Habakkuk’s Prayer

1  תְּפִלָּ֖ה (A prayer) לַחֲבַקּ֣וּק (of Habakkuk) הַנָּבִ֑יא (the prophet) עַ֖ל (according to) שִׁגְיֹנֽוֹת׃ (Shigionoth).

2  יְהוָ֗ה (O YHWH), שָׁמַ֣עְתִּי (I have heard) שִׁמְעֲךָ֮ (the report of You),

יָרֵאתִי֒ (and I was afraid). יְהוָ֗ה (O YHWH), פָּֽעָלְךָ֙ (of Your work)

בְּקֶ֤רֶב (in the midst) שָׁנִים֙ (of the years), חַיֵּ֔יהוּ (may You revive it)

בְּקֶ֥רֶב (in the midst) שָׁנִ֖ים (of the years) תּוֹדִ֑יעַ (make it known);

בְּרֹ֖גֶז (in wrath) רַחֵ֥ם (to have compassion) תִּזְכּֽוֹר׃ (may You remember).

3  אֱל֙וֹהַ֙ (God) מִתֵּימָ֣ן (from Teman) יָב֔וֹא (came)

וְקָד֥וֹשׁ (and the Holy One) מֵֽהַר־ (from Mount) פָּארָ֖ן (Paran).

סֶ֑לָה (Selah).

כִּסָּ֤ה (Covered) שָׁמַ֙יִם֙ (the heavens), הוֹד֔וֹ (His glory)

וּתְהִלָּת֖וֹ (and of His praise) מָלְאָ֥ה (was full) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the earth).

4  וְנֹ֙גַהּ֙ (And His brightness) כָּא֣וֹר (like the light); תִּֽהְיֶ֔ה (was)

קַרְנַ֥יִם (rays were) מִיָּד֖וֹ (from His hand), ל֑וֹ (unto Him)

וְשָׁ֖ם (and there) חֶבְי֥וֹן (was the hiding) עֻזֹּֽה׃ (of His power).

5  לְפָנָ֖יו (Before His face) יֵ֣לֶךְ (went) דָּ֑בֶר (pestilence),

וְיֵצֵ֥א (and came forth) רֶ֖שֶׁף (plague) לְרַגְלָֽיו׃ (at His feet).

6  עָמַ֣ד׀ (He stood), וַיְמֹ֣דֶד (and measured) אֶ֗רֶץ (the earth);

רָאָה֙ (He looked), וַיַּתֵּ֣ר (and startled) גּוֹיִ֔ם (the nations);

וַיִּתְפֹּֽצְצוּ֙ (and were scattered), הַרְרֵי־ (the mountains) עַ֔ד (ancient)

שַׁח֖וּ (bowed). גִּבְע֣וֹת (The hills) עוֹלָ֑ם (of old)

הֲלִיכ֥וֹת (the ways) עוֹלָ֖ם (of old) לֽוֹ׃ (are unto Him).

7  תַּ֣חַת (Under) אָ֔וֶן (affliction), רָאִ֖יתִי (I have seen) אָהֳלֵ֣י (the tents) כוּשָׁ֑ן (of Cushan)

יִרְגְּז֕וּן (were trembling). יְרִיע֖וֹת (The curtains) אֶ֥רֶץ (of the land) מִדְיָֽן׃ס (of Midian).

8  הֲבִנְהָרִים֙ (Against the rivers)? חָרָ֣ה (Did it burn) יְהוָ֔ה (O YHWH)

אִ֤ם (-) בַּנְּהָרִים֙ (against the rivers)? אַפֶּ֔ךָ (Your anger)

אִם־ (or was) בַּיָּ֖ם (against the sea), עֶבְרָתֶ֑ךָ (Your wrath)

כִּ֤י (when) תִרְכַּב֙ (You rode) עַל־ (on) סוּסֶ֔יךָ (Your horses)

מַרְכְּבֹתֶ֖יךָ (Your chariots) יְשׁוּעָֽה׃ (of salvation)?

9  עֶרְיָ֤ה (With nakedness) תֵעוֹר֙ (was uncovered), קַשְׁתֶּ֔ךָ (Your bow)

שְׁבֻע֥וֹת (was sworn) מַטּ֖וֹת (for arrows), אֹ֣מֶר (speech).

סֶ֑לָה (Selah).

נְהָר֖וֹת (With rivers) תְּבַקַּע־ (You split) אָֽרֶץ׃ (the earth).

10  רָא֤וּךָ (Saw You) יָחִ֙ילוּ֙ (and trembled); הָרִ֔ים (the mountains)

זֶ֥רֶם (a storm) מַ֖יִם (of waters) עָבָ֑ר (passed by);

נָתַ֤ן (gave forth) תְּהוֹם֙ (the deep) קוֹל֔וֹ (its voice),

ר֖וֹם (and on high) יָדֵ֥יהוּ (its hand) נָשָֽׂא׃ (lifted).

