Solomon’s Foreign Wives

1  וְהַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (And King) שְׁלֹמֹ֗ה (Solomon) אָהַ֞ב (loved) נָשִׁ֧ים (women) נָכְרִיּ֛וֹת (foreign) רַבּ֖וֹת (many) וְאֶת־ (and as well as) בַּת־ (the daughter) פַּרְעֹ֑ה (of Pharaoh)— מוֹאֲבִיּ֤וֹת (Moabitesses), עַמֳּנִיּוֹת֙ (Ammonitesses), אֲדֹ֣מִיֹּ֔ת (Edomitesses), צֵדְנִיֹּ֖ת (Sidonianesses), חִתִּיֹּֽת׃ (and Hittitesses)— 2  מִן־ (from) הַגּוֹיִ֗ם (the nations) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (of whom) אָֽמַר־ (had said) יְהוָה֩ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) בְּנֵ֨י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל (of Israel), לֹֽא־ (Not) תָבֹ֣אוּ (You⁺ must enter) בָהֶ֗ם (into them) וְהֵם֙ (and they) לֹא־ (not) יָבֹ֣אוּ (must enter) בָכֶ֔ם (into you⁺); אָכֵן֙ (surely) יַטּ֣וּ (they will stretch away) אֶת־ (-) לְבַבְכֶ֔ם (your⁺ hearts) אַחֲרֵ֖י (after) אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֑ם (their gods). בָּהֶ֛ם (To these) דָּבַ֥ק (clung) שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה (Solomon) לְאַהֲבָֽה׃ (in love). 3  וַיְהִי־ (And there were) ל֣וֹ (unto him) נָשִׁ֗ים (wives), שָׂרוֹת֙ (princesses), שְׁבַ֣ע (seven) מֵא֔וֹת (hundred), וּפִֽלַגְשִׁ֖ים (and concubines) שְׁלֹ֣שׁ (three) מֵא֑וֹת (hundred). וַיַּטּ֥וּ (And stretched away) נָשָׁ֖יו (his wives) אֶת־ (-) לִבּֽוֹ׃ (his heart).

4  וַיְהִ֗י (And it was) לְעֵת֙ (at the time) זִקְנַ֣ת (of the old age) שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה (of Solomon) נָשָׁיו֙ (that his wives) הִטּ֣וּ (stretched) אֶת־ (-) לְבָב֔וֹ (his heart) אַחֲרֵ֖י (after) אֱלֹהִ֣ים (gods) אֲחֵרִ֑ים (other), וְלֹא־ (and not) הָיָ֨ה (was) לְבָב֤וֹ (his heart) שָׁלֵם֙ (loyal) עִם־ (to) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהָ֔יו (his God) כִּלְבַ֖ב (like the heart) דָּוִ֥יד (of David) אָבִֽיו׃ (his father). 5  וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ (And walked) שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה (Solomon) אַחֲרֵ֣י (after) עַשְׁתֹּ֔רֶת (Ashtoreth) אֱלֹהֵ֖י (the goddess) צִדֹנִ֑ים (of the Sidonians), וְאַחֲרֵ֣י (and after) מִלְכֹּ֔ם (Milcom) שִׁקֻּ֖ץ (the abomination) עַמֹּנִֽים׃ (of the Ammonites). 6  וַיַּ֧עַשׂ (And did) שְׁלֹמֹ֛ה (Solomon) הָרַ֖ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וְלֹ֥א (and he was not) מִלֵּ֛א (fully) אַחֲרֵ֥י (after) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) כְּדָוִ֥ד (like David) אָבִֽיו׃ס (his father).

7  אָז֩ (Then) יִבְנֶ֨ה (built) שְׁלֹמֹ֜ה (Solomon) בָּמָ֗ה (a high place) לִכְמוֹשׁ֙ (for Chemosh) שִׁקֻּ֣ץ (the abomination) מוֹאָ֔ב (of Moab), בָּהָ֕ר (on the hill) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that) עַל־ (is on) פְּנֵ֣י (the front) יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (of Jerusalem), וּלְמֹ֕לֶךְ (and for Molech) שִׁקֻּ֖ץ (the abomination) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) עַמּֽוֹן׃ (of Ammon). 8  וְכֵ֣ן (And likewise) עָשָׂ֔ה (he did) לְכָל־ (for all) נָשָׁ֖יו (his wives) הַנָּכְרִיּ֑וֹת (foreign), מַקְטִיר֥וֹת (who burned incense) וּֽמְזַבְּח֖וֹת (and sacrificed) לֵאלֹהֵיהֶֽן׃ (to their gods).

