New Living TranslationKing James Bible
One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grainfields, his disciples broke off heads of grain, rubbed off the husks in their hands, and ate the grain.1And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands.
But some Pharisees said, “Why are you breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?”2And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days?
Jesus replied, “Haven’t you read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry?3And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him;
He went into the house of God and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests can eat. He also gave some to his companions.”4How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone?
And Jesus added, “The Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath.” Jesus Heals on the Sabbath5And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
On another Sabbath day, a man with a deformed right hand was in the synagogue while Jesus was teaching.6And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered.
The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees watched Jesus closely. If he healed the man’s hand, they planned to accuse him of working on the Sabbath.7And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him.
But Jesus knew their thoughts. He said to the man with the deformed hand, “Come and stand in front of everyone.” So the man came forward.8But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth.
Then Jesus said to his critics, “I have a question for you. Does the law permit good deeds on the Sabbath, or is it a day for doing evil? Is this a day to save life or to destroy it?”9Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?
He looked around at them one by one and then said to the man, “Hold out your hand.” So the man held out his hand, and it was restored!10And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.
At this, the enemies of Jesus were wild with rage and began to discuss what to do with him. Jesus Chooses the Twelve Apostles11And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus.
One day soon afterward Jesus went up on a mountain to pray, and he prayed to God all night.12And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
At daybreak he called together all of his disciples and chose twelve of them to be apostles. Here are their names:13And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;
Simon (whom he named Peter), Andrew (Peter’s brother), James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,14Simon, (whom he also named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,
Matthew, Thomas, James (son of Alphaeus), Simon (who was called the zealot),15Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes,
Judas (son of James), Judas Iscariot (who later betrayed him). Crowds Follow Jesus16And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor.
When they came down from the mountain, the disciples stood with Jesus on a large, level area, surrounded by many of his followers and by the crowds. There were people from all over Judea and from Jerusalem and from as far north as the seacoasts of Tyre and Sidon.17And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;
They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those troubled by evil spirits were healed.18And they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed.
Everyone tried to touch him, because healing power went out from him, and he healed everyone. The Beatitudes19And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.
Then Jesus turned to his disciples and said, “God blesses you who are poor, for the Kingdom of God is yours.20And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.
God blesses you who are hungry now, for you will be satisfied. God blesses you who weep now, for in due time you will laugh.21Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.
What blessings await you when people hate you and exclude you and mock you and curse you as evil because you follow the Son of Man.22Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.
When that happens, be happy! Yes, leap for joy! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, their ancestors treated the ancient prophets that same way. Sorrows Foretold23Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.
“What sorrow awaits you who are rich, for you have your only happiness now.24But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.
What sorrow awaits you who are fat and prosperous now, for a time of awful hunger awaits you. What sorrow awaits you who laugh now, for your laughing will turn to mourning and sorrow.25Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.
What sorrow awaits you who are praised by the crowds, for their ancestors also praised false prophets. Love for Enemies26Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.
“But to you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you.27But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,
Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you.28Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.
If someone slaps you on one cheek, offer the other cheek also. If someone demands your coat, offer your shirt also.29And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also.
Give to anyone who asks; and when things are taken away from you, don’t try to get them back.30Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.
Do to others as you would like them to do to you.31And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.
“If you love only those who love you, why should you get credit for that? Even sinners love those who love them!32For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them.
And if you do good only to those who do good to you, why should you get credit? Even sinners do that much!33And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.
And if you lend money only to those who can repay you, why should you get credit? Even sinners will lend to other sinners for a full return.34And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.
“Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is kind to those who are unthankful and wicked.35But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.
You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate. Do Not Judge Others36Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
“Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn others, or it will all come back against you. Forgive others, and you will be forgiven.37Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:
Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back. ”38Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
Then Jesus gave the following illustration: “Can one blind person lead another? Won’t they both fall into a ditch?39And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch?
Students are not greater than their teacher. But the student who is fully trained will become like the teacher.40The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.
“And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own?41And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
How can you think of saying, ‘Friend, let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye. The Tree and Its Fruit42Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye.
“A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit.43For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
A tree is identified by its fruit. Figs are never gathered from thornbushes, and grapes are not picked from bramble bushes.44For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.
A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart. Building on a Solid Foundation45A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
“So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say?46And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it.47Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:
It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built.48He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.
But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house right on the ground, without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.”49But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.
