Ahijah’s Prophecy against Jeroboam

1 בָּעֵ֣ת (At the time) הַהִ֔יא (that) חָלָ֖ה (became sick) אֲבִיָּ֥ה (Abijah) בֶן־ (son) יָרָבְעָֽם׃ (of Jeroboam).

2 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יָרָבְעָ֜ם (Jeroboam) לְאִשְׁתּ֗וֹ (to his wife), ק֤וּמִי (Arise), נָא֙ (please), וְהִשְׁתַּנִּ֔ית (and disguise yourself), וְלֹ֣א (that not) יֵֽדְע֔וּ (they may recognize) כִּי־ (that) אַתִּי (you) אֵ֣שֶׁת (are the wife) יָרָבְעָ֑ם (of Jeroboam), וְהָלַ֣כְתְּ (and go) שִׁלֹ֗ה (to Shiloh). הִנֵּה־ (Behold), שָׁם֙ (there) אֲחִיָּ֣ה (is Ahijah) הַנָּבִ֔יא (the prophet); הֽוּא־ (he) דִבֶּ֥ר (spoke) עָלַ֛י (concerning me) לְמֶ֖לֶךְ (as king) עַל־ (over) הָעָ֥ם (the people) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

3 וְלָקַ֣חַתְּ (And take) בְּ֠יָדֵךְ (with you) עֲשָׂרָ֨ה (ten) לֶ֧חֶם (loaves), וְנִקֻּדִ֛ים (and some cakes), וּבַקְבֻּ֥ק (and a jar) דְּבַ֖שׁ (of honey), וּבָ֣את (and go) אֵלָ֑יו (to him). ה֚וּא (He) יַגִּ֣יד (will tell) לָ֔ךְ (you) מַה־ (what) יִּֽהְיֶ֖ה (will become) לַנָּֽעַר׃ (of the child).

4 וַתַּ֤עַשׂ (And did) כֵּן֙ (so) אֵ֣שֶׁת (the wife) יָרָבְעָ֔ם (of Jeroboam), וַתָּ֙קָם֙ (and she arose) וַתֵּ֣לֶךְ (and went) שִׁלֹ֔ה (to Shiloh) וַתָּבֹ֖א (and came) בֵּ֣ית (to the house) אֲחִיָּ֑ה (of Ahijah). וַאֲחִיָּ֙הוּ֙ (And Ahijah) לֹֽא־ (not) יָכֹ֣ל (could) לִרְא֔וֹת (see), כִּ֛י (for) קָ֥מוּ (were glazed) עֵינָ֖יו (his eyes) מִשֵּׂיבֽוֹ׃ס (because of his age).

5 וַיהוָ֞ה (And YHWH) אָמַ֣ר (had said) אֶל־ (to) אֲחִיָּ֗הוּ (Ahijah), הִנֵּ֣ה (Behold), אֵ֣שֶׁת (the wife) יָרָבְעָ֡ם (of Jeroboam) בָּאָ֣ה (is coming) לִדְרֹשׁ֩ (to seek) דָּבָ֨ר (a word) מֵעִמְּךָ֤ (from you) אֶל־ (about) בְּנָהּ֙ (her son), כִּֽי־ (for) חֹלֶ֣ה (sick) ה֔וּא (he is). כָּזֹ֥ה (This) וְכָזֶ֖ה (and this) תְּדַבֵּ֣ר (you shall say) אֵלֶ֑יהָ (to her), וִיהִ֣י (and it will come to pass) כְבֹאָ֔הּ (when she comes in), וְהִ֖יא (that she) מִתְנַכֵּרָֽה׃ (will be disguised).

6 וַיְהִי֩ (And it came to pass), כִשְׁמֹ֨עַ (when heard) אֲחִיָּ֜הוּ (Ahijah) אֶת־ (-) ק֤וֹל (the sound) רַגְלֶ֙יהָ֙ (of her footsteps) בָּאָ֣ה (as she came) בַפֶּ֔תַח (through the door), וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (that he said), בֹּ֖אִי (Come in), אֵ֣שֶׁת (wife) יָרָבְעָ֑ם (of Jeroboam)! לָ֣מָּה (Why) זֶּ֗ה (is this that) אַ֚תְּ (you) מִתְנַכֵּרָ֔ה (are disguised)? וְאָ֣נֹכִ֔י (And for I) שָׁל֥וּחַ (am sent) אֵלַ֖יִךְ (to you) קָשָֽׁה׃ (with a harsh thing).