God’s Anger against Solomon

9  וַיִּתְאַנַּ֥ף (And became angry) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) בִּשְׁלֹמֹ֑ה (with Solomon) כִּֽי־ (because) נָטָ֣ה (had stretched) לְבָב֗וֹ (his heart) מֵעִ֤ם (from) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), הַנִּרְאָ֥ה (who had appeared) אֵלָ֖יו (to him) פַּעֲמָֽיִם׃ (twice). 10  וְצִוָּ֤ה (And He had commanded) אֵלָיו֙ (to him) עַל־ (concerning) הַדָּבָ֣ר (the thing) הַזֶּ֔ה (this) לְבִ֨לְתִּי־ (that not) לֶ֔כֶת (he should go) אַחֲרֵ֖י (after) אֱלֹהִ֣ים (gods) אֲחֵרִ֑ים (other). וְלֹ֣א (Not) שָׁמַ֔ר (he did keep) אֵ֥ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (what) צִוָּ֖ה (had commanded) יְהוָֽה׃פ (YHWH).

11  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) לִשְׁלֹמֹ֗ה (to Solomon), יַ֚עַן (Because) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) הָֽיְתָה־ (have done) זֹּ֣את (this) עִמָּ֔ךְ (you), וְלֹ֤א (and not) שָׁמַ֙רְתָּ֙ (have kept) בְּרִיתִ֣י (My covenant) וְחֻקֹּתַ֔י (and My statutes) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) צִוִּ֖יתִי (I have commanded) עָלֶ֑יךָ (you), קָרֹ֨עַ (tearing) אֶקְרַ֤ע (I will tear) אֶת־ (-) הַמַּמְלָכָה֙ (the kingdom) מֵֽעָלֶ֔יךָ (from you) וּנְתַתִּ֖יהָ (and give it) לְעַבְדֶּֽךָ׃ (to your servant). 12  אַךְ־ (Nevertheless) בְּיָמֶ֙יךָ֙ (in your days) לֹ֣א (not) אֶעֱשֶׂ֔נָּה (I will do it), לְמַ֖עַן (for the sake) דָּוִ֣ד (of David) אָבִ֑יךָ (your father). מִיַּ֥ד (From the hand) בִּנְךָ֖ (of your son) אֶקְרָעֶֽנָּה׃ (I will tear it). 13  רַ֤ק (However) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הַמַּמְלָכָה֙ (the kingdom) לֹ֣א (not) אֶקְרָ֔ע (I will tear away). שֵׁ֥בֶט (Tribe) אֶחָ֖ד (one) אֶתֵּ֣ן (I will give) לִבְנֶ֑ךָ (to your son) לְמַ֙עַן֙ (for the sake) דָּוִ֣ד (of David) עַבְדִּ֔י (my servant) וּלְמַ֥עַן (and for the sake) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (of Jerusalem) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which) בָּחָֽרְתִּי׃ (I have chosen).

Hadad’s Return

14  וַיָּ֨קֶם (And raised up) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) שָׂטָן֙ (an adversary) לִשְׁלֹמֹ֔ה (against Solomon), אֵ֖ת (-) הֲדַ֣ד (Hadad) הָאֲדֹמִ֑י (the Edomite); מִזֶּ֧רַע (from the seed) הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ (of the king) ה֖וּא (he was) בֶּאֱדֽוֹם׃ (in Edom).

15  וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass), בִּֽהְי֤וֹת (being) דָּוִד֙ (in David) אֶת־ (in) אֱד֔וֹם (Edom), בַּעֲל֗וֹת (in the going up) יוֹאָב֙ (of Joab) שַׂ֣ר (the commander) הַצָּבָ֔א (of the army) לְקַבֵּ֖ר (to bury) אֶת־ (-) הַחֲלָלִ֑ים (the slain), וַיַּ֥ךְ (and he had struck down) כָּל־ (every) זָכָ֖ר (male) בֶּאֱדֽוֹם׃ (in Edom)— 16  כִּ֣י (for) שֵׁ֧שֶׁת (six) חֳדָשִׁ֛ים (months) יָֽשַׁב־ (had remained) שָׁ֥ם (there) יוֹאָ֖ב (Joab) וְכָל־ (and all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel), עַד־ (until) הִכְרִ֥ית (he had cut off) כָּל־ (every) זָכָ֖ר (male) בֶּאֱדֽוֹם׃ (in Edom)— 17  וַיִּבְרַ֣ח (that fled) אֲדַ֡ד (Hadad), הוּא֩ (he) וַאֲנָשִׁ֨ים (and certain) אֲדֹמִיִּ֜ים (Edomites) מֵעַבְדֵ֥י (of the servants) אָבִ֛יו (of his father) אִתּ֖וֹ (with him), לָב֣וֹא (to go) מִצְרָ֑יִם (to Egypt). וַהֲדַ֖ד (And Hadad was) נַ֥עַר (a boy) קָטָֽן׃ (young).

