Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his faithful love endures forever. | 1Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! |
Let the redeemed of the LORD proclaim that he has redeemed them from the power of the foe | 2Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble |
and has gathered them from the lands--from the east and the west, from the north and the south. | 3and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. |
Some wandered in the desolate wilderness, finding no way to a city where they could live. | 4Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in; |
They were hungry and thirsty; their spirits failed within them. | 5hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. |
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; he rescued them from their distress. | 6Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. |
He led them by the right path to go to a city where they could live. | 7He led them by a straight way till they reached a city to dwell in. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his faithful love and his wondrous works for all humanity. | 8Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! |
For he has satisfied the thirsty and filled the hungry with good things. | 9For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things. |
Others sat in darkness and gloom--prisoners in cruel chains-- | 10Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and in irons, |
because they rebelled against God's commands and despised the counsel of the Most High. | 11for they had rebelled against the words of God, and spurned the counsel of the Most High. |
He broke their spirits with hard labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help. | 12So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor; they fell down, with none to help. |
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; he saved them from their distress. | 13Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. |
He brought them out of darkness and gloom and broke their chains apart. | 14He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and burst their bonds apart. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his faithful love and his wondrous works for all humanity. | 15Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! |
For he has broken down the bronze gates and cut through the iron bars. | 16For he shatters the doors of bronze and cuts in two the bars of iron. |
Fools suffered affliction because of their rebellious ways and their iniquities. | 17Some were fools through their sinful ways, and because of their iniquities suffered affliction; |
They loathed all food and came near the gates of death. | 18they loathed any kind of food, and they drew near to the gates of death. |
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; he saved them from their distress. | 19Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. |
He sent his word and healed them; he rescued them from the Pit. | 20He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his faithful love and his wondrous works for all humanity. | 21Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! |
Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and announce his works with shouts of joy. | 22And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and tell of his deeds in songs of joy! |
Others went to sea in ships, conducting trade on the vast water. | 23Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the great waters; |
They saw the LORD's works, his wondrous works in the deep. | 24they saw the deeds of the LORD, his wondrous works in the deep. |
He spoke and raised a stormy wind that stirred up the waves of the sea. | 25For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea. |
Rising up to the sky, sinking down to the depths, their courage melting away in anguish, | 26They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their evil plight; |
they reeled and staggered like a drunkard, and all their skill was useless. | 27they reeled and staggered like drunken men and were at their wits’ end. |
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. | 28Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. |
He stilled the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea were hushed. | 29He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. |
They rejoiced when the waves grew quiet. Then he guided them to the harbor they longed for. | 30Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his faithful love and his wondrous works for all humanity. | 31Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! |
Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the council of the elders. | 32Let them extol him in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders. |
He turns rivers into desert, springs into thirsty ground, | 33He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into thirsty ground, |
and fruitful land into salty wasteland, because of the wickedness of its inhabitants. | 34a fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the evil of its inhabitants. |
He turns a desert into a pool, dry land into springs. | 35He turns a desert into pools of water, a parched land into springs of water. |
He causes the hungry to settle there, and they establish a city where they can live. | 36And there he lets the hungry dwell, and they establish a city to live in; |
They sow fields and plant vineyards that yield a fruitful harvest. | 37they sow fields and plant vineyards and get a fruitful yield. |
He blesses them, and they multiply greatly; he does not let their livestock decrease. | 38By his blessing they multiply greatly, and he does not let their livestock diminish. |
When they are diminished and are humbled by cruel oppression and sorrow, | 39When they are diminished and brought low through oppression, evil, and sorrow, |
he pours contempt on nobles and makes them wander in a trackless wasteland. | 40he pours contempt on princes and makes them wander in trackless wastes; |
But he lifts the needy out of their suffering and makes their families multiply like flocks. | 41but he raises up the needy out of affliction and makes their families like flocks. |
The upright see it and rejoice, and all injustice shuts its mouth. | 42The upright see it and are glad, and all wickedness shuts its mouth. |
Let whoever is wise pay attention to these things and consider the LORD's acts of faithful love. | 43Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let them consider the steadfast love of the LORD. |
