The Queen of Sheba
(1 Kings 10:1–13)

1  וּמַֽלְכַּת־ (And the queen) שְׁבָ֗א (of Sheba) שָֽׁמְעָה֮ (heard) אֶת־ (about) שֵׁ֣מַע (the report) שְׁלֹמֹה֒ (of Solomon), וַתָּב֣וֹא (and she came) לְנַסּוֹת֩ (to test) אֶת־ (-) שְׁלֹמֹ֨ה (Solomon) בְחִיד֜וֹת (with difficult questions) בִּירֽוּשָׁלִַ֗ם (to Jerusalem), בְּחַ֣יִל (with a company) כָּבֵ֣ד (great) מְאֹ֡ד (very), וּ֠גְמַלִּים (and camels) נֹשְׂאִ֨ים (bearing) בְּשָׂמִ֧ים (spices), וְזָהָ֛ב (and gold) לָרֹ֖ב (in abundance), וְאֶ֣בֶן (and stones) יְקָרָ֑ה (precious).

וַתָּבוֹא֙ (And she came) אֶל־ (to) שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה (Solomon), וַתְּדַבֵּ֣ר (and she spoke) עִמּ֔וֹ (with him) אֵ֛ת (-) כָּל־ (about all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) הָיָ֖ה (was) עִם־ (in) לְבָבָֽהּ׃ (her heart). 2  וַיַּגֶּד־ (And declared) לָ֥הּ (to her) שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה (Solomon) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) דְּבָרֶ֑יהָ (her questions), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) נֶעְלַ֤ם (was concealed) דָּבָר֙ (a thing) מִשְּׁלֹמֹ֔ה (from Solomon) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (that) לֹ֦א (not) הִגִּ֖יד (he could explain it) לָֽהּ׃ (to her).

3  וַתֵּ֙רֶא֙ (And had seen) מַֽלְכַּת־ (the queen) שְׁבָ֔א (of Sheba) אֵ֖ת (-) חָכְמַ֣ת (the wisdom) שְׁלֹמֹ֑ה (of Solomon), וְהַבַּ֖יִת (and the house) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) בָּנָֽה׃ (he had built), 4  וּמַאֲכַ֣ל (and the food) שֻׁלְחָנ֡וֹ (of his table), וּמוֹשַׁ֣ב (and the seating) עֲבָדָיו֩ (of his servants), וּמַעֲמַ֨ד (and the service) מְשָׁרְתָ֜יו (of his ministers), וּמַלְבּֽוּשֵׁיהֶ֗ם (and their apparel), וּמַשְׁקָיו֙ (and his cupbearers) וּמַלְבּ֣וּשֵׁיהֶ֔ם (and their apparel), וַעֲלִיָּת֔וֹ (and his stairway) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (by which) יַעֲלֶ֖ה (he went up) בֵּ֣ית (to the house) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH); וְלֹא־ (and not) הָ֥יָה (there was) ע֛וֹד (anymore) בָּ֖הּ (in her) רֽוּחַ׃ (breath).

5  וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And she said) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king), אֱמֶת֙ (True) הַדָּבָ֔ר (is the word) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) שָׁמַ֖עְתִּי (I heard) בְּאַרְצִ֑י (in my land) עַל־ (about) דְּבָרֶ֖יךָ (your words) וְעַל־ (and) חָכְמָתֶֽךָ׃ (your wisdom), 6  וְלֹֽא־ (not) הֶאֱמַ֣נְתִּי (I did believe) לְדִבְרֵיהֶ֗ם (their words) עַ֤ד (until) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) בָּ֙אתִי֙ (I came) וַתִּרְאֶ֣ינָה (and saw) עֵינַ֔י (with my own eyes). וְהִנֵּה֙ (And behold), לֹ֣א (not) הֻגַּד־ (was told) לִ֔י (to me) חֲצִ֖י (the half) מַרְבִּ֣ית (of the greatness) חָכְמָתֶ֑ךָ (of your wisdom)! יָסַ֕פְתָּ (You have added) עַל־ (to) הַשְּׁמוּעָ֖ה (the report) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) שָׁמָֽעְתִּי׃ (I heard). 7  אַשְׁרֵ֣י (How blessed are) אֲנָשֶׁ֔יךָ (your men)! וְאַשְׁרֵ֖י (And How blessed are) עֲבָדֶ֣יךָ (your servants), אֵ֑לֶּה (these) הָעֹמְדִ֤ים (who stand) לְפָנֶ֙יךָ֙ (before you) תָּמִ֔יד (continually) וְשֹׁמְעִ֖ים (and hear) אֶת־ (-) חָכְמָתֶֽךָ׃ (your wisdom)! 8  יְהִ֨י (Be) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ (your God) בָּר֔וּךְ (blessed), אֲשֶׁ֣ר׀ (who) חָפֵ֣ץ (delighted) בְּךָ֗ (in you) לְתִתְּךָ֤ (to set you) עַל־ (on) כִּסְאוֹ֙ (His throne) לְמֶ֔לֶךְ (as king) לַיהוָ֖ה (for YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ (your God). בְּאַהֲבַ֨ת (Because has loved) אֱלֹהֶ֤יךָ (your God) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel) לְהַעֲמִיד֣וֹ (to establish them) לְעוֹלָ֔ם (forever), וַיִּתֶּנְךָ֤ (therefore He made you) עֲלֵיהֶם֙ (over them) לְמֶ֔לֶךְ (king) לַעֲשׂ֖וֹת (to do) מִשְׁפָּ֥ט (justice) וּצְדָקָֽה׃ (and righteousness).