18  וַיָּקֻ֙מוּ֙ (And they arose) מִמִּדְיָ֔ן (from Midian) וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ (and came) פָּארָ֑ן (to Paran). וַיִּקְחוּ֩ (And they took) אֲנָשִׁ֨ים (men) עִמָּ֜ם (with them) מִפָּארָ֗ן (from Paran) וַיָּבֹ֤אוּ (and came) מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ (to Egypt), אֶל־ (to) פַּרְעֹ֣ה (Pharaoh) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt). וַיִּתֶּן־ (And he gave) ל֣וֹ (to him) בַ֗יִת (a house), וְלֶ֙חֶם֙ (and food) אָ֣מַר (he ordered) ל֔וֹ (for him), וְאֶ֖רֶץ (and land) נָ֥תַן (gave) לֽוֹ׃ (to him).

19  וַיִּמְצָא֙ (And found) הֲדַ֥ד (Hadad) חֵ֛ן (favor) בְּעֵינֵ֥י (in the eyes) פַרְעֹ֖ה (of Pharaoh) מְאֹ֑ד (great), וַיִּתֶּן־ (so that he gave) ל֤וֹ (to him) אִשָּׁה֙ (as wife) אֶת־ (-) אֲח֣וֹת (the sister) אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ (of his own wife), אֲח֖וֹת (that is the sister) תַּחְפְּנֵ֥יס (of Tahpenes) הַגְּבִירָֽה׃ (Queen). 20  וַתֵּ֨לֶד (And bore) ל֜וֹ (to him) אֲח֣וֹת (the sister) תַּחְפְּנֵ֗יס (of Tahpenes) אֵ֚ת (-) גְּנֻבַ֣ת (Genubath) בְּנ֔וֹ (his son), וַתִּגְמְלֵ֣הוּ (and weaned him) תַחְפְּנֵ֔ס (Tahpenes) בְּת֖וֹךְ (in the midst) בֵּ֣ית (of the house) פַּרְעֹ֑ה (of Pharaoh); וַיְהִ֤י (and was) גְנֻבַת֙ (Genubath) בֵּ֣ית (in the house) פַּרְעֹ֔ה (of Pharaoh) בְּת֖וֹךְ (in the midst) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) פַרְעֹֽה׃ (of Pharaoh).

21  וַהֲדַ֞ד (And Hadad) שָׁמַ֣ע (heard) בְּמִצְרַ֗יִם (in Egypt) כִּֽי־ (that) שָׁכַ֤ב (had rested) דָּוִד֙ (David) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֔יו (his fathers), וְכִי־ (and that) מֵ֖ת (was dead) יוֹאָ֣ב (Joab) שַֽׂר־ (the commander) הַצָּבָ֑א (of the army). וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) הֲדַד֙ (Hadad) אֶל־ (to) פַּרְעֹ֔ה (Pharaoh), שַׁלְּחֵ֖נִי (Let me depart), וְאֵלֵ֥ךְ (that I may go) אֶל־ (to) אַרְצִֽי׃ (my own land).

22  וַיֹּ֧אמֶר (And said) ל֣וֹ (to him) פַרְעֹ֗ה (Pharaoh), כִּ֠י (But) מָה־ (what) אַתָּ֤ה (you) חָסֵר֙ (are lacking) עִמִּ֔י (with me), וְהִנְּךָ֥ (that suddenly) מְבַקֵּ֖שׁ (you seek) לָלֶ֣כֶת (to go) אֶל־ (to) אַרְצֶ֑ךָ (your own land)?

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר׀ (And he answered), לֹ֔א (Nothing), כִּ֥י (but) שַׁלֵּ֖חַ (sending) תְּשַׁלְּחֵֽנִי׃ (you must send me away).

Rezon’s Hostility

23  וַיָּ֨קֶם (And raised up) אֱלֹהִ֥ים (God) לוֹ֙ (against him) שָׂטָ֔ן (an adversary), אֶת־ (-) רְז֖וֹן (Rezon) בֶּן־ (son) אֶלְיָדָ֑ע (of Eliada), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) בָּרַ֗ח (had fled) מֵאֵ֛ת (from) הֲדַדְעֶ֥זֶר (Hadadezer) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) צוֹבָ֖ה (of Zobah) אֲדֹנָֽיו׃ (his lord). 24  וַיִּקְבֹּ֤ץ (And he gathered) עָלָיו֙ (to him) אֲנָשִׁ֔ים (men) וַיְהִ֣י (and became) שַׂר־ (captain) גְּד֔וּד (of a troop), בַּהֲרֹ֥ג (when killed) דָּוִ֖ד (David) אֹתָ֑ם (them); וַיֵּלְכ֤וּ (and they went) דַמֶּ֙שֶׂק֙ (to Damascus) וַיֵּ֣שְׁבוּ (and dwelt) בָ֔הּ (in it) וַֽיִּמְלְכ֖וּ (and they made him king) בְּדַמָּֽשֶׂק׃ (in Damascus).

25  וַיְהִ֨י (And He was) שָׂטָ֤ן (an adversary) לְיִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) כָּל־ (all) יְמֵ֣י (the days) שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה (of Solomon), וְאֶת־ (and besides) הָרָעָ֖ה (the trouble) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that was) הֲדָ֑ד (of Hadad). וַיָּ֙קָץ֙ (And he abhorred) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel) וַיִּמְלֹ֖ךְ (and reigned) עַל־ (over) אֲרָֽם׃פ (Aram).

Jeroboam’s Rebellion

26  וְיָרָבְעָם֩ (And Jeroboam) בֶּן־ (son) נְבָ֨ט (of Nebat) אֶפְרָתִ֜י (was an Ephraimite) מִן־ (from) הַצְּרֵדָ֗ה (Zereda)— וְשֵׁ֤ם (and the name) אִמּוֹ֙ (of his mother) צְרוּעָה֙ (was Zeruah), אִשָּׁ֣ה (a) אַלְמָנָ֔ה (widow), עֶ֖בֶד (a servant) לִשְׁלֹמֹ֑ה (of Solomon)— וַיָּ֥רֶם (and he lifted up) יָ֖ד (a hand) בַּמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (against the king). 27  וְזֶ֣ה (And this) הַדָּבָ֔ר (is the thing) אֲשֶׁר־ (for which) הֵרִ֥ים (he lifted up) יָ֖ד (a hand) בַּמֶּ֑לֶךְ (against the king):

שְׁלֹמֹה֙ (Solomon) בָּנָ֣ה (had built) אֶת־ (-) הַמִּלּ֔וֹא (the Millo), סָגַ֕ר (and he had closed up) אֶת־ (-) פֶּ֕רֶץ (the breach) עִ֖יר (of the city) דָּוִ֥ד (of David) אָבִֽיו׃ (his father). 28  וְהָאִ֥ישׁ (And the man) יָרָבְעָ֖ם (Jeroboam was) גִּבּ֣וֹר (mighty) חָ֑יִל (in valor). וַיַּ֨רְא (And saw) שְׁלֹמֹ֜ה (Solomon) אֶת־ (-) הַנַּ֗עַר (the young man), כִּֽי־ (that) עֹשֵׂ֤ה (was doing) מְלָאכָה֙ (business) ה֔וּא (he), וַיַּפְקֵ֣ד (and he appointed) אֹת֔וֹ (him) לְכָל־ (over all) סֵ֖בֶל (the forced labor) בֵּ֥ית (of the house) יוֹסֵֽף׃ס (of Joseph).

29  וַֽיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass) בָּעֵ֣ת (at the time) הַהִ֔יא (that), וְיָֽרָבְעָ֖ם (and Jeroboam) יָצָ֣א (went out) מִירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (of Jerusalem), וַיִּמְצָ֣א (that met) אֹת֡וֹ (him) אֲחִיָּה֩ (Ahijah) הַשִּׁילֹנִ֨י (the Shilonite) הַנָּבִ֜יא (the prophet) בַּדֶּ֗רֶךְ (on the way). וְה֤וּא (And he) מִתְכַּסֶּה֙ (had clothed himself) בְּשַׂלְמָ֣ה (with a garment) חֲדָשָׁ֔ה (new), וּשְׁנֵיהֶ֥ם (and the two were) לְבַדָּ֖ם (alone) בַּשָּׂדֶֽה׃ (in the field).

