NET BibleNew Living Translation
"And you, bring near to you your brother Aaron and his sons with him from among the Israelites, so that they may minister as my priests--Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron's sons.1“Call for your brother, Aaron, and his sons, Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. Set them apart from the rest of the people of Israel so they may minister to me and be my priests.
You must make holy garments for your brother Aaron, for glory and for beauty.2Make sacred garments for Aaron that are glorious and beautiful.
You are to speak to all who are specially skilled, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, so that they may make Aaron's garments to set him apart to minister as my priest.3Instruct all the skilled craftsmen whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom. Have them make garments for Aaron that will distinguish him as a priest set apart for my service.
Now these are the garments that they are to make: a breastpiece, an ephod, a robe, a fitted tunic, a turban, and a sash. They are to make holy garments for your brother Aaron and for his sons, that they may minister as my priests.4These are the garments they are to make: a chestpiece, an ephod, a robe, a patterned tunic, a turban, and a sash. They are to make these sacred garments for your brother, Aaron, and his sons to wear when they serve me as priests.
The artisans are to use the gold, blue, purple, scarlet, and fine linen. 5So give them fine linen cloth, gold thread, and blue, purple, and scarlet thread. Design of the Ephod
"They are to make the ephod of gold, blue, purple, scarlet, and fine twisted linen, the work of an artistic designer.6“The craftsmen must make the ephod of finely woven linen and skillfully embroider it with gold and with blue, purple, and scarlet thread.
It is to have two shoulder pieces attached to two of its corners, so it can be joined together.7It will consist of two pieces, front and back, joined at the shoulders with two shoulder-pieces.
The artistically woven waistband of the ephod that is on it is to be like it, of one piece with the ephod, of gold, blue, purple, scarlet, and fine twisted linen. 8The decorative sash will be made of the same materials: finely woven linen embroidered with gold and with blue, purple, and scarlet thread.
"You are to take two onyx stones and engrave on them the names of the sons of Israel,9“Take two onyx stones, and engrave on them the names of the tribes of Israel.
six of their names on one stone, and the six remaining names on the second stone, according to the order of their birth.10Six names will be on each stone, arranged in the order of the births of the original sons of Israel.
You are to engrave the two stones with the names of the sons of Israel with the work of an engraver in stone, like the engravings of a seal; you are to have them set in gold filigree settings.11Engrave these names on the two stones in the same way a jeweler engraves a seal. Then mount the stones in settings of gold filigree.
You are to put the two stones on the shoulders of the ephod, stones of memorial for the sons of Israel, and Aaron will bear their names before the LORD on his two shoulders for a memorial.12Fasten the two stones on the shoulder-pieces of the ephod as a reminder that Aaron represents the people of Israel. Aaron will carry these names on his shoulders as a constant reminder whenever he goes before the LORD.
You are to make filigree settings of gold13Make the settings of gold filigree,
and two braided chains of pure gold, like a cord, and attach the chains to the settings. 14then braid two cords of pure gold and attach them to the filigree settings on the shoulders of the ephod. Design of the Chestpiece
"You are to make a breastpiece for use in making decisions, the work of an artistic designer; you are to make it in the same fashion as the ephod; you are to make it of gold, blue, purple, scarlet, and fine twisted linen.15“Then, with great skill and care, make a chestpiece to be worn for seeking a decision from God. Make it to match the ephod, using finely woven linen embroidered with gold and with blue, purple, and scarlet thread.
It is to be square when doubled, nine inches long and nine inches wide.16Make the chestpiece of a single piece of cloth folded to form a pouch nine inches square.
You are to set in it a setting for stones, four rows of stones, a row with a ruby, a topaz, and a beryl--the first row;17Mount four rows of gemstones on it. The first row will contain a red carnelian, a pale-green peridot, and an emerald.
and the second row, a turquoise, a sapphire, and an emerald;18The second row will contain a turquoise, a blue lapis lazuli, and a white moonstone.
and the third row, a jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst;19The third row will contain an orange jacinth, an agate, and a purple amethyst.
and the fourth row, a chrysolite, an onyx, and a jasper. They are to be enclosed in gold in their filigree settings.20The fourth row will contain a blue-green beryl, an onyx, and a green jasper. All these stones will be set in gold filigree.
The stones are to be for the names of the sons of Israel, twelve, according to the number of their names. Each name according to the twelve tribes is to be like the engravings of a seal. 21Each stone will represent one of the twelve sons of Israel, and the name of that tribe will be engraved on it like a seal.
"You are to make for the breastpiece braided chains like cords of pure gold,22“To attach the chestpiece to the ephod, make braided cords of pure gold thread.
and you are to make for the breastpiece two gold rings and attach the two rings to the upper two ends of the breastpiece.23Then make two gold rings and attach them to the top corners of the chestpiece.