9  וַתִּתֵּ֨ן (And she gave) לַמֶּ֜לֶךְ (the king) מֵאָ֥ה (a hundred) וְעֶשְׂרִ֣ים׀ (and twenty) כִּכַּ֣ר (talents) זָהָ֗ב (of gold), וּבְשָׂמִ֛ים (and spices) לָרֹ֥ב (in abundance) מְאֹ֖ד (great), וְאֶ֣בֶן (and stones) יְקָרָ֑ה (precious). וְלֹ֤א (And not) הָיָה֙ (there were) כַּבֹּ֣שֶׂם (spices) הַה֔וּא (such as) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) נָתְנָ֥ה (gave) מַֽלְכַּת־ (the queen) שְׁבָ֖א (of Sheba) לַמֶּ֥לֶךְ (to King) שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ (Solomon).

10  וְגַם־ (And) עַבְדֵ֤י (the servants) חִירָם (Huram) וְעַבְדֵ֣י (and the servants) שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה (of Solomon) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) הֵבִ֥יאוּ (brought) זָהָ֖ב (gold) מֵאוֹפִ֑יר (from Ophir) הֵבִ֛יאוּ (brought) עֲצֵ֥י (wood) אַלְגּוּמִּ֖ים (algum) וְאֶ֥בֶן (and stones) יְקָרָֽה׃ (precious). 11  וַיַּ֣עַשׂ (And made) הַ֠מֶּלֶךְ (the king) אֶת־ (-) עֲצֵ֨י (of wood) הָֽאַלְגּוּמִּ֜ים (the algum) מְסִלּ֤וֹת (steps) לְבֵית־ (for the house) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) וּלְבֵ֣ית (and for house), הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (of the king) וְכִנֹּר֥וֹת (and lyres) וּנְבָלִ֖ים (and harps) לַשָּׁרִ֑ים (for the singers); וְלֹא־ (and not) נִרְא֥וּ (had been seen) כָהֵ֛ם (like these) לְפָנִ֖ים (before) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah).

12  וְהַמֶּ֨לֶךְ (And King) שְׁלֹמֹ֜ה (Solomon) נָתַ֣ן (gave) לְמַֽלְכַּת־ (to the queen) שְׁבָ֗א (of Sheba) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) חֶפְצָהּ֙ (her desire), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (whatever) שָׁאָ֔לָה (she asked), מִלְּבַ֖ד (apart from) אֲשֶׁר־ (that which) הֵבִ֣יאָה (she had brought) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (the king). וַֽתַּהֲפֹ֛ךְ (And she turned) וַתֵּ֥לֶךְ (and went) לְאַרְצָ֖הּ (to her own country), הִ֥יא (she) וַעֲבָדֶֽיהָ׃פ (and her servants).

Solomon’s Wealth and Splendor
(1 Kings 10:14–29)

13  וַיְהִי֙ (And was) מִשְׁקַ֣ל (the weight) הַזָּהָ֔ב (of the gold) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) בָּ֥א (came) לִשְׁלֹמֹ֖ה (to Solomon) בְּשָׁנָ֣ה (in year) אֶחָ֑ת (one) שֵׁ֥שׁ (six) מֵא֛וֹת (hundred) וְשִׁשִּׁ֥ים (and sixty) וָשֵׁ֖שׁ (and six) כִּכְּרֵ֥י (talents) זָהָֽב׃ (of gold), 14  לְבַ֞ד (apart from what) מֵאַנְשֵׁ֧י (the men) הַתָּרִ֛ים (the travelers) וְהַסֹּחֲרִ֖ים (and the merchants) מְבִיאִ֑ים (brought). וְכָל־ (And all) מַלְכֵ֤י (the kings) עֲרַב֙ (of Arabia) וּפַח֣וֹת (and governors) הָאָ֔רֶץ (of the country) מְבִיאִ֛ים (brought) זָהָ֥ב (gold) וָכֶ֖סֶף (and silver) לִשְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ (to Solomon).

