (in his death);
עַ֚ל (although) לֹא־ (no) חָמָ֣ס (violence), עָשָׂ֔ה (He had done)
וְלֹ֥א (and not) מִרְמָ֖ה (deceit) בְּפִֽיו׃ (was in his mouth).
10 וַיהוָ֞ה (And YHWH) חָפֵ֤ץ (has delighted) דַּכְּאוֹ֙ (to bruise Him)
הֶֽחֱלִ֔י (and Make Him weak);
אִם־ (if) תָּשִׂ֤ים (is made) אָשָׁם֙ (a guilt offering), נַפְשׁ֔וֹ (his soul)
יִרְאֶ֥ה (He will see) זֶ֖רַע (his seed), יַאֲרִ֣יךְ (He will prolong) יָמִ֑ים (His days),
וְחֵ֥פֶץ (and the delight) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) בְּיָד֥וֹ (in His hand) יִצְלָֽח׃ (will prosper). Of
11 מֵעֲמַ֤ל (after the anguish) נַפְשׁוֹ֙ (of His soul), יִרְאֶ֣ה (He will see)
יִשְׂבָּ֔ע (and be satisfied);
בְּדַעְתּ֗וֹ (By His knowledge) יַצְדִּ֥יק (will bring righteousness) צַדִּ֛יק (the righteous one) עַבְדִּ֖י (My Servant) לָֽרַבִּ֑ים (to many);
וַעֲוֺנֹתָ֖ם (and their iniquities) ה֥וּא (He) יִסְבֹּֽל׃ (will bear).
12 לָכֵ֞ן (Therefore) אֲחַלֶּק־ (I will divide a portion) ל֣וֹ (to him) בָרַבִּ֗ים (with the many),
וְאֶת־ (and with) עֲצוּמִים֮ (the mighty); יְחַלֵּ֣ק (he will divide) שָׁלָל֒ (the spoil)
תַּ֗חַת (upon) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) הֶעֱרָ֤ה (he poured out) לַמָּ֙וֶת֙ (to the death), נַפְשׁ֔וֹ (his soul)
וְאֶת־ (and with) פֹּשְׁעִ֖ים (the transgressors); נִמְנָ֑ה (he was numbered)
וְהוּא֙ (and he himself) חֵטְא־ (the sin) רַבִּ֣ים (of many), נָשָׂ֔א (bore)
וְלַפֹּשְׁעִ֖ים (and for the transgressors) יַפְגִּֽיעַ׃ס (made intercession).
