Lamentations 3
HCSB Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
Holman Christian Standard BibleEnglish Standard Version
I am the man who has seen affliction under the rod of God's wrath. 1I am the man who has seen affliction under the rod of his wrath;
He has driven me away and forced me to walk in darkness instead of light. 2he has driven and brought me into darkness without any light;
Yes, He repeatedly turns His hand against me all day long. 3surely against me he turns his hand again and again the whole day long.
He has worn away my flesh and skin; He has shattered my bones. 4He has made my flesh and my skin waste away; he has broken my bones;
He has laid siege against me, encircling me with bitterness and hardship. 5he has besieged and enveloped me with bitterness and tribulation;
He has made me dwell in darkness like those who have been dead for ages. 6he has made me dwell in darkness like the dead of long ago.
He has walled me in so I cannot escape; He has weighed me down with chains. 7He has walled me about so that I cannot escape; he has made my chains heavy;
Even when I cry out and plead for help, He rejects my prayer. 8though I call and cry for help, he shuts out my prayer;
He has walled in my ways with cut stones; He has made my paths crooked. 9he has blocked my ways with blocks of stones; he has made my paths crooked.
He is a bear waiting in ambush, a lion in hiding. 10He is a bear lying in wait for me, a lion in hiding;
He forced me off my way and tore me to pieces; He left me desolate. 11he turned aside my steps and tore me to pieces; he has made me desolate;
He strung His bow and set me as the target for His arrow. 12he bent his bow and set me as a target for his arrow.
He pierced my kidneys with His arrows. 13He drove into my kidneys the arrows of his quiver;
I am a laughingstock to all my people, mocked by their songs all day long. 14I have become the laughingstock of all peoples, the object of their taunts all day long.
He filled me with bitterness, satiated me with wormwood. 15He has filled me with bitterness; he has sated me with wormwood.
He ground my teeth on gravel and made me cower in the dust. 16He has made my teeth grind on gravel, and made me cower in ashes;
My soul has been deprived of peace; I have forgotten what happiness is. 17my soul is bereft of peace; I have forgotten what happiness is;
Then I thought: My future is lost, as well as my hope from the LORD. 18so I say, “My endurance has perished; so has my hope from the LORD.”
Remember my affliction and my homelessness, the wormwood and the poison. 19Remember my affliction and my wanderings, the wormwood and the gall!
I continually remember them and have become depressed. 20My soul continually remembers it and is bowed down within me.
Yet I call this to mind, and therefore I have hope: 21But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope:
Because of the LORD's faithful love we do not perish, for His mercies never end. 22The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end;
They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness! 23they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
I say: The LORD is my portion, therefore I will put my hope in Him. 24“The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.”
The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, to the person who seeks Him. 25The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him.
It is good to wait quietly for deliverance from the LORD. 26It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD.
It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is still young. 27It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.
Let him sit alone and be silent, for God has disciplined him. 28Let him sit alone in silence when it is laid on him;
Let him put his mouth in the dust-- perhaps there is still hope. 29let him put his mouth in the dust— there may yet be hope;
Let him offer his cheek to the one who would strike him; let him be filled with shame. 30let him give his cheek to the one who strikes, and let him be filled with insults.
For the Lord will not reject us forever. 31For the Lord will not cast off forever,
Even if He causes suffering, He will show compassion according to His abundant, faithful love. 32but, though he cause grief, he will have compassion according to the abundance of his steadfast love;
For He does not enjoy bringing affliction or suffering on mankind. 33for he does not afflict from his heart or grieve the children of men.
Crushing all the prisoners of the land beneath one's feet, 34To crush underfoot all the prisoners of the earth,
denying justice to a man in the presence of the Most High, 35to deny a man justice in the presence of the Most High,
or suppressing a person's lawsuit-- the Lord does not approve of these things. 36to subvert a man in his lawsuit, the Lord does not approve.
Who is there who speaks and it happens, unless the Lord has ordained it? 37Who has spoken and it came to pass, unless the Lord has commanded it?
Do not both adversity and good come from the mouth of the Most High? 38Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that good and bad come?
Why should any living person complain, any man, because of the punishment for his sins? 39Why should a living man complain, a man, about the punishment of his sins?
Let us search out and examine our ways, and turn back to the LORD. 40Let us test and examine our ways, and return to the LORD!
Let us lift up our hearts and our hands to God in heaven: 41Let us lift up our hearts and hands to God in heaven:
We have sinned and rebelled; You have not forgiven. 42“We have transgressed and rebelled, and you have not forgiven.
You have covered Yourself in anger and pursued us; You have killed without compassion. 43“You have wrapped yourself with anger and pursued us, killing without pity;
You have covered Yourself with a cloud so that no prayer can pass through. 44you have wrapped yourself with a cloud so that no prayer can pass through.
You have made us disgusting filth among the peoples. 45You have made us scum and garbage among the peoples.
All our enemies open their mouths against us. 46“All our enemies open their mouths against us;
We have experienced panic and pitfall, devastation and destruction. 47panic and pitfall have come upon us, devastation and destruction;
My eyes flow with streams of tears because of the destruction of my dear people. 48my eyes flow with rivers of tears because of the destruction of the daughter of my people.
My eyes overflow unceasingly, without end, 49“My eyes will flow without ceasing, without respite,
until the LORD looks down from heaven and sees. 50until the LORD from heaven looks down and sees;
My eyes bring me grief because of the fate of all the women in my city. 51my eyes cause me grief at the fate of all the daughters of my city.
For no apparent reason, my enemies hunted me like a bird. 52“I have been hunted like a bird by those who were my enemies without cause;
They dropped me alive into a pit and threw stones at me. 53they flung me alive into the pit and cast stones on me;
Water flooded over my head, and I thought: I'm going to die! 54water closed over my head; I said, ‘I am lost.’
I called on Your name, Yahweh, from the depths of the Pit. 55“I called on your name, O LORD, from the depths of the pit;
You hear my plea: Do not ignore my cry for relief. 56you heard my plea, ‘Do not close your ear to my cry for help!’
You come near when I call on You; You say: "Do not be afraid." 57You came near when I called on you; you said, ‘Do not fear!’
You defend my cause, Lord; You redeem my life. 58“You have taken up my cause, O Lord; you have redeemed my life.
LORD, You see the wrong done to me; judge my case. 59You have seen the wrong done to me, O LORD; judge my cause.
You see all their malice, all their plots against me. 60You have seen all their vengeance, all their plots against me.
LORD, You hear their insults, all their plots against me. 61“You have heard their taunts, O LORD, all their plots against me.
The slander and murmuring of my opponents attack me all day long. 62The lips and thoughts of my assailants are against me all the day long.
When they sit and when they rise, look, I am mocked by their songs. 63Behold their sitting and their rising; I am the object of their taunts.
You will pay them back what they deserve, LORD, according to the work of their hands. 64“You will repay them, O LORD, according to the work of their hands.
You will give them a heart filled with anguish. May Your curse be on them! 65You will give them dullness of heart; your curse will be on them.
You will pursue them in anger and destroy them under Your heavens. 66You will pursue them in anger and destroy them from under your heavens, O LORD.”
