God’s Vengeance on the Nations

1  מִי־ (Who is) זֶ֣ה׀ (this) בָּ֣א (coming) מֵאֱד֗וֹם (from Edom)

חֲמ֤וּץ (in crimsoned) בְּגָדִים֙ (garments) מִבָּצְרָ֔ה (from Bozrah)

זֶ֚ה (this One) הָד֣וּר (glorious) בִּלְבוּשׁ֔וֹ (in His apparel),

צֹעֶ֖ה (traveling) בְּרֹ֣ב (in the greatness) כֹּח֑וֹ (of His strength)?

אֲנִ֛י (It is I) מְדַבֵּ֥ר (proclaiming) בִּצְדָקָ֖ה (vindication),

רַ֥ב (mighty) לְהוֹשִֽׁיעַ׃ (to save).

2  מַדּ֥וּעַ (Why is) אָדֹ֖ם (red) לִלְבוּשֶׁ֑ךָ (to Your clothing),

וּבְגָדֶ֖יךָ (and Your garments) כְּדֹרֵ֥ךְ (like one treading) בְּגַֽת׃ (in the winepress)?

3  פּוּרָ֣ה׀ (The winepress) דָּרַ֣כְתִּי (I have trodden) לְבַדִּ֗י (by myself alone);

וּמֵֽעַמִּים֙ (and from the peoples) אֵֽין־ (no) אִ֣ישׁ (man) אִתִּ֔י (was with me)

וְאֶדְרְכֵ֣ם (and I trampled them) בְּאַפִּ֔י (in My anger),

וְאֶרְמְסֵ֖ם (and I trampled them) בַּחֲמָתִ֑י (in My fury);

וְיֵ֤ז (and is sprinkled) נִצְחָם֙ (their blood) עַל־ (upon) בְּגָדַ֔י (My garments),

וְכָל־ (and all) מַלְבּוּשַׁ֖י (My clothes) אֶגְאָֽלְתִּי׃ (I have stained).

4  כִּ֛י (For) י֥וֹם (the day) נָקָ֖ם (of vengeance) בְּלִבִּ֑י (is in My heart),

וּשְׁנַ֥ת (and the year) גְּאוּלַ֖י (of My redeeming) בָּֽאָה׃ (has come).

5  וְאַבִּיט֙ (And I looked), וְאֵ֣ין (and there was no one) עֹזֵ֔ר (helping);

וְאֶשְׁתּוֹמֵ֖ם (and I was dismayed) וְאֵ֣ין (that there was no one) סוֹמֵ֑ךְ (to uphold);

וַתּ֤וֹשַֽׁע (and brought salvation) לִי֙ (for Me) זְרֹעִ֔י (My own arm)

וַחֲמָתִ֖י (and My own wrath), הִ֥יא (it was) סְמָכָֽתְנִי׃ (that upheld Me).

6  וְאָב֤וּס (And I trampled) עַמִּים֙ (the peoples) בְּאַפִּ֔י (in My anger),

וַאֲשַׁכְּרֵ֖ם (and made them drunk) בַּחֲמָתִ֑י (in My wrath),

וְאוֹרִ֥יד (and I poured out) לָאָ֖רֶץ (to the earth) נִצְחָֽם׃ס (their blood).

God’s Mercies Recalled

7  חַֽסְדֵ֨י (The loving devotion) יְהוָ֤ה׀ (of YHWH), אַזְכִּיר֙ (I will recount)

תְּהִלֹּ֣ת (the praises) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH),

כְּעַ֕ל (according to) כֹּ֥ל (all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) גְּמָלָ֖נוּ (has done for us) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH)

וְרַב־ (and the abundant) טוּב֙ (goodness) לְבֵ֣ית (to the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), אֲשֶׁר־ (that)

גְּמָלָ֥ם (He has done for them) כְּֽרַחֲמָ֖יו (according to His compassion), וּכְרֹ֥ב (and according to the abundance) חֲסָדָֽיו׃ (of His loving devotion).

8  וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And He said), אַךְ־ (Surely) עַמִּ֣י (My people), הֵ֔מָּה (they are)

בָּנִ֖ים (sons) לֹ֣א (not) יְשַׁקֵּ֑רוּ (unfaithful);

וַיְהִ֥י (and He was) לָהֶ֖ם (unto them) לְמוֹשִֽׁיעַ׃ (as a Savior).

9  בְּֽכָל־ (In all) צָרָתָ֣ם׀ (their distress) לֹא (he) צָ֗ר (was afflicted),

וּמַלְאַ֤ךְ (and the Angel) פָּנָיו֙ (of His Presence) הֽוֹשִׁיעָ֔ם (saved them)

בְּאַהֲבָת֥וֹ (in His love) וּבְחֶמְלָת֖וֹ (and in His compassion) ה֣וּא (He) גְאָלָ֑ם (redeemed them)

וַֽיְנַטְּלֵ֥ם (and He lifted them) וַֽיְנַשְּׂאֵ֖ם (and carried them)

כָּל־ (all) יְמֵ֥י (the days) עוֹלָֽם׃ (of old).

10  וְהֵ֛מָּה (And they) מָר֥וּ (rebelled),

וְעִצְּב֖וּ (and grieved) אֶת־ (-) ר֣וּחַ (Spirit); קָדְשׁ֑וֹ (His Holy)

וַיֵּהָפֵ֥ךְ (and He turned Himself) לָהֶ֛ם (against them) לְאוֹיֵ֖ב (as an enemy),

ה֥וּא (and He) נִלְחַם־ (fought) בָּֽם׃ (against them).

11  וַיִּזְכֹּ֥ר (And He remembered) יְמֵֽי־ (the days) עוֹלָ֖ם (of old),

מֹשֶׁ֣ה (of Moses), עַמּ֑וֹ (and his people),

אַיֵּ֣ה׀ (Where is) הַֽמַּעֲלֵ֣ם (the One who brought them up) מִיָּ֗ם (from the sea)

אֵ֚ת (with) רֹעֵ֣י (the shepherds) צֹאנ֔וֹ (of His flock)?

אַיֵּ֛ה (Where is) הַשָּׂ֥ם (is the One who set)

בְּקִרְבּ֖וֹ (within him) אֶת־ (-) ר֥וּחַ (Spirit) קָדְשֽׁוֹ׃ (His Holy).

12  מוֹלִיךְ֙ (The One leading them) לִימִ֣ין (by the right hand) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (of Moses)

זְר֖וֹעַ (the arm), תִּפְאַרְתּ֑וֹ (of His glory)

בּ֤וֹקֵֽעַ (dividing) מַ֙יִם֙ (the waters) מִפְּנֵיהֶ֔ם (before their face)

לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת (to make) ל֖וֹ (for Himself) שֵׁ֥ם (name) עוֹלָֽם׃ (an everlasting)?

13  מוֹלִיכָ֖ם (The One leading them) בַּתְּהֹמ֑וֹת (through the depths),

כַּסּ֥וּס (like a horse) בַּמִּדְבָּ֖ר (in the wilderness),

לֹ֥א (not) יִכָּשֵֽׁלוּ׃ (they did stumble)?

14  כַּבְּהֵמָה֙ (As the beast) בַּבִּקְעָ֣ה (into the valley), תֵרֵ֔ד (goes down)

ר֥וּחַ (the Spirit) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) תְּנִיחֶ֑נּוּ (gave them rest);

כֵּ֚ן (thus) נִהַ֣גְתָּ (You led) עַמְּךָ֔ (Your people),

לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת (to make) לְךָ֖ (for Yourself) שֵׁ֥ם (name) תִּפְאָֽרֶת׃ (a glorious).

A Prayer for Mercy
(Jeremiah 14:19–22)

15  הַבֵּ֤ט (Look down) מִשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ (from the heavens), וּרְאֵ֔ה (and see)

מִזְּבֻ֥ל (from the habitation) קָדְשְׁךָ֖ (of Your holiness) וְתִפְאַרְתֶּ֑ךָ (and Your glory);

אַיֵּ֤ה (where is) קִנְאָֽתְךָ֙ (Your zeal) וּגְב֣וּרֹתֶ֔ךָ (and Your strength),

הֲמ֥וֹן (the groaning) מֵעֶ֛יךָ (of Your bowels) וְֽרַחֲמֶ֖יךָ (and Your compassion) אֵלַ֥י (toward me)

הִתְאַפָּֽקוּ׃ (are they restrained)?

16  כִּֽי־ (For) אַתָּ֣ה (You are) אָבִ֔ינוּ (our Father),

כִּ֤י (though) אַבְרָהָם֙ (Abraham) לֹ֣א (not) יְדָעָ֔נוּ (does know us)

וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (and Israel) לֹ֣א (does not); יַכִּירָ֑נוּ (acknowledge us)

אַתָּ֤ה (You), יְהוָה֙ (O YHWH), אָבִ֔ינוּ (are our Father),

גֹּאֲלֵ֥נוּ (Our Redeemer); מֵֽעוֹלָ֖ם (from Everlasting) שְׁמֶֽךָ׃ (is Your name).

17  לָ֣מָּה (Why) תַתְעֵ֤נוּ (do You let us stray) יְהוָה֙ (O YHWH), מִדְּרָכֶ֔יךָ (from Your ways),

תַּקְשִׁ֥יחַ (and harden) לִבֵּ֖נוּ (our hearts) מִיִּרְאָתֶ֑ךָ (from fearing You)?

שׁ֚וּב (Return) לְמַ֣עַן (for the sake)

עֲבָדֶ֔יךָ (of Your servants) שִׁבְטֵ֖י (the tribes) נַחֲלָתֶֽךָ׃ (of Your inheritance).

18  לַמִּצְעָ֕ר (For only a little while); יָרְשׁ֖וּ (possessed it) עַם־ (people) קָדְשֶׁ֑ךָ (Your holy)

צָרֵ֕ינוּ (our adversaries) בּוֹסְס֖וּ (have trampled) מִקְדָּשֶֽׁךָ׃ (Your sanctuary). 19  הָיִ֗ינוּ (We have been)

מֵֽעוֹלָם֙ (from of old) לֹֽא־ (not) מָשַׁ֣לְתָּ (You had ruled) בָּ֔ם (over them)

לֹֽא־ (not) נִקְרָ֥א (called) שִׁמְךָ֖ (Your name) עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם (by)