7 לְכִ֞י (Go) אִמְרִ֣י (tell) לְיָרָבְעָ֗ם (Jeroboam), כֹּֽה־ (thus) אָמַ֤ר (says) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), יַ֛עַן (Because) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) הֲרִימֹתִ֖יךָ (I exalted you) מִתּ֣וֹךְ (from the midst) הָעָ֑ם (of the people) וָאֶתֶּנְךָ֣ (and made you) נָגִ֔יד (ruler) עַ֖ל (over) עַמִּ֥י (My people) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (Israel),

8 וָאֶקְרַ֤ע (and I tore away) אֶת־ (-) הַמַּמְלָכָה֙ (the kingdom) מִבֵּ֣ית (from the house) דָּוִ֔ד (of David) וָאֶתְּנֶ֖הָ (and gave it) לָ֑ךְ (to you), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) הָיִ֜יתָ (you have been) כְּעַבְדִּ֣י (as My servant) דָוִ֗ד (David) אֲשֶׁר֩ (who) שָׁמַ֨ר (kept) מִצְוֺתַ֜י (My commandments) וַאֲשֶׁר־ (and who) הָלַ֤ךְ (followed) אַחֲרַי֙ (Me) בְּכָל־ (with all) לְבָב֔וֹ (his heart), לַעֲשׂ֕וֹת (to do) רַ֖ק (only) הַיָּשָׁ֥ר (right) בְּעֵינָֽי׃ (in My eyes)—

9 וַתָּ֣רַע (and evil) לַעֲשׂ֔וֹת (you have done) מִכֹּ֖ל (more than all) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) הָי֣וּ (were) לְפָנֶ֑יךָ (before you), וַתֵּ֡לֶךְ (and for you have gone) וַתַּעֲשֶׂה־ (and made) לְּךָ֩ (for yourself) אֱלֹהִ֨ים (gods) אֲחֵרִ֤ים (other), וּמַסֵּכוֹת֙ (and molten images) לְהַכְעִיסֵ֔נִי (to provoke Me to anger), וְאֹתִ֥י (and Me) הִשְׁלַ֖כְתָּ (you have cast) אַחֲרֵ֥י (behind) גַוֶּֽךָ׃ס (your back)—

10 לָכֵ֗ן (therefore) הִנְנִ֨י (behold) מֵבִ֤יא (I will bring) רָעָה֙ (disaster) אֶל־ (on) בֵּ֣ית (the house) יָרָבְעָ֔ם (of Jeroboam): וְהִכְרַתִּ֤י (And I will cut off) לְיָֽרָבְעָם֙ (from Jeroboam) מַשְׁתִּ֣ין (he who urinates) בְּקִ֔יר (against the wall), עָצ֥וּר (bond) וְעָז֖וּב (and free) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (in Israel), וּבִֽעַרְתִּי֙ (and I will burn up) אַחֲרֵ֣י (the remnant) בֵית־ (of the house) יָרָבְעָ֔ם (of Jeroboam) כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר (as) יְבַעֵ֥ר (one burns up) הַגָּלָ֖ל (the dung) עַד־ (until) תֻּמּֽוֹ׃ (it is gone).

11 הַמֵּ֨ת (Whoever dies) לְיָֽרָבְעָ֤ם (of Jeroboam) בָּעִיר֙ (in the city) יֹאכְל֣וּ (shall eat) הַכְּלָבִ֔ים (the dogs), וְהַמֵּת֙ (and whoever dies) בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה (in the field) יֹאכְל֖וּ (shall eat) ע֣וֹף (the birds) הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם (of the heavens). כִּ֥י (For) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) דִּבֵּֽר׃ (has spoken).

12 וְאַ֥תְּ (And you) ק֖וּמִי (arise), לְכִ֣י (go) לְבֵיתֵ֑ךְ (to your own house). בְּבֹאָ֥ה (When enter) רַגְלַ֛יִךְ (your feet) הָעִ֖ירָה (the city), וּמֵ֥ת (and shall die) הַיָּֽלֶד׃ (the child).

13 וְסָֽפְדוּ־ (And shall mourn) ל֤וֹ (for him) כָל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel) וְקָבְר֣וּ (and bury) אֹת֔וֹ (him), כִּֽי־ (for) זֶ֣ה (this is) לְבַדּ֔וֹ (the only one) יָבֹ֥א (who shall come) לְיָרָבְעָ֖ם (of Jeroboam) אֶל־ (to) קָ֑בֶר (the grave), יַ֣עַן (because) נִמְצָא־ (there is found) ב֞וֹ (in him) דָּבָ֣ר (something) ט֗וֹב (good) אֶל־ (toward) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) בְּבֵ֥ית (in the house) יָרָבְעָֽם׃ (of Jeroboam).

14 וְהֵקִים֩ (And will raise up) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) ל֥וֹ (for Himself) מֶ֙לֶךְ֙ (a king) עַל־ (over) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) יַכְרִ֛ית (shall cut off) אֶת־ (-) בֵּ֥ית (the house) יָרָבְעָ֖ם (of Jeroboam). זֶ֣ה (This is) הַיּ֑וֹם (the day)— וּמֶ֖ה (and what)? גַּם־ (Even) עָֽתָּה׃ (now)!

15 וְהִכָּ֨ה (And for will strike) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (Israel) כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר (as) יָנ֣וּד (is shaken) הַקָּנֶה֮ (the reed) בַּמַּיִם֒ (in the waters), וְנָתַ֣שׁ (and He will uproot) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (Israel) מֵ֠עַל (from) הָאֲדָמָ֨ה (the land) הַטּוֹבָ֤ה (good) הַזֹּאת֙ (this) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) נָתַן֙ (He gave) לַאֲב֣וֹתֵיהֶ֔ם (to their fathers), וְזֵרָ֖ם (and He will scatter them) מֵעֵ֣בֶר (beyond) לַנָּהָ֑ר (the River) יַ֗עַן (upon) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) עָשׂוּ֙ (they have made) אֶת־ (-) אֲשֵׁ֣רֵיהֶ֔ם (their Asherah poles), מַכְעִיסִ֖ים (which provoked to anger) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

16 וְיִתֵּ֖ן (And He will give up) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel) בִּגְלַ֞ל (because) חַטֹּ֤אות (of the sins) יָֽרָבְעָם֙ (of Jeroboam), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) חָטָ֔א (sinned), וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר (and who) הֶחֱטִ֖יא (caused to sin) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (Israel).

17 וַתָּ֙קָם֙ (And arose) אֵ֣שֶׁת (the wife) יָרָבְעָ֔ם (of Jeroboam) וַתֵּ֖לֶךְ (and departed) וַתָּבֹ֣א (and came) תִרְצָ֑תָה (to Tirzah); הִ֛יא (she) בָּאָ֥ה (was entering) בְסַף־ (to the threshold) הַבַּ֖יִת (of the house), וְהַנַּ֥עַר (and the child) מֵֽת׃ (died).

18 וַיִּקְבְּר֥וּ (And they buried) אֹת֛וֹ (him), וַיִּסְפְּדוּ־ (and mourned) ל֖וֹ (for him) כָּל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel) כִּדְבַ֤ר (according to the word) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (which) דִּבֶּ֔ר (He spoke) בְּיַד־ (by the hand of) עַבְדּ֖וֹ (His servant) אֲחִיָּ֥הוּ (Ahijah) הַנָּבִֽיא׃ (the prophet).

Nadab Succeeds Jeroboam

19 וְיֶ֙תֶר֙ (And the rest) דִּבְרֵ֣י (of the acts) יָֽרָבְעָ֔ם (of Jeroboam), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (how) נִלְחַ֖ם (he made war) וַאֲשֶׁ֣ר (and how) מָלָ֑ךְ (he reigned), הִנָּ֣ם (behold), כְּתוּבִ֗ים (they are written) עַל־ (in) סֵ֛פֶר (the Book) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the Chronicles) הַיָּמִ֖ים (of the Days) לְמַלְכֵ֥י (of the Kings) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

20 וְהַיָּמִים֙ (And the days) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) מָלַ֣ךְ (reigned) יָרָבְעָ֔ם (Jeroboam) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (were twenty) וּשְׁתַּ֖יִם (and two) שָׁנָ֑ה (years), וַיִּשְׁכַּב֙ (and he rested) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֔יו (his fathers), וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ (and reigned) נָדָ֥ב (Nadab) בְּנ֖וֹ (his son) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃פ (in his place).

21 וּרְחַבְעָם֙ (And Rehoboam) בֶּן־ (son) שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה (of Solomon) מָלַ֖ךְ (reigned) בִּֽיהוּדָ֑ה (in Judah). בֶּן־ (A son) אַרְבָּעִ֣ים (of forty) וְאַחַ֣ת (and one) שָׁנָה֩ (years) רְחַבְעָ֨ם (Rehoboam was) בְּמָלְכ֜וֹ (in his reigning), וּֽשֲׁבַ֨ע (and seven) עֶשְׂרֵ֥ה (and ten) שָׁנָ֣ה׀ (years) מָלַ֣ךְ (he reigned) בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֗ם (in Jerusalem), הָ֠עִיר (the city) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) בָּחַ֨ר (had chosen) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) לָשׂ֨וּם (to put) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמ֥וֹ (His name) שָׁם֙ (in it) מִכֹּל֙ (out of all) שִׁבְטֵ֣י (the tribes) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel). וְשֵׁ֣ם (And the name) אִמּ֔וֹ (of his mother) נַעֲמָ֖ה (was Naamah) הָעַמֹּנִֽית׃ (the Ammonitess).

