Solomon’s Additional Achievements
(1 Kings 9:10–28)

1  וַיְהִ֞י (And it came to pass) מִקֵּ֣ץ׀ (at the end) עֶשְׂרִ֣ים (of twenty) שָׁנָ֗ה (years), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (in which) בָּנָ֧ה (had built) שְׁלֹמֹ֛ה (Solomon) אֶת־ (-) בֵּ֥ית (the house) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) וְאֶת־ (and) בֵּיתֽוֹ׃ (his own house), 2  וְהֶעָרִ֗ים (that the cities) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) נָתַ֤ן (had given) חוּרָם֙ (Huram) לִשְׁלֹמֹ֔ה (to Solomon), בָּנָ֥ה (built) שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה (Solomon) אֹתָ֑ם (them), וַיּ֥וֹשֶׁב (and he settled) שָׁ֖ם (there) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

3  וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ (And went) שְׁלֹמֹה֙ (Solomon) חֲמָ֣ת (to Hamath-) צוֹבָ֔ה (zobah) וַיֶּחֱזַ֖ק (and seized) עָלֶֽיהָ׃ (it). 4  וַיִּ֥בֶן (And He built) אֶת־ (-) תַּדְמֹ֖ר (Tadmor) בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר (in the wilderness), וְאֵת֙ (and) כָּל־ (all) עָרֵ֣י (cities) הַֽמִּסְכְּנ֔וֹת (the storage) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) בָּנָ֖ה (he built) בַּחֲמָֽת׃ (in Hamath). 5  וַיִּ֜בֶן (And He built) אֶת־ (-) בֵּ֤ית (Beth-) חוֹרוֹן֙ (horon) הָֽעֶלְי֔וֹן (Upper), וְאֶת־ (and) בֵּ֥ית (Beth-) חוֹר֖וֹן (horon) הַתַּחְתּ֑וֹן (Lower), עָרֵ֣י (cities) מָצ֔וֹר (fortified) חוֹמ֖וֹת (with walls), דְּלָתַ֥יִם (gates), וּבְרִֽיחַ׃ (and bars), 6  וְאֶֽת־ (and) בַּעֲלָ֗ת (Baalath) וְאֵ֨ת (and) כָּל־ (all) עָרֵ֤י (cities) הַֽמִּסְכְּנוֹת֙ (the storage) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) הָי֣וּ (were) לִשְׁלֹמֹ֔ה (unto Solomon), וְאֵת֙ (and) כָּל־ (all) עָרֵ֣י (cities) הָרֶ֔כֶב (the chariot), וְאֵ֖ת (and) עָרֵ֣י (the cities) הַפָּרָשִׁ֑ים (of the horsemen), וְאֵ֣ת׀ (and) כָּל־ (all) חֵ֣שֶׁק (the desire) שְׁלֹמֹ֗ה (of Solomon) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) חָשַׁק֙ (he desired) לִבְנ֤וֹת (to build) בִּירֽוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ (in Jerusalem) וּבַלְּבָנ֔וֹן (and in Lebanon) וּבְכֹ֖ל (and in all) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) מֶמְשַׁלְתּֽוֹ׃ (of his dominion).

7  כָּל־ (All) הָ֠עָם (the people) הַנּוֹתָ֨ר (remaining) מִן־ (of) הַחִתִּ֜י (the Hittite), וְהָאֱמֹרִ֤י (and the Amorite), וְהַפְּרִזִּי֙ (and the Perizzite), וְהַחִוִּ֣י (and the Hivite), וְהַיְבוּסִ֔י (and the Jebusite) אֲשֶׁ֛ר (who) לֹ֥א (not) מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) הֵֽמָּה׃ (they were)— 8  מִן־ (-) בְּנֵיהֶ֗ם (of their sons) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (who) נוֹתְר֤וּ (were left) אַחֲרֵיהֶם֙ (after them) בָּאָ֔רֶץ (in the land), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) לֹֽא־ (not) כִלּ֖וּם (did destroy) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel)) וַיַּעֲלֵ֤ם (and lifted up) שְׁלֹמֹה֙ (Solomon) לְמַ֔ס (as forced labor) עַ֖ד (to) הַיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

9  וּמִן־ (And) בְּנֵי֙ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) אֲ֠שֶׁר (which) לֹא־ (not) נָתַ֧ן (did make) שְׁלֹמֹ֛ה (Solomon) לַעֲבָדִ֖ים (servants) לִמְלַאכְתּ֑וֹ (for his work), כִּי־ (for) הֵ֜מָּה (they) אַנְשֵׁ֤י (men) מִלְחָמָה֙ (of war), וְשָׂרֵ֣י (and captains) שָׁלִישָׁ֔יו (of his officers), וְשָׂרֵ֥י (and captains) רִכְבּ֖וֹ (of his chariots) וּפָרָשָֽׁיו׃פ (and his cavalry). 10  וְאֵ֨לֶּה (And these) שָׂרֵ֤י (were chiefs) הַנְּצִיבִים (of the officers) אֲשֶׁר־ (who were) לַמֶּ֥לֶךְ (of King) שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה (Solomon), חֲמִשִּׁ֣ים (fifty) וּמָאתָ֑יִם (and two hundred) הָרֹדִ֖ים (ruling) בָּעָֽם׃ (over the people).

11  וְאֶת־ (And) בַּת־ (the daughter) פַּרְעֹ֗ה (of Pharaoh) הֶעֱלָ֤ה (brought up) שְׁלֹמֹה֙ (Solomon) מֵעִ֣יר (from the City) דָּוִ֔יד (of David) לַבַּ֖יִת (to the house) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) בָּֽנָה־ (he had built) לָ֑הּ (for her). כִּ֣י (For) אָמַ֗ר (he said), לֹא־ (Not) תֵשֵׁ֨ב (shall dwell) אִשָּׁ֥ה (wife) לִי֙ (to me) בְּבֵית֙ (in the house) דָּוִ֣יד (of David) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), כִּי־ (because) קֹ֣דֶשׁ (holy) הֵ֔מָּה (they are) אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) בָּֽאָ֥ה (has come) אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם (to) אֲר֥וֹן (the ark) יְהוָֽה׃פ (of YHWH).

12  אָ֣ז (Then) הֶעֱלָ֧ה (offered) שְׁלֹמֹ֛ה (Solomon) עֹל֖וֹת (burnt offerings) לַיהוָ֑ה (to YHWH) עַ֚ל (on) מִזְבַּ֣ח (the altar) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which) בָּנָ֖ה (he had built) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) הָאוּלָֽם׃ (the portico), 13  וּבִדְבַר־ (and by the matter) י֣וֹם (of a day) בְּי֗וֹם (in its day), לְהַעֲלוֹת֙ (to cause to ascend) כְּמִצְוַ֣ת (according to the commandment) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (of Moses) לַשַּׁבָּתוֹת֙ (for the Sabbaths), וְלֶ֣חֳדָשִׁ֔ים (and for the New Moons), וְלַמּ֣וֹעֲד֔וֹת (and for the appointed times) שָׁל֥וֹשׁ (three) פְּעָמִ֖ים (times) בַּשָּׁנָ֑ה (in the year)— בְּחַ֧ג (at the Feast) הַמַּצּ֛וֹת (of the Unleavened), וּבְחַ֥ג (and at the Feast) הַשָּׁבֻע֖וֹת (of the Weeks), וּבְחַ֥ג (and at the Feast) הַסֻּכּֽוֹת׃ (of the Booths).

14  וַיַּעֲמֵ֣ד (And he appointed), כְּמִשְׁפַּ֣ט (according to the judgment) דָּֽוִיד־ (of David) אָ֠בִיו (his father), אֶת־ (-) מַחְלְק֨וֹת (the divisions) הַכֹּהֲנִ֜ים (of the priests) עַל־ (for) עֲבֹדָתָ֗ם (their service), וְהַלְוִיִּ֣ם (and the Levites) עַל־ (for) מִ֠שְׁמְרוֹתָם (their duties), לְהַלֵּ֨ל (to praise) וּלְשָׁרֵ֜ת (and serve) נֶ֤גֶד (before) הַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ (the priests), לִדְבַר־ (according to the matter) י֣וֹם (of a day) בְּיוֹמ֔וֹ (in its day), וְהַשּׁוֹעֲרִ֥ים (and the gatekeepers) בְּמַחְלְקוֹתָ֖ם (by their divisions) לְשַׁ֣עַר (at gate) וָשָׁ֑עַר (and gate); כִּ֣י (for) כֵ֔ן (thus) מִצְוַ֖ת (had commanded) דָּוִ֥יד (David) אִישׁ־ (the man) הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ (of God). 15  וְלֹ֣א (And not) סָרוּ֩ (they did depart) מִצְוַ֨ת (from the command) הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ (of the king) עַל־ (concerning) הַכֹּהֲנִ֧ים (the priests) וְהַלְוִיִּ֛ם (and the Levites) לְכָל־ (concerning any) דָּבָ֖ר (matter), וְלָאֹצָרֽוֹת׃ (or concerning the treasuries).

16  וַתִּכֹּן֙ (And was prepared) כָּל־ (all) מְלֶ֣אכֶת (the work) שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה (of Solomon) עַד־ (from) הַיּ֛וֹם (the day) מוּסַ֥ד (of the foundation) בֵּית־ (of the house) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH), וְעַד־ (and until) כְּלֹת֑וֹ (it was finished). שָׁלֵ֖ם (And was completed) בֵּ֥ית (the house) יְהוָֽה׃ס (of YHWH).

17  אָז֩ (Then) הָלַ֨ךְ (went) שְׁלֹמֹ֜ה (Solomon) לְעֶצְיֽוֹן־ (to Ezion-) גֶּ֧בֶר (geber) וְאֶל־ (and to) אֵיל֛וֹת (Eloth) עַל־ (on) שְׂפַ֥ת (the lip) הַיָּ֖ם (of the sea) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) אֱדֽוֹם׃ (of Edom). 18  וַיִּֽשְׁלַֽח־ (And sent) לוֹ֩ (him) חוּרָ֨ם (Huram) בְּיַד־ (by the hand) עֲבָדָ֜יו (of his servants) אוֹנִיּוֹת (ships), וַעֲבָדִים֮ (and servants) י֣וֹדְעֵי (who knew) יָם֒ (the sea), וַיָּבֹ֜אוּ (and they went) עִם־ (with) עַבְדֵ֤י (the servants) שְׁלֹמֹה֙ (of Solomon) אוֹפִ֔ירָה (to Ophir) וַיִּקְח֣וּ (and acquired) מִשָּׁ֔ם (from there) אַרְבַּע־ (four) מֵא֥וֹת (hundred) וַחֲמִשִּׁ֖ים (and fifty) כִּכַּ֣ר (talents) זָהָ֑ב (of gold) וַיָּבִ֖יאוּ (and brought it) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ (King) שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃פ (Solomon).
