“Give thanks to YHWH, || For [He is] good, for His kindness [is] for all time”: Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.
Let the redeemed of YHWH say [so], || Whom He redeemed from the hand of an adversary. Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble Let the redeemed of the LORD tell their story— those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,
And has gathered them from the lands, || From east and from west, || From north, and from the sea. and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. those he gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south.
They wandered in a wilderness, in a desert by the way, || They have not found a city of habitation. Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in; Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to a city where they could settle.
Hungry—indeed—thirsty, || Their soul becomes feeble in them, hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away.
And they cry to YHWH in their adversity, || He delivers them from their distress, Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.
And causes them to tread in a right way, || To go to a city of habitation. He led them by a straight way till they reached a city to dwell in. He led them by a straight way to a city where they could settle.
They confess to YHWH His kindness, || And His wonders to the sons of men. Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind,
For He has satisfied a longing soul, || And has filled a hungry soul [with] goodness. For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things. for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.
Inhabitants of dark places and death-shade, || Prisoners of affliction and of iron, Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and in irons, Some sat in darkness, in utter darkness, prisoners suffering in iron chains,
Because they changed the saying of God, || And despised the counsel of the Most High. for they had rebelled against the words of God, and spurned the counsel of the Most High. because they rebelled against God’s commands and despised the plans of the Most High.
And He humbles their heart with labor, || They have been feeble, and there is no helper. So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor; they fell down, with none to help. So he subjected them to bitter labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help.
And they cry to YHWH in their adversity, || He saves them from their distresses. Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.
He brings them out from the dark place, || And death-shade, || And He draws away their bands. He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and burst their bonds apart. He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness, and broke away their chains.
They confess to YHWH His kindness, || And His wonders to the sons of men. Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind,
For He has broken doors of bronze, || And He has cut bars of iron. For he shatters the doors of bronze and cuts in two the bars of iron. for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron.
Fools, by means of their transgression, || And by their iniquities, afflict themselves. Some were fools through their sinful ways, and because of their iniquities suffered affliction; Some became fools through their rebellious ways and suffered affliction because of their iniquities.
Their soul detests all food, || And they come near to the gates of death, they loathed any kind of food, and they drew near to the gates of death. They loathed all food and drew near the gates of death.
And cry to YHWH in their adversity, || He saves them from their distresses, Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.
He sends His word and heals them, || And delivers [them] from their destructions. He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction. He sent out his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave.
They confess to YHWH His kindness, || And His wonders to the sons of men, Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind.
And they sacrifice sacrifices of thanksgiving, || And recount His works with singing. And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and tell of his deeds in songs of joy! Let them sacrifice thank offerings and tell of his works with songs of joy.
Those going down [to] the sea in ships, || Doing business in many waters, Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the great waters; Some went out on the sea in ships; they were merchants on the mighty waters.
They have seen the works of YHWH, || And His wonders in the deep. they saw the deeds of the LORD, his wondrous works in the deep. They saw the works of the LORD, his wonderful deeds in the deep.
And He commands, and appoints a storm, || And it lifts up its billows, For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea. For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves.
They go up [to] the heavens, they go down [to] the depths, || Their soul is melted in evil. They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their evil plight; They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away.
They reel to and fro, and move as a drunkard, || And all their wisdom is swallowed up. they reeled and staggered like drunken men and were at their wits’ end. They reeled and staggered like drunkards; they were at their wits’ end.
And they cry to YHWH in their adversity, || And He brings them out from their distresses. Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress.
He calms a whirlwind, || And their billows are hushed. He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.
And they rejoice because they are quiet, || And He leads them to the haven of their desire. Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven.
They confess to YHWH His kindness, || And His wonders to the sons of men, Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind.
And they exalt Him in [the] assembly of [the] people, || And praise Him in [the] seat of [the] elderly. Let them extol him in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders. Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the council of the elders.
He makes rivers become a wilderness, || And fountains of waters become dry land. He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into thirsty ground, He turned rivers into a desert, flowing springs into thirsty ground,
A fruitful land becomes a barren place, || For the wickedness of its inhabitants. a fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the evil of its inhabitants. and fruitful land into a salt waste, because of the wickedness of those who lived there.
He makes a wilderness become a pool of water, || And a dry land become fountains of waters. He turns a desert into pools of water, a parched land into springs of water. He turned the desert into pools of water and the parched ground into flowing springs;
And He causes the hungry to dwell there, || And they prepare a city of habitation. And there he lets the hungry dwell, and they establish a city to live in; there he brought the hungry to live, and they founded a city where they could settle.
And they sow fields, and plant vineyards, || And they make fruits of increase. they sow fields and plant vineyards and get a fruitful yield. They sowed fields and planted vineyards that yielded a fruitful harvest;
And He blesses them, and they multiply exceedingly, || And He does not diminish their livestock. By his blessing they multiply greatly, and he does not let their livestock diminish. he blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased, and he did not let their herds diminish.
And they are diminished, and bow down, || By restraint, evil, and sorrow. When they are diminished and brought low through oppression, evil, and sorrow, Then their numbers decreased, and they were humbled by oppression, calamity and sorrow;
He is pouring contempt on nobles, || And causes them to wander in vacancy—no way. he pours contempt on princes and makes them wander in trackless wastes; he who pours contempt on nobles made them wander in a trackless waste.
And sets the needy on high from affliction, || And places families as a flock. but he raises up the needy out of affliction and makes their families like flocks. But he lifted the needy out of their affliction and increased their families like flocks.
The upright see and rejoice, || And all perversity has shut her mouth. The upright see it and are glad, and all wickedness shuts its mouth. The upright see and rejoice, but all the wicked shut their mouths.
Who [is] wise, and observes these? They understand the kind acts of YHWH! Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let them consider the steadfast love of the LORD. Let the one who is wise heed these things and ponder the loving deeds of the LORD.