15  וַיַּ֨עַשׂ (And made) הַמֶּ֧לֶךְ (King) שְׁלֹמֹ֛ה (Solomon) מָאתַ֥יִם (two hundred) צִנָּ֖ה (large shields) זָהָ֣ב (of gold) שָׁח֑וּט (hammered) שֵׁ֤שׁ (six) מֵאוֹת֙ (hundred) זָהָ֣ב (shekels of gold) שָׁח֔וּט (hammered) יַעֲלֶ֖ה (went) עַל־ (into) הַצִּנָּ֥ה (shield) הָאֶחָֽת׃ (one)) 16  וּשְׁלֹשׁ־ (and three) מֵא֤וֹת (hundred) מָֽגִנִּים֙ (shields) זָהָ֣ב (of gold) שָׁח֔וּט (hammered) שְׁלֹ֤שׁ (three) מֵאוֹת֙ (hundred) זָהָ֔ב (shekels of gold) יַעֲלֶ֖ה (went) עַל־ (into) הַמָּגֵ֣ן (shield) הָאֶחָ֑ת (one)). וַיִּתְּנֵ֣ם (And put them) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king) בְּבֵ֖ית (in the House) יַ֥עַר (of the Forest) הַלְּבָנֽוֹן׃פ (of Lebanon).

17  וַיַּ֧עַשׂ (And made) הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ (the king) כִּסֵּא־ (a throne) שֵׁ֖ן (of ivory) גָּד֑וֹל (great), וַיְצַפֵּ֖הוּ (and overlaid it) זָהָ֥ב (with gold) טָהֽוֹר׃ (pure). 18  וְשֵׁ֣שׁ (And six) מַעֲל֣וֹת (steps) לַ֠כִּסֵּא (were to the throne), וְכֶ֨בֶשׁ (and a footstool) בַּזָּהָ֤ב (of gold) לַכִּסֵּא֙ (to the throne), מָאֳחָזִ֔ים (fastened), וְיָד֛וֹת (and hands) מִזֶּ֥ה (on this side) וּמִזֶּ֖ה (and on this) עַל־ (of) מְק֣וֹם (the place) הַשָּׁ֑בֶת (of the seat), וּשְׁנַ֣יִם (and two) אֲרָי֔וֹת (lions) עֹמְדִ֖ים (stood) אֵ֥צֶל (beside) הַיָּדֽוֹת׃ (the armrests). 19  וּשְׁנֵ֧ים (And two) עָשָׂ֣ר (and ten) אֲרָי֗וֹת (lions) עֹמְדִ֥ים (stood) שָׁ֛ם (there) עַל־ (non) שֵׁ֥שׁ (six) הַֽמַּעֲל֖וֹת (the steps) מִזֶּ֣ה (on this side) וּמִזֶּ֑ה (and on this). לֹא־ (Nothing) נַעֲשָׂ֥ה (had been made) כֵ֖ן (thus) לְכָל־ (for any) מַמְלָכָֽה׃ (kingdom).

20  וְ֠כֹל (And all) כְּלֵ֞י (vessels) מַשְׁקֵ֨ה (drinking) הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ (of King) שְׁלֹמֹה֙ (Solomon) זָהָ֔ב (gold), וְכֹ֗ל (and all) כְּלֵ֛י (the vessels) בֵּֽית־ (of the House) יַ֥עַר (of the Forest) הַלְּבָנ֖וֹן (of Lebanon) זָהָ֣ב (gold) סָג֑וּר (pure). אֵ֣ין (Not) כֶּ֗סֶף (silver) נֶחְשָׁ֛ב (was accounted) בִּימֵ֥י (in the days) שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה (of Solomon) לִמְאֽוּמָה׃ (for anything). 21  כִּֽי־ (For) אֳנִיּ֤וֹת (ships) לַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (of the king) הֹלְכ֣וֹת (went) תַּרְשִׁ֔ישׁ (to Tarshish) עִ֖ם (with) עַבְדֵ֣י (the servants) חוּרָ֑ם (of Huram); אַחַת֩ (once) לְשָׁל֨וֹשׁ (in three) שָׁנִ֜ים (years) תָּב֣וֹאנָה׀ (came) אֳנִיּ֣וֹת (the ships) תַּרְשִׁ֗ישׁ (of Tarshish) נֹֽשְׂאוֹת֙ (bringing) זָהָ֣ב (gold), וָכֶ֔סֶף (and silver), שֶׁנְהַבִּ֥ים (ivory), וְקוֹפִ֖ים (and apes), וְתוּכִּיִּֽים׃פ (and peacocks).