You are to attach the two gold chains to the two rings at the ends of the breastpiece;24Tie the two gold cords to the two rings on the chestpiece.
the other two ends of the two chains you will attach to the two settings and then attach them to the shoulder pieces of the ephod at the front of it.25Tie the other ends of the cords to the gold settings on the shoulder-pieces of the ephod.
You are to make two rings of gold and put them on the other two ends of the breastpiece, on its edge that is on the inner side of the ephod.26Then make two more gold rings and attach them to the inside edges of the chestpiece next to the ephod.
You are to make two more gold rings and attach them to the bottom of the two shoulder pieces on the front of the ephod, close to the juncture above the waistband of the ephod.27And make two more gold rings and attach them to the front of the ephod, below the shoulder-pieces, just above the knot where the decorative sash is fastened to the ephod.
They are to tie the breastpiece by its rings to the rings of the ephod by blue cord, so that it may be above the waistband of the ephod, and so that the breastpiece will not be loose from the ephod.28Then attach the bottom rings of the chestpiece to the rings on the ephod with blue cords. This will hold the chestpiece securely to the ephod above the decorative sash.
Aaron will bear the names of the sons of Israel in the breastpiece of decision over his heart when he goes into the holy place, for a memorial before the LORD continually. 29“In this way, Aaron will carry the names of the tribes of Israel on the sacred chestpiece over his heart when he goes into the Holy Place. This will be a continual reminder that he represents the people when he comes before the LORD.
"You are to put the Urim and the Thummim into the breastpiece of decision; and they are to be over Aaron's heart when he goes in before the LORD. Aaron is to bear the decisions of the Israelites over his heart before the LORD continually. 30Insert the Urim and Thummim into the sacred chestpiece so they will be carried over Aaron’s heart when he goes into the LORD’s presence. In this way, Aaron will always carry over his heart the objects used to determine the LORD’s will for his people whenever he goes in before the LORD. Additional Clothing for the Priests
"You are to make the robe of the ephod completely blue.31“Make the robe that is worn with the ephod from a single piece of blue cloth,
There is to be an opening in its top in the center of it, with an edge all around the opening, the work of a weaver, like the opening of a collar, so that it cannot be torn.32with an opening for Aaron’s head in the middle of it. Reinforce the opening with a woven collar so it will not tear.
You are to make pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet all around its hem and bells of gold between them all around.33Make pomegranates out of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and attach them to the hem of the robe, with gold bells between them.
The pattern is to be a gold bell and a pomegranate, a gold bell and a pomegranate, all around the hem of the robe.34The gold bells and pomegranates are to alternate all around the hem.
The robe is to be on Aaron as he ministers, and his sound will be heard when he enters the Holy Place before the LORD and when he leaves, so that he does not die. 35Aaron will wear this robe whenever he ministers before the LORD, and the bells will tinkle as he goes in and out of the LORD’s presence in the Holy Place. If he wears it, he will not die.
"You are to make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it the way a seal is engraved: "Holiness to the LORD."36“Next make a medallion of pure gold, and engrave it like a seal with these words: Holy to the Lord .
You are to attach to it a blue cord so that it will be on the turban; it is to be on the front of the turban,37Attach the medallion with a blue cord to the front of Aaron’s turban, where it must remain.
It will be on Aaron's forehead, and Aaron will bear the iniquity of the holy things, which the Israelites are to sanctify by all their holy gifts; it will always be on his forehead, for their acceptance before the LORD.38Aaron must wear it on his forehead so he may take on himself any guilt of the people of Israel when they consecrate their sacred offerings. He must always wear it on his forehead so the LORD will accept the people.
You are to weave the tunic of fine linen and make the turban of fine linen, and make the sash the work of an embroiderer. 39“Weave Aaron’s patterned tunic from fine linen cloth. Fashion the turban from this linen as well. Also make a sash, and decorate it with colorful embroidery.
"For Aaron's sons you are to make tunics, sashes, and headbands for glory and for beauty. 40“For Aaron’s sons, make tunics, sashes, and special head coverings that are glorious and beautiful.
"You are to clothe them--your brother Aaron and his sons with him--and anoint them and ordain them and set them apart as holy, so that they may minister as my priests.41Clothe your brother, Aaron, and his sons with these garments, and then anoint and ordain them. Consecrate them so they can serve as my priests.
Make for them linen undergarments to cover their naked bodies; they must cover from the waist to the thighs.42Also make linen undergarments for them, to be worn next to their bodies, reaching from their hips to their thighs.
These must be on Aaron and his sons when they enter to the tent of meeting, or when they approach the altar to minister in the Holy Place, so that they bear no iniquity and die. It is to be a perpetual ordinance for him and for his descendants after him. 43These must be worn whenever Aaron and his sons enter the Tabernacle or approach the altar in the Holy Place to perform their priestly duties. Then they will not incur guilt and die. This is a permanent law for Aaron and all his descendants after him.