30  וַיִּתְפֹּ֣שׂ (And took hold) אֲחִיָּ֔ה (Ahijah) בַּשַּׂלְמָ֥ה (of the garment) הַחֲדָשָׁ֖ה (new) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that was) עָלָ֑יו (on him) וַיִּ֨קְרָעֶ֔הָ (and tore it) שְׁנֵ֥ים (into two) עָשָׂ֖ר (and ten) קְרָעִֽים׃ (pieces). 31  וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And he said) לְיָֽרָבְעָ֔ם (to Jeroboam), קַח־ (Take) לְךָ֖ (for yourself) עֲשָׂרָ֣ה (ten) קְרָעִ֑ים (pieces). כִּ֣י (For) כֹה֩ (thus) אָמַ֨ר (says) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH), אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel): הִנְנִ֨י (Behold) קֹרֵ֤עַ (I will tear) אֶת־ (-) הַמַּמְלָכָה֙ (the kingdom) מִיַּ֣ד (out of the hand) שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה (of Solomon), וְנָתַתִּ֣י (and will give) לְךָ֔ (to you) אֵ֖ת (-) עֲשָׂרָ֥ה (ten) הַשְּׁבָטִֽים׃ (tribes). 32  וְהַשֵּׁ֥בֶט (And tribe) הָאֶחָ֖ד (one) יִֽהְיֶה־ (shall have) לּ֑וֹ (he) לְמַ֣עַן׀ (for the sake) עַבְדִּ֣י (of My servant) דָוִ֗ד (David), וּלְמַ֙עַן֙ (and for the sake) יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (of Jerusalem) הָעִיר֙ (the city) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) בָּחַ֣רְתִּי (I have chosen) בָ֔הּ (out) מִכֹּ֖ל (of all) שִׁבְטֵ֥י (the tribes) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 33  יַ֣עַן׀ (Because) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עֲזָב֗וּנִי (they have forsaken Me) וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲווּ֮ (and worshiped) לְעַשְׁתֹּרֶת֮ (Ashtoreth) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the goddess) צִֽדֹנִין֒ (of the Sidonians), לִכְמוֹשׁ֙ (Chemosh) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the god) מוֹאָ֔ב (of the Moabites), וּלְמִלְכֹּ֖ם (and Milcom) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the god) בְנֵֽי־ (of the sons) עַמּ֑וֹן (of Ammon), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) הָלְכ֣וּ (have walked) בִדְרָכַ֗י (in My ways) לַעֲשׂ֨וֹת (to do) הַיָּשָׁ֧ר (right) בְּעֵינַ֛י (in My eyes), וְחֻקֹּתַ֥י (and My statutes) וּמִשְׁפָּטַ֖י (and My ordinances), כְּדָוִ֥ד (as David) אָבִֽיו׃ (his father did).

34  וְלֹֽא־ (And not) אֶקַּ֥ח (I will take) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הַמַּמְלָכָ֖ה (the kingdom) מִיָּד֑וֹ (out of his hand), כִּ֣י׀ (because) נָשִׂ֣יא (ruler) אֲשִׁתֶ֗נּוּ (I have made him) כֹּ֚ל (all) יְמֵ֣י (the days) חַיָּ֔יו (of his life) לְמַ֨עַן (for the sake) דָּוִ֤ד (of David) עַבְדִּי֙ (My servant), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (whom) בָּחַ֣רְתִּי (I chose) אֹת֔וֹ (-) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (because) שָׁמַ֖ר (he kept) מִצְוֺתַ֥י (My commandments) וְחֻקֹּתָֽי׃ (and My statutes); 35  וְלָקַחְתִּ֥י (and I will take) הַמְּלוּכָ֖ה (the kingdom) מִיַּ֣ד (out of the hand) בְּנ֑וֹ (of his son) וּנְתַתִּ֣יהָ (and give it) לְּךָ֔ (to you)— אֵ֖ת (-) עֲשֶׂ֥רֶת (ten) הַשְּׁבָטִֽים׃ (tribes). 36  וְלִבְנ֖וֹ (And to his son) אֶתֵּ֣ן (I will give) שֵֽׁבֶט־ (tribe) אֶחָ֑ד (one), לְמַ֣עַן (that there) הֱיֽוֹת־ (may be) נִ֣יר (a lamp) לְדָֽוִיד־ (to David) עַ֠בְדִּי (My servant) כָּֽל־ (all) הַיָּמִ֤ים׀ (the days) לְפָנַי֙ (before Me) בִּיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (in Jerusalem), הָעִיר֙ (the city) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) בָּחַ֣רְתִּי (I have chosen) לִ֔י (for Myself) לָשׂ֥וּם (to put) שְׁמִ֖י (My name) שָֽׁם׃ (there). 37  וְאֹתְךָ֣ (And you) אֶקַּ֔ח (I will take), וּמָ֣לַכְתָּ֔ (and you shall reign) בְּכֹ֥ל (over all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) תְּאַוֶּ֖ה (desires), נַפְשֶׁ֑ךָ (your heart), וְהָיִ֥יתָ (and you shall be) מֶּ֖לֶךְ (king) עַל־ (over) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (Israel).

