New Living TranslationKing James Bible
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.1O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
Has the LORD redeemed you? Then speak out! Tell others he has redeemed you from your enemies.2Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy;
For he has gathered the exiles from many lands, from east and west, from north and south.3And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south.
Some wandered in the wilderness, lost and homeless.4They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in.
Hungry and thirsty, they nearly died.5Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.
“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he rescued them from their distress.6Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.
He led them straight to safety, to a city where they could live.7And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation.
Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them.8Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
For he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.9For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.
Some sat in darkness and deepest gloom, imprisoned in iron chains of misery.10Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron;
They rebelled against the words of God, scorning the counsel of the Most High.11Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High:
That is why he broke them with hard labor; they fell, and no one was there to help them.12Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; they fell down, and there was none to help.
“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.13Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.
He led them from the darkness and deepest gloom; he snapped their chains.14He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder.
Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them.15Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
For he broke down their prison gates of bronze; he cut apart their bars of iron.16For he hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder.
Some were fools; they rebelled and suffered for their sins.17Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted.
They couldn’t stand the thought of food, and they were knocking on death’s door.18Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death.
“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.19Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses.
He sent out his word and healed them, snatching them from the door of death.20He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.
Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them.21Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and sing joyfully about his glorious acts.22And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.
Some went off to sea in ships, plying the trade routes of the world.23They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters;
They, too, observed the LORD’s power in action, his impressive works on the deepest seas.24These see the works of the LORD, and his wonders in the deep.
He spoke, and the winds rose, stirring up the waves.25For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof.
Their ships were tossed to the heavens and plunged again to the depths; the sailors cringed in terror.26They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.
They reeled and staggered like drunkards and were at their wits’ end.27They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits' end.
“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.28Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.
He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves.29He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.
What a blessing was that stillness as he brought them safely into harbor!30Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.
Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them.31Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
Let them exalt him publicly before the congregation and before the leaders of the nation.32Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.
He changes rivers into deserts, and springs of water into dry, thirsty land.33He turneth rivers into a wilderness, and the watersprings into dry ground;
He turns the fruitful land into salty wastelands, because of the wickedness of those who live there.34A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.
But he also turns deserts into pools of water, the dry land into springs of water.35He turneth the wilderness into a standing water, and dry ground into watersprings.
He brings the hungry to settle there and to build their cities.36And there he maketh the hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a city for habitation;
They sow their fields, plant their vineyards, and harvest their bumper crops.37And sow the fields, and plant vineyards, which may yield fruits of increase.
How he blesses them! They raise large families there, and their herds of livestock increase.38He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly; and suffereth not their cattle to decrease.
When they decrease in number and become impoverished through oppression, trouble, and sorrow,39Again, they are minished and brought low through oppression, affliction, and sorrow.
the LORD pours contempt on their princes, causing them to wander in trackless wastelands.40He poureth contempt upon princes, and causeth them to wander in the wilderness, where there is no way.
But he rescues the poor from trouble and increases their families like flocks of sheep.41Yet setteth he the poor on high from affliction, and maketh him families like a flock.
The godly will see these things and be glad, while the wicked are struck silent.42The righteous shall see it, and rejoice: and all iniquity shall stop her mouth.
Those who are wise will take all this to heart; they will see in our history the faithful love of the LORD.43Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the LORD.