22  וַיִּגְדַּל֙ (And surpassed) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (King) שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה (Solomon) מִכֹּ֖ל (all) מַלְכֵ֣י (the kings) הָאָ֑רֶץ (of the earth) לְעֹ֖שֶׁר (in riches) וְחָכְמָֽה׃ (and wisdom). 23  וְכֹל֙ (And all) מַלְכֵ֣י (the kings) הָאָ֔רֶץ (of the earth) מְבַקְשִׁ֖ים (sought) אֶת־ (-) פְּנֵ֣י (the presence) שְׁלֹמֹ֑ה (of Solomon), לִשְׁמֹ֙עַ֙ (to hear) אֶת־ (-) חָכְמָת֔וֹ (his wisdom) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) נָתַ֥ן (had put) הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) בְּלִבּֽוֹ׃ (in his heart). 24  וְהֵ֣ם (And they) מְבִיאִ֣ים (brought) אִ֣ישׁ (each man) מִנְחָת֡וֹ (his present), כְּלֵ֣י (articles) כֶסֶף֩ (of silver), וּכְלֵ֨י (and articles) זָהָ֤ב (gold), וּשְׂלָמוֹת֙ (and garments), נֵ֣שֶׁק (armor) וּבְשָׂמִ֔ים (and spices), סוּסִ֖ים (horses) וּפְרָדִ֑ים (and mules), דְּבַר־ (a matter) שָׁנָ֖ה (of year) בְּשָׁנָֽה׃פ (by year).

25  וַיְהִ֨י (And there were) לִשְׁלֹמֹ֜ה (unto Solomon) אַרְבַּעַת֩ (four) אֲלָפִ֨ים (thousand) אֻֽרְי֤וֹת (stalls for) סוּסִים֙ (horses) וּמַרְכָּב֔וֹת (and chariots), וּשְׁנֵים־ (and two) עָשָׂ֥ר (and ten) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) פָּרָשִׁ֑ים (horses); וַיַּנִּיחֵם֙ (and he stationed them) בְּעָרֵ֣י (in cities) הָרֶ֔כֶב (of the chariot) וְעִם־ (and with) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (at Jerusalem). 26  וַיְהִ֥י (And) מוֹשֵׁ֖ל (he reigned) בְּכָל־ (over all) הַמְּלָכִ֑ים (the kings) מִן־ (from) הַנָּהָר֙ (the River) וְעַד־ (even to) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (of the Philistines), וְעַ֖ד (and as far as) גְּב֥וּל (the border) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt). 27  וַיִּתֵּ֨ן (And made) הַמֶּ֧לֶךְ (the king) אֶת־ (-) הַכֶּ֛סֶף (the silver) בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (in Jerusalem) כָּאֲבָנִ֑ים (as stones), וְאֵ֣ת (and) הָאֲרָזִ֗ים (cedar trees) נָתַ֛ן (he made) כַּשִּׁקְמִ֥ים (as the sycamores) אֲשֶׁר־ (that are) בַּשְּׁפֵלָ֖ה (in the Shephelah) לָרֹֽב׃ (as abundant). 28  וּמוֹצִיאִ֨ים (And they brought) סוּסִ֧ים (horses) מִמִּצְרַ֛יִם (from Egypt) לִשְׁלֹמֹ֖ה (to Solomon) וּמִכָּל־ (and from all) הָאֲרָצֽוֹת׃ (the lands).

The Death of Solomon
(1 Kings 11:41–43)

29  וּשְׁאָר֙ (And the rest) דִּבְרֵ֣י (of the acts) שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה (of Solomon), הָרִאשֹׁנִ֖ים (the first) וְהָאֲחֲרוֹנִ֑ים (and the last), הֲלֹא־ (are not) הֵ֣ם (they) כְּתוּבִ֗ים (written) עַל־ (in) דִּבְרֵי֙ (the Words) נָתָ֣ן (of Nathan) הַנָּבִ֔יא (the Prophet), וְעַל־ (and in) נְבוּאַ֞ת (the Prophecy) אֲחִיָּ֣ה (of Ahijah) הַשִּֽׁילוֹנִ֗י (the Shilonite), וּבַחֲזוֹת֙ (and in the Visions) יֶעְדִּי (of Iddo) הַחֹזֶ֔ה (the Seer) עַל־ (concerning) יָרָבְעָ֖ם (Jeroboam) בֶּן־ (son) נְבָֽט׃ (of Nebat)? 30  וַיִּמְלֹ֨ךְ (And reigned) שְׁלֹמֹ֧ה (Solomon) בִֽירוּשָׁלִַ֛ם (in Jerusalem) עַל־ (over) כָּל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) אַרְבָּעִ֥ים (forty) שָׁנָֽה׃ (years). 31  וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב (And rested) שְׁלֹמֹה֙ (Solomon) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֔יו (his fathers), וַֽיִּקְבְּרֻ֔הוּ (and they buried him) בְּעִ֖יר (in the City) דָּוִ֣יד (of David) אָבִ֑יו (his father). וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ (And reigned) רְחַבְעָ֥ם (Rehoboam) בְּנ֖וֹ (his son) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃פ (in his place).
