Psalm 89
New American Standard Bible 1995Christian Standard Bible
A Maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite. I will sing of the lovingkindness of the LORD forever; To all generations I will make known Your faithfulness with my mouth.1I will sing about the LORD's faithful love forever; I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations with my mouth.
For I have said, "Lovingkindness will be built up forever; In the heavens You will establish Your faithfulness."2For I will declare, "Faithful love is built up forever; you establish your faithfulness in the heavens."
"I have made a covenant with My chosen; I have sworn to David My servant,3The LORD said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have sworn an oath to David my servant:
I will establish your seed forever And build up your throne to all generations." Selah.4'I will establish your offspring forever and build up your throne for all generations.'" Selah
The heavens will praise Your wonders, O LORD; Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones.5LORD, the heavens praise your wonders--your faithfulness also--in the assembly of the holy ones.
For who in the skies is comparable to the LORD? Who among the sons of the mighty is like the LORD,6For who in the skies can compare with the LORD? Who among the heavenly beings is like the LORD?
A God greatly feared in the council of the holy ones, And awesome above all those who are around Him?7God is greatly feared in the council of the holy ones, more awe-inspiring than all who surround him.
O LORD God of hosts, who is like You, O mighty LORD? Your faithfulness also surrounds You.8LORD God of Armies, who is strong like you, LORD? Your faithfulness surrounds you.
You rule the swelling of the sea; When its waves rise, You still them.9You rule the raging sea; when its waves surge, you still them.
You Yourself crushed Rahab like one who is slain; You scattered Your enemies with Your mighty arm.10You crushed Rahab like one who is slain; you scattered your enemies with your powerful arm.
The heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours; The world and all it contains, You have founded them.11The heavens are yours; the earth also is yours. The world and everything in it--you founded them.
The north and the south, You have created them; Tabor and Hermon shout for joy at Your name.12North and south--you created them. Tabor and Hermon shout for joy at your name.
You have a strong arm; Your hand is mighty, Your right hand is exalted.13You have a mighty arm; your hand is powerful; your right hand is lifted high.
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; Lovingkindness and truth go before You.14Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; faithful love and truth go before you.
How blessed are the people who know the joyful sound! O LORD, they walk in the light of Your countenance.15Happy are the people who know the joyful shout; LORD, they walk in the light from your face.
In Your name they rejoice all the day, And by Your righteousness they are exalted.16They rejoice in your name all day long, and they are exalted by your righteousness.
For You are the glory of their strength, And by Your favor our horn is exalted.17For you are their magnificent strength; by your favor our horn is exalted.
For our shield belongs to the LORD, And our king to the Holy One of Israel.18Surely our shield belongs to the LORD, our king to the Holy One of Israel.
Once You spoke in vision to Your godly ones, And said, "I have given help to one who is mighty; I have exalted one chosen from the people.19You once spoke in a vision to your faithful ones and said: "I have granted help to a warrior; I have exalted one chosen from the people.
"I have found David My servant; With My holy oil I have anointed him,20I have found David my servant; I have anointed him with my sacred oil.
With whom My hand will be established; My arm also will strengthen him.21My hand will always be with him, and my arm will strengthen him.
"The enemy will not deceive him, Nor the son of wickedness afflict him.22The enemy will not oppress him; the wicked will not afflict him.
"But I shall crush his adversaries before him, And strike those who hate him.23I will crush his foes before him and strike those who hate him.
"My faithfulness and My lovingkindness will be with him, And in My name his horn will be exalted.24My faithfulness and love will be with him, and through my name his horn will be exalted.
"I shall also set his hand on the sea And his right hand on the rivers.25I will extend his power to the sea and his right hand to the rivers.
"He will cry to Me, 'You are my Father, My God, and the rock of my salvation.'26He will call to me, 'You are my Father, my God, the rock of my salvation.'
"I also shall make him My firstborn, The highest of the kings of the earth.27I will also make him my firstborn, greatest of the kings of the earth.
"My lovingkindness I will keep for him forever, And My covenant shall be confirmed to him.28I will always preserve my faithful love for him, and my covenant with him will endure.
"So I will establish his descendants forever And his throne as the days of heaven.29I will establish his line forever, his throne as long as heaven lasts.
"If his sons forsake My law And do not walk in My judgments,30If his sons abandon my instruction and do not live by my ordinances,
If they violate My statutes And do not keep My commandments,31if they dishonor my statutes and do not keep my commands,
Then I will punish their transgression with the rod And their iniquity with stripes.32then I will call their rebellion to account with the rod, their iniquity with blows.
"But I will not break off My lovingkindness from him, Nor deal falsely in My faithfulness.33But I will not withdraw my faithful love from him or betray my faithfulness.
"My covenant I will not violate, Nor will I alter the utterance of My lips.34I will not violate my covenant or change what my lips have said.
"Once I have sworn by My holiness; I will not lie to David.35Once and for all I have sworn an oath by my holiness; I will not lie to David.
"His descendants shall endure forever And his throne as the sun before Me.36His offspring will continue forever, his throne like the sun before me,
"It shall be established forever like the moon, And the witness in the sky is faithful." Selah.37like the moon, established forever, a faithful witness in the sky." Selah
But You have cast off and rejected, You have been full of wrath against Your anointed.38But you have spurned and rejected him; you have become enraged with your anointed.
You have spurned the covenant of Your servant; You have profaned his crown in the dust.39You have repudiated the covenant with your servant; you have completely dishonored his crown.
You have broken down all his walls; You have brought his strongholds to ruin.40You have broken down all his walls; you have reduced his fortified cities to ruins.
All who pass along the way plunder him; He has become a reproach to his neighbors.41All who pass by plunder him; he has become an object of ridicule to his neighbors.
You have exalted the right hand of his adversaries; You have made all his enemies rejoice.42You have lifted high the right hand of his foes; you have made all his enemies rejoice.
You also turn back the edge of his sword And have not made him stand in battle.43You have also turned back his sharp sword and have not let him stand in battle.
You have made his splendor to cease And cast his throne to the ground.44You have made his splendor cease and have overturned his throne.
You have shortened the days of his youth; You have covered him with shame. Selah.45You have shortened the days of his youth; you have covered him with shame. Selah
How long, O LORD? Will You hide Yourself forever? Will Your wrath burn like fire?46How long, LORD? Will you hide forever? Will your anger keep burning like fire?
Remember what my span of life is; For what vanity You have created all the sons of men!47Remember how short my life is. Have you created everyone for nothing?
What man can live and not see death? Can he deliver his soul from the power of Sheol? Selah.48What courageous person can live and never see death? Who can save himself from the power of Sheol? Selah
Where are Your former lovingkindnesses, O Lord, Which You swore to David in Your faithfulness?49Lord, where are the former acts of your faithful love that you swore to David in your faithfulness?
Remember, O Lord, the reproach of Your servants; How I bear in my bosom the reproach of all the many peoples,50Remember, Lord, the ridicule against your servants--in my heart I carry abuse from all the peoples--
With which Your enemies have reproached, O LORD, With which they have reproached the footsteps of Your anointed.51how your enemies have ridiculed, LORD, how they have ridiculed every step of your anointed.
Blessed be the LORD forever! Amen and Amen.52Blessed be the LORD forever. Amen and amen.
