One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in on him to listen to the word of God.1And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,
He noticed two empty boats at the water’s edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets.2And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.
Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. So he sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there.3And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.
When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.”4Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.
“Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.”5And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.
And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear!6And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.
A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking.7And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.
When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m such a sinful man.”8When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.
For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him.9For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:
His partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were also amazed. Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people!”10And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.
And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus. Jesus Heals a Man with Leprosy11And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.
In one of the villages, Jesus met a man with an advanced case of leprosy. When the man saw Jesus, he bowed with his face to the ground, begging to be healed. “Lord,” he said, “if you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean.”12And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. “Be healed!” And instantly the leprosy disappeared.13And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him.
Then Jesus instructed him not to tell anyone what had happened. He said, “Go to the priest and let him examine you. Take along the offering required in the law of Moses for those who have been healed of leprosy. This will be a public testimony that you have been cleansed.”14And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.
But despite Jesus’ instructions, the report of his power spread even faster, and vast crowds came to hear him preach and to be healed of their diseases.15But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.
But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer. Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man16And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.
One day while Jesus was teaching, some Pharisees and teachers of religious law were sitting nearby. (It seemed that these men showed up from every village in all Galilee and Judea, as well as from Jerusalem.) And the Lord’s healing power was strongly with Jesus.17And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.
Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a sleeping mat. They tried to take him inside to Jesus,18And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him.
but they couldn’t reach him because of the crowd. So they went up to the roof and took off some tiles. Then they lowered the sick man on his mat down into the crowd, right in front of Jesus.19And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus.
Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the man, “Young man, your sins are forgiven.”20And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.
But the Pharisees and teachers of religious law said to themselves, “Who does he think he is? That’s blasphemy! Only God can forgive sins!”21And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?
Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you question this in your hearts?22But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts?
Is it easier to say ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up and walk’?23Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk?
So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!”24But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house.
And immediately, as everyone watched, the man jumped up, picked up his mat, and went home praising God.25And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.
Everyone was gripped with great wonder and awe, and they praised God, exclaiming, “We have seen amazing things today!” Jesus Calls Levi (Matthew)26And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day.
Later, as Jesus left the town, he saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him.27And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me.
So Levi got up, left everything, and followed him.28And he left all, rose up, and followed him.
Later, Levi held a banquet in his home with Jesus as the guest of honor. Many of Levi’s fellow tax collectors and other guests also ate with them.29And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them.
But the Pharisees and their teachers of religious law complained bitterly to Jesus’ disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with such scum? ”30But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?
Jesus answered them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do.31And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.
I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent.” A Discussion about Fasting32I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
One day some people said to Jesus, “John the Baptist’s disciples fast and pray regularly, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees. Why are your disciples always eating and drinking?”33And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink?
Jesus responded, “Do wedding guests fast while celebrating with the groom? Of course not.34And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them?
But someday the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.”35But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.
Then Jesus gave them this illustration: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and uses it to patch an old garment. For then the new garment would be ruined, and the new patch wouldn’t even match the old garment.36And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.
“And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the new wine would burst the wineskins, spilling the wine and ruining the skins.37And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish.
New wine must be stored in new wineskins.38But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.
But no one who drinks the old wine seems to want the new wine. ‘The old is just fine,’ they say.”39No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.