11  שֶׁ֥מֶשׁ (The sun) יָרֵ֖חַ (and moon) עָ֣מַד (stood still)

זְבֻ֑לָה (in its high place);

לְא֤וֹר (at the light) חִצֶּ֙יךָ֙ (of Your arrows) יְהַלֵּ֔כוּ (they went forth),

לְנֹ֖גַהּ (at the brightness) בְּרַ֥ק (of the flashing) חֲנִיתֶֽךָ׃ (of Your spear).

12  בְּזַ֖עַם (In wrath), תִּצְעַד־ (You marched through) אָ֑רֶץ (the land)

בְּאַ֖ף (in anger) תָּד֥וּשׁ (You trampled) גּוֹיִֽם׃ (the nations).

13  יָצָ֙אתָ֙ (You went forth) לְיֵ֣שַׁע (for the salvation) עַמֶּ֔ךָ (of Your people),

לְיֵ֖שַׁע (for salvation) אֶת־ (with) מְשִׁיחֶ֑ךָ (Your anointed);

מָחַ֤צְתָּ (You struck) רֹּאשׁ֙ (the head) מִבֵּ֣ית (of the house) רָשָׁ֔ע (of the wicked),

עָר֛וֹת (uncovering him) יְס֥וֹד (from base) עַד־ (to) צַוָּ֖אר (neck)

סֶֽלָה׃פ (Selah).

14  נָקַ֤בְתָּ (You pierced) בְמַטָּיו֙ (with his staves) רֹ֣אשׁ (the head) פְּרָזוֹ (of his warriors).

יִסְעֲר֖וּ (They stormed out) לַהֲפִיצֵ֑נִי (to scatter me)

עֲלִ֣יצֻתָ֔ם (in their rejoicing) כְּמוֹ־ (as) לֶאֱכֹ֥ל (one who devours)

עָנִ֖י (the afflicted) בַּמִּסְתָּֽר׃ (in his hiding place).

15  דָּרַ֥כְתָּ (You tread) בַיָּ֖ם (on the sea) סוּסֶ֑יךָ (with Your horses),

חֹ֖מֶר (a surge) מַ֥יִם (of waters) רַבִּֽים׃ (great).

16  שָׁמַ֣עְתִּי׀ (I heard it), וַתִּרְגַּ֣ז (and trembled); בִּטְנִ֗י (my belly)

לְקוֹל֙ (at the sound); צָלֲל֣וּ (quivered) שְׂפָתַ֔י (my lips)

יָב֥וֹא (came into) רָקָ֛ב (decay) בַּעֲצָמַ֖י (my bones),

וְתַחְתַּ֣י (and from under me) אֶרְגָּ֑ז (I trembled)

אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) אָנ֙וּחַ֙ (I might rest) לְי֣וֹם (in the day) צָרָ֔ה (of distress),

לַעֲל֖וֹת (to come upon) לְעַ֥ם (the people), יְגוּדֶֽנּוּ׃ (who invade us).

Habakkuk Rejoices

17  כִּֽי־ (Though) תְאֵנָ֣ה (the fig tree) לֹֽא־ (not) תִפְרָ֗ח (does bud),

וְאֵ֤ין (and there be no) יְבוּל֙ (fruit) בַּגְּפָנִ֔ים (on the vines);

כִּחֵשׁ֙ (though may fail), מַעֲשֵׂה־ (the work) זַ֔יִת (of the olive)

וּשְׁדֵמ֖וֹת (and the fields) לֹא־ (not) עָ֣שָׂה (produce) אֹ֑כֶל (food);

גָּזַ֤ר (though may be cut off) מִמִּכְלָה֙ (from the fold), צֹ֔אן (the flock)

וְאֵ֥ין (and there) בָּקָ֖ר (herd is) בָּרְפָתִֽים׃ (in the stalls),

18  וַאֲנִ֖י (yet I) בַּיהוָ֣ה (in YHWH), אֶעְל֑וֹזָה (will exult)

אָגִ֖ילָה (I will rejoice) בֵּאלֹהֵ֥י (in the God) יִשְׁעִֽי׃ (of my salvation).

19  יְהוִ֤הּ (YHWH) אֲדֹנָי֙ (the Lord is) חֵילִ֔י (my strength),

וַיָּ֤שֶׂם (and He will make) רַגְלַי֙ (my feet) כָּֽאַיָּל֔וֹת (like a deer’s)

וְעַ֥ל (and on) בָּמוֹתַ֖י (my high places). יַדְרִכֵ֑נִי (He makes me tread)

לַמְנַצֵּ֖חַ (To the one directing) בִּנְגִינוֹתָֽי׃ (with stringed instruments).
