while they offer false visions for you
This phrase refers to the false prophets in Israel who were misleading the people with deceptive visions. In the context of Ezekiel, these false prophets claimed to speak for God but were actually delivering messages that contradicted the true warnings given by genuine prophets like Ezekiel. This is reminiscent of the warnings against false prophets found in Deuteronomy 18:20-22 and Jeremiah 23:16-17. The presence of false prophets was a significant issue in Israel, as they often provided a false sense of security, leading the people away from repentance and obedience to God.

and lying divinations about you
Divination was a practice condemned by God (Deuteronomy 18:10-12), yet it was prevalent among the nations surrounding Israel and had infiltrated Israel itself. These lying divinations were attempts to predict the future or gain insight through means not sanctioned by God, often involving occult practices. The false prophets used these methods to deceive the people, claiming divine insight that was actually rooted in falsehood. This highlights the spiritual corruption and the departure from true worship that characterized the period leading up to the Babylonian exile.

to be placed on the necks of the wicked who are slain
This imagery suggests a burden or yoke placed upon those who are destined for judgment. The "necks of the wicked" symbolizes those who have persistently rebelled against God and are now facing the consequences of their actions. The phrase indicates that the false prophecies and divinations have contributed to the downfall of these individuals, as they were led astray and did not heed the true warnings of impending judgment. This aligns with the broader biblical theme of divine justice, where the wicked ultimately face retribution for their actions (Psalm 37:28).

whose day has come
This phrase signifies the arrival of the appointed time for judgment. In the prophetic literature, "the day" often refers to a time of divine intervention, either for deliverance or judgment. Here, it is a day of reckoning for the wicked, fulfilling the warnings given by true prophets like Ezekiel. This concept is echoed in other prophetic books, such as Isaiah 13:6 and Joel 2:1, where the "day of the Lord" is depicted as a time of both judgment and salvation.

the time of their final punishment
The finality of this punishment underscores the seriousness of the judgment being pronounced. It is not merely a temporary setback but a conclusive act of divine justice. This reflects the biblical principle that God's patience has limits, and persistent rebellion will ultimately lead to irrevocable consequences. The notion of final punishment is also seen in the New Testament, where it is associated with the ultimate judgment at the end of the age (Revelation 20:11-15). This serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of repentance and faithfulness to God.

What Does Ezekiel 21:29 Mean
False visions offered

• Ezekiel pictures self-appointed prophets spinning impressive images that never came from God (Ezekiel 13:6–7; Jeremiah 23:16).

• The Lord exposes these visions as empty, reminding us that any message contradicting His revealed word is deception (Deuteronomy 18:20-22).

• The phrase “for you” shows these false seers tailor their stories to please leaders in Jerusalem, not to honor God (Isaiah 30:10).

Lying divinations about you

• “Divinations” points to fortune-telling rituals designed to manipulate outcomes (1 Samuel 28:7; Acts 16:16).

• God labels them “lying”; the test of truth is always consistency with prior revelation (Galatians 1:8).

• Judah’s rulers preferred comforting predictions of safety instead of Ezekiel’s warning of judgment (Micah 2:11).

Placed on the necks of the wicked who are slain

• The sword of Babylon would soon press like a yoke on Judah’s neck (Jeremiah 27:8).

• False assurances actually fasten judgment more tightly, leaving sinners defenseless (Proverbs 29:6).

• Those already “slain” in God’s verdict are spiritually dead before the soldiers arrive (Ephesians 2:1).

Whose day has come

• Scripture often speaks of a fixed “day” when God settles accounts (Psalm 37:13; Obadiah 1:15).

• For Judah, that day was the 586 BC fall of Jerusalem; for every generation another appointed day awaits (Hebrews 9:27).

• God’s timeline is certain; delays in judgment are merciful opportunities to repent (2 Peter 3:9).

The time of their final punishment

• “Final” signals that earthly collapse would be followed by permanent loss—captivity, exile, and ultimately eternal separation for the unrepentant (Daniel 12:2; Revelation 20:11-15).

• The justice that fell on Judah foreshadows the ultimate reckoning at the great white throne (Matthew 25:31-46).

• Believers find refuge in Christ, who bore our punishment, fulfilling every righteous demand of the Law (Isaiah 53:5; Romans 8:1).

summary

Ezekiel 21:29 unmasks comforting but counterfeit prophecies that lulled Judah into sin. God labels them lies, warns that they only tighten the yoke of coming judgment, and announces a set day when wickedness meets its deserved end. The verse stands as a sober call to reject flattering voices, trust the unchanging Word, and flee to the one Savior who rescues from final punishment.

(29) See vanity unto thee.--"See" is used in the sense of the utterances of the "seer," or prophet. The Ammonites also had false prophets among them.

Thee upon the necks of them that are slain.--Judah is to fall first, then Ammon immediately after, as it were, upon the necks of those already slain. The figure is taken from the battle, in which one warrior falls upon the body of him who fell before him.

When their iniquity shall have an end.--Not through repentance, but because it ceases of necessity with the death of the sinner.

Verse 29. - Whiles they see, etc. The words may possibly refer to Nebuchadnezzar's diviners in ver. 21, but more probably to those whom the Ammonites themselves consulted. The pronoun "thee" in both clauses refers to Ammon. The result of those who divined falsely was that the sword would be drawn against the necks of the Ammonites and threw them upon the heap of the slaughtered ones. For them, as in the words that end the verse, reproducing those of ver. 25, punishment is decreed, and that punishment will come.