38  וְהָיָ֗ה (And it shall be), אִם־ (if) תִּשְׁמַע֮ (you heed) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) אֲצַוֶּךָ֒ (I command you), וְהָלַכְתָּ֣ (and walk) בִדְרָכַ֗י (in My ways), וְעָשִׂ֨יתָ (and do) הַיָּשָׁ֤ר (right) בְּעֵינַי֙ (in My eyes), לִשְׁמ֤וֹר (to keep) חֻקּוֹתַי֙ (My statutes) וּמִצְוֺתַ֔י (and My commandments) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) עָשָׂ֖ה (did) דָּוִ֣ד (David) עַבְדִּ֑י (My servant), וְהָיִ֣יתִי (and I will be) עִמָּ֗ךְ (with you) וּבָנִ֨יתִי (and I will build) לְךָ֤ (for you) בַֽיִת־ (a house) נֶאֱמָן֙ (enduring), כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (as) בָּנִ֣יתִי (I built) לְדָוִ֔ד (for David), וְנָתַתִּ֥י (and I will give) לְךָ֖ (to you) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (Israel). 39  וַֽאעַנֶּ֛ה (And I will afflict) אֶת־ (-) זֶ֥רַע (the seed) דָּוִ֖ד (of David) לְמַ֣עַן (on account) זֹ֑את (of this), אַ֖ךְ (but) לֹ֥א (not) כָל־ (all) הַיָּמִֽים׃ס (the days).

40  וַיְבַקֵּ֥שׁ (And sought) שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה (Solomon) לְהָמִ֣ית (to kill) אֶת־ (-) יָרָבְעָ֑ם (Jeroboam). וַיָּ֣קָם (And arose) יָרָבְעָ֗ם (Jeroboam) וַיִּבְרַ֤ח (and fled) מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ (to Egypt), אֶל־ (to) שִׁישַׁ֣ק (Shishak) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt), וַיְהִ֥י (and he was) בְמִצְרַ֖יִם (in Egypt) עַד־ (until) מ֥וֹת (the death) שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ (of Solomon).

The Death of Solomon

41  וְיֶ֨תֶר (And the rest) דִּבְרֵ֧י (of the acts) שְׁלֹמֹ֛ה (of Solomon), וְכָל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) עָשָׂ֖ה (he did), וְחָכְמָת֑וֹ (and his wisdom), הֲלֽוֹא־ (are not) הֵ֣ם (they) כְּתֻבִ֔ים (written) עַל־ (in) סֵ֖פֶר (the Book) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the Acts) שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ (of Solomon)? 42  וְהַיָּמִ֗ים (And the days) אֲשֶׁר֩ (that) מָלַ֨ךְ (reigned) שְׁלֹמֹ֤ה (Solomon) בִירוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ (in Jerusalem) עַל־ (over) כָּל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel) אַרְבָּעִ֖ים (were forty) שָׁנָֽה׃ (years).

43  וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב (And rested) שְׁלֹמֹה֙ (Solomon) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֔יו (his fathers) וַיִּ֨קָּבֵ֔ר (and was buried) בְּעִ֖יר (in the City) דָּוִ֣ד (of David) אָבִ֑יו (his father). וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ (And reigned) רְחַבְעָ֥ם (Rehoboam) בְּנ֖וֹ (his son) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃ס (in his place).
