Our Help Is in the Name of the LORD

A song of ascents.

Psalm 124 belongs to Psalms 120–134, sung by Israelites traveling to Jerusalem for the annual feasts. As pilgrims ascended to the city set among the hills of Judah, these songs directed their thoughts toward the Lord’s protection, faithfulness, and presence.

Psa 120:1 A song of ascents. In my distress I cried to the LORD,…
Psa 121:1 A song of ascents. I lift up my eyes to the hills.…
Psa 122:1 I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go…

Of David.

David wrote from experience. Throughout his life, the Lord preserved him from Saul, foreign armies, internal rebellion, and personal danger. His rule also established Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and central place of worship.

Psa 11:1 In the LORD I take refuge. How then can you say to me:…
Psa 12:1 Help, O LORD, for the godly are no more; the faithful…
Psa 14:1 The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”…

If the LORD had not been on our side—

Israel’s survival did not rest on military strength or political skill. The covenant God had repeatedly defended His people when they faced enemies and dangers beyond their ability to overcome.

Psa 118:6 The LORD is on my side; I will not be afraid.…
Rom 8:31 What then shall we say in response to these things?…
Psa 56:9 Then my enemies will retreat on the day I cry for help.…

let Israel now declare—

The whole nation is called to acknowledge the Lord’s deliverance. Remembering His acts preserved Israel’s identity and bore witness that their security came from Him.

Psa 129:1 A song of ascents. Many a time they have persecuted me…
Psa 118:2 Let Israel say, “His loving devotion endures forever.”
Isa 12:4 “Give praise to the LORD; proclaim His name!…

if the LORD had not been on our side

Israel’s preservation rested on the LORD’s active protection. From the Exodus through the days of the judges and kings, the nation survived enemies and dangers that exceeded its own strength. Their covenant God had defended them and kept His promises.

Psa 118:6 The LORD is on my side; I will not be afraid.…
2Ch 32:8 With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD…
Rom 8:31 What then shall we say in response to these things?…

when men attacked us,

Israel repeatedly faced hostile powers seeking to subdue or destroy them, including Egypt, the Philistines, Assyria, and Babylon. The danger was real, yet the LORD’s intervention prevented their enemies from overcoming them completely.

Psa 56:2 My enemies pursue me all day long, for many…
Psa 140:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. Rescue me, O LORD,…
2Sa 22:18 He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from foes too mighty…

when their anger flared against us,

Israel’s enemies rose against them with violent hatred, seeking to destroy the nation God had chosen and preserved. Their hostility was not merely political but expressed open rebellion against God’s purposes for His people.

Est 3:5-6 When Haman saw that Mordecai would not bow down…
Neh 4:1 Now when Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall,…
Psa 2:1-2 Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?…

then they would have swallowed us alive,

Without the Lord’s protection, Israel would have been overwhelmed suddenly and completely, as prey consumed by a predator. Their survival testified that God restrained their enemies and kept His covenant people from ruin.

Pro 1:12 let us swallow them alive like Sheol, and whole…
Num 16:30-33 But if the LORD brings about something unprecedented,…
Psa 55:15 Let death seize them by surprise; let them go down to Sheol……

then the floods would have engulfed us,

Israel’s enemies are pictured as floodwaters rising beyond escape, symbolizing chaos and judgment in a land where sudden rains could turn dry valleys into destructive streams. Without the LORD’s help, the nation would have been swept away by forces stronger than itself.

Psa 69:1-2 For the choirmaster. To the tune of “Lilies.” Of David.…
Jon 2:3-5 For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas,…
Psa 42:7 Deep calls to deep in the roar of Your waterfalls;…

then the torrent would have overwhelmed us,

The rushing waters portray complete defeat and destruction. The psalm recalls that Israel’s survival did not rest on military strength or human planning, but on the LORD’s intervention when hostile powers threatened to consume them.

Jer 47:2 This is what the LORD says: “See how the waters are rising…
Psa 18:4-5 The cords of death encompassed me; the torrents of chaos…
Isa 43:2 When you go through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you.…

then the raging waters

“Then the raging waters” portrays a flood of destruction beyond human control, recalling the deadly force of waters in the ancient world and the Lord’s power to preserve His people amid overwhelming danger.

Gen 7:17 For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth…
Psa 18:16 He reached down from on high and took hold of me;…
Isa 8:7-8 the Lord will surely bring against them the floodwaters…

would have swept us away.

Without the Lord’s intervention, Israel would have been utterly destroyed by its enemies. The image stresses their dependence on God, who alone rescues His people from forces that would otherwise consume them.

Exo 14:27-28 So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea,…
Isa 43:2 When you go through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you.…
Psa 69:15 Do not let the floods engulf me or the depths swallow me up…

Blessed be the LORD,

Israel answers deliverance with praise to the covenant God, recognizing that its survival came from His rule and mercy.

Psa 68:19 Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears our burden…
Psa 144:1 Of David. Blessed be the LORD, my Rock,…
Psa 28:6 Blessed be the LORD, for He has heard my cry for mercy.

who has not given us

He did not abandon His people to the power of those who rose against them, but restrained their enemies and preserved them.

Psa 41:2 The LORD will protect and preserve him; He will bless him…
Psa 118:18 The LORD disciplined me severely, but He has not given me over…
1Sa 23:14 And David stayed in the wilderness strongholds…

as prey to their teeth.

The attackers are pictured as fierce predators ready to destroy their victims, yet the LORD prevented Israel from being consumed.

Pro 30:14 there is a generation whose teeth are swords…
Psa 57:4 My soul is among the lions; I lie down with ravenous beasts…
Psa 58:6 O God, shatter their teeth in their mouths;…

We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowler;

Israel’s deliverance is pictured as a helpless bird escaping a hunter’s trap. The fowler represents hostile enemies whose plans threatened to destroy God’s people. Their survival was not due to superior strength or skill, but to the Lord’s protection.

Psa 91:3 Surely He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler.…
Pro 6:5 Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter……
Ecc 9:12 For surely no man knows his time: Like fish caught…

the net is torn,

The trap itself has been broken, ending the enemy’s power to hold its prey. What human opposition intended for capture and ruin, God overturned by decisive intervention.

Psa 31:4 You free me from the net laid out for me…
Psa 141:10 Let the wicked fall into their own nets,…
Psa 140:5 The proud hide a snare for me; the cords of their net…

and we have slipped away.

The people have been freed from danger and preserved from destruction. The image recalls Israel’s repeated experience of being rescued when escape appeared impossible, directing praise to the Lord who delivered them.

2Co 11:33 But I was lowered in a basket through a window…
Jhn 10:39 At this, they tried again to seize Him, but…
Luk 4:30 But Jesus passed through the crowd and went on His way.

Our help is in the name of the LORD,

Israel’s safety rested not in military strength or political alliances but in the covenant God who had preserved His people through danger. The LORD’s name represents His revealed faithfulness, authority, and power to save.

Psa 20:7 Some trust in chariots and others in horses…
Isa 50:10 Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the voice…
Pro 18:10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower;…

the Maker of heaven and earth.

The One who delivered Israel is the Creator and ruler of all things. Because heaven and earth belong to Him, no threat exceeds His power or lies beyond His control.

Psa 121:2 My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.
Act 4:24 When the believers heard this, they lifted up their voices…
Exo 20:11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth…
