1Moreover, Ahithophel said to Absalom, “I would choose out twelve thousand men, and rise and pursue David tonight; 2And come upon him while he is weary and weak handed, and will make him afraid, and all the people who are with him shall flee; and I would strike the king only. 3And it would bring all the people back to you. You only seek the death of one man; then all the people shall return to you in peace”. 4And that advice pleased Absalom, and all the elders of Israel, well. 5Then Absalom said, “Call now Hushai, the Archite, also, and let us hear what he says, as well.” 6And when Hushai had come to Absalom, Absalom said to him, “Ahithophel has spoken thusly; shall we do as he says? If not; speak up.” 7And Hushai said to Absalom, “The counsel that Ahithophel has given is not good at this time. 8For you know your father and his men, that they are mighty men, and they are chafed in their minds, like a bear robbed of her whelps in the field; and your father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people. 9He is probably hidden now in some pit, or in some other place; and when some of your men are lost when you first attack them, whoever hears of it will say, ‘There is a slaughter among the people who follow Absalom’. 10And even those who are valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, shall utterly lose heart; for all Israel knows that your father is a mighty man, and they who are with him are valiant men. 11Therefore I advise that all Israel be generally gathered to you, from Dan to Beersheba, as numerous as the sand by the sea; and that you go to battle in person. 12So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falls on the ground; and there shall not be left of him and the men who are with him so much as one. 13Moreover, if he has gotten into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there be not one small stone found there”. 14And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The counsel of Hushai, the Archite, is better than the counsel of Ahithophel”. For the LORD had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring disaster upon Absalom.

15Then Hushai said to Zadok and to Abiathar, the priests, “Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counseled. 16Now, therefore, send quickly, and tell David, “Do not lodge this night in the plains of the wilderness, but quickly cross over, lest king David be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him”. 17Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz stayed by En-rogel; that they might not be seen coming into the city. And a maidservant took the message to them; and they went and told King David. 18But a lad saw them, and told Absalom; so the two of them went away quickly, and came to a man's house in Bahurim, who had a well in his court; and they went down into the well. 19And the woman spread a covering over the well's mouth, and spread ground grain on it; and the well was not evident. 20And when Absalom's servants came to the woman of the house, they said, “Where is Ahimaaz and Jonathan?” And the woman said, “They have gone over the brook of water”. And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem. 21And after Absalom’s men had left, they came up out of the well, and went and told king David, “Arise, and pass quickly over the water; for thus has Ahithophel counseled against you”. 22Then David, and all those with him, arose and crossed over the Jordan; by the morning light there was not one of them left who had not crossed the Jordan.

23And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey, and went to his house, in his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulcher of his father.

24Then David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom, and all the men of Israel with him, crossed over the Jordan. 25And Absalom made Amasa commander of the army instead of Joab; this Amasa was a son of a man named Ithra, an Israelite, who had married Abigail, the daughter of Nahash, the half-sister of David and sister of Zeruiah, Joab's mother. 26So Israel and Absalom encamped in the land of Gilead. 27And when David had come to Mahanaim, Shobi, son of Nahash, of Rabbah, of the Ammonites, and Machir, son of Ammiel of Lo-debar, and Barzillai, the Gileadite of Rogelim, 28Brought beds, basins, clay pots, wheat, barley, flour, parched grain, beans, lentils, parched pulse, 29And honey, butter, sheep, and cheese of cows, for David, and the people with him, to eat; for they said, “The people are hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.