22 וַיַּ֧עַשׂ (And did) יְהוּדָ֛ה (Judah) הָרַ֖ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וַיְקַנְא֣וּ (and they provoked to jealousy) אֹת֗וֹ (Him) מִכֹּל֙ (more than all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשׂ֣וּ (had done) אֲבֹתָ֔ם (their fathers) בְּחַטֹּאתָ֖ם (by their sins) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) חָטָֽאוּ׃ (they sinned).

23 וַיִּבְנ֨וּ (And for built) גַם־ (even) הֵ֧מָּה (they) לָהֶ֛ם (for themselves) בָּמ֥וֹת (high places), וּמַצֵּב֖וֹת (and pillars), וַאֲשֵׁרִ֑ים (and Asherah poles) עַ֚ל (on) כָּל־ (every) גִּבְעָ֣ה (hill) גְבֹהָ֔ה (high) וְתַ֖חַת (and under) כָּל־ (every) עֵ֥ץ (tree) רַעֲנָֽן׃ (green).

24 וְגַם־ (And also) קָדֵ֖שׁ (male shrine prostitutes) הָיָ֣ה (there were) בָאָ֑רֶץ (in the land). עָשׂ֗וּ (They did) כְּכֹל֙ (according to all) הַתּוֹעֲבֹ֣ת (the abominations) הַגּוֹיִ֔ם (of the nations) אֲשֶׁר֙ (that) הוֹרִ֣ישׁ (had cast out) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) מִפְּנֵ֖י (before) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ (of Israel).

25 וַיְהִ֛י (And it came to pass) בַּשָּׁנָ֥ה (in the year) הַחֲמִישִׁ֖ית (fifth) לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (of king) רְחַבְעָ֑ם (Rehoboam), עָלָ֛ה (that came up) שׁוּשַׁק (Shishak) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (King) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt) עַל־ (against) יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (Jerusalem).

26 וַיִּקַּ֞ח (And he took away) אֶת־ (-) אֹצְר֣וֹת (the treasures) בֵּית־ (of the house) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH), וְאֶת־ (and) אֽוֹצְרוֹת֙ (the treasures) בֵּ֣ית (of house) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (of the king). וְאֶת־ (And) הַכֹּ֖ל (the entirety) לָקָ֑ח (he has taken), וַיִּקַּח֙ (and he took) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) מָגִנֵּ֣י (the shields) הַזָּהָ֔ב (gold) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) עָשָׂ֖ה (had made) שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ (Solomon).

27 וַיַּ֨עַשׂ (And made) הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ (King) רְחַבְעָם֙ (Rehoboam) תַּחְתָּ֔ם (in their place) מָגִנֵּ֖י (shields) נְחֹ֑שֶׁת (bronze) וְהִפְקִ֗יד (and committed them) עַל־ (to) יַד֙ (the hands) שָׂרֵ֣י (of the captains) הָרָצִ֔ים (of the guards) הַשֹּׁ֣מְרִ֔ים (who guarded) פֶּ֖תַח (the doorway) בֵּ֥ית (of the house) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (of the king).

28 וַיְהִ֛י (And) מִדֵּי־ (whenever) בֹ֥א (entered) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) בֵּ֣ית (the house) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), יִשָּׂאוּם֙ (carried them) הָֽרָצִ֔ים (the guards) וֶהֱשִׁיב֖וּם (and brought them back) אֶל־ (into) תָּ֥א (chamber) הָרָצִֽים׃ (the guardroom).

29 וְיֶ֛תֶר (And the rest) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the acts) רְחַבְעָ֖ם (of Rehoboam) וְכָל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשָׂ֑ה (he did), הֲלֹא־ (are not) הֵ֣מָּה (they) כְתוּבִ֗ים (written) עַל־ (in) סֵ֛פֶר (the Book) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the Chronicles) הַיָּמִ֖ים (of the Days) לְמַלְכֵ֥י (of the Kings) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah)?

30 וּמִלְחָמָ֨ה (And war) הָיְתָ֧ה (there was) בֵין־ (between) רְחַבְעָ֛ם (Rehoboam) וּבֵ֥ין (and between) יָרָבְעָ֖ם (Jeroboam) כָּל־ (all) הַיָּמִֽים׃ (the days).

31 וַיִּשְׁכַּ֨ב (And rested) רְחַבְעָ֜ם (Rehoboam) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֗יו (his fathers) וַיִּקָּבֵ֤ר (and was buried) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָיו֙ (his fathers) בְּעִ֣יר (in the City) דָּוִ֔ד (of David). וְשֵׁ֣ם (And the name) אִמּ֔וֹ (of his mother) נַעֲמָ֖ה (was Naamah) הָעַמֹּנִ֑ית (the Ammonitess). וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ (And reigned) אֲבִיָּ֥ם (Abijam) בְּנ֖וֹ (his son) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃פ (in his place).
