Hagar and Ishmael

1  וְשָׂרַי֙ (And Sarai) אֵ֣שֶׁת (the wife) אַבְרָ֔ם (of Abram) לֹ֥א (not) יָלְדָ֖ה (had borne a child) ל֑וֹ (to him); וְלָ֛הּ (and she had) שִׁפְחָ֥ה (a maidservant), מִצְרִ֖ית (an Egyptianess), וּשְׁמָ֥הּ (and her name) הָגָֽר׃ (was Hagar). 2  וַתֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) שָׂרַ֜י (Sarai) אֶל־ (to) אַבְרָ֗ם (Abram), הִנֵּה־ (Behold) נָ֞א (now), עֲצָרַ֤נִי (has restrained me) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) מִלֶּ֔דֶת (from bearing children). בֹּא־ (Go in), נָא֙ (please), אֶל־ (to) שִׁפְחָתִ֔י (my maidservant); אוּלַ֥י (perhaps) אִבָּנֶ֖ה (I shall be built up) מִמֶּ֑נָּה (from her).

וַיִּשְׁמַ֥ע (And listened) אַבְרָ֖ם (Abram) לְק֥וֹל (to the voice) שָׂרָֽי׃ (of Sarai). 3  וַתִּקַּ֞ח (And took) שָׂרַ֣י (Sarai) אֵֽשֶׁת־ (wife) אַבְרָ֗ם (of Abram) אֶת־ (-) הָגָ֤ר (Hagar) הַמִּצְרִית֙ (the Egyptianess), שִׁפְחָתָ֔הּ (her maidservant), מִקֵּץ֙ (after) עֶ֣שֶׂר (ten) שָׁנִ֔ים (years) לְשֶׁ֥בֶת (dwelling) אַבְרָ֖ם (of Abram) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) כְּנָ֑עַן (of Canaan), וַתִּתֵּ֥ן (and she gave) אֹתָ֛הּ (her) לְאַבְרָ֥ם (to Abram) אִישָׁ֖הּ (her husband) ל֥וֹ (for) לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ (a wife). 4  וַיָּבֹ֥א (And he went in) אֶל־ (to) הָגָ֖ר (Hagar), וַתַּ֑הַר (and she conceived). וַתֵּ֙רֶא֙ (And she saw) כִּ֣י (that) הָרָ֔תָה (she had conceived), וַתֵּקַ֥ל (and became despised) גְּבִרְתָּ֖הּ (her mistress) בְּעֵינֶֽיהָ׃ (in her eyes).

5  וַתֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) שָׂרַ֣י (Sarai) אֶל־ (to) אַבְרָם֮ (Abram), חֲמָסִ֣י (My wrong be) עָלֶיךָ֒ (upon you). אָנֹכִ֗י (I) נָתַ֤תִּי (gave) שִׁפְחָתִי֙ (my maidservant) בְּחֵיקֶ֔ךָ (into your bosom), וַתֵּ֙רֶא֙ (and she saw) כִּ֣י (that) הָרָ֔תָה (she had conceived), וָאֵקַ֖ל (and I became despised) בְּעֵינֶ֑יהָ (in her eyes). יִשְׁפֹּ֥ט (May judge) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) בֵּינִ֥י (between me) וּבֵינֶֽיׄךָ׃ (and between you).

6  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) אַבְרָ֜ם (Abram) אֶל־ (to) שָׂרַ֗י (Sarai), הִנֵּ֤ה (Indeed), שִׁפְחָתֵךְ֙ (your maidservant is) בְּיָדֵ֔ךְ (in your hand). עֲשִׂי־ (Do) לָ֖הּ (to her) הַטּ֣וֹב (what is good) בְּעֵינָ֑יִךְ (in your eyes). וַתְּעַנֶּ֣הָ (And dealt harshly with her) שָׂרַ֔י (Sarai), וַתִּבְרַ֖ח (and she fled) מִפָּנֶֽיהָ׃ (from her presence).

7  וַֽיִּמְצָאָ֞הּ (And found her) מַלְאַ֧ךְ (the angel) יְהוָ֛ה (of YHWH) עַל־ (by) עֵ֥ין (the spring) הַמַּ֖יִם (of waters) בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר (in the wilderness), עַל־ (by) הָעַ֖יִן (the spring) בְּדֶ֥רֶךְ (on the way to) שֽׁוּר׃ (Shur). 8  וַיֹּאמַ֗ר (And He said), הָגָ֞ר (Hagar), שִׁפְחַ֥ת (maidservant) שָׂרַ֛י (of Sarai), אֵֽי־ (from where) מִזֶּ֥ה (is this) בָ֖את (you have come), וְאָ֣נָה (and where) תֵלֵ֑כִי (are you going)?

וַתֹּ֕אמֶר (And she said), מִפְּנֵי֙ (From the presence) שָׂרַ֣י (of Sarai) גְּבִרְתִּ֔י (my mistress) אָנֹכִ֖י (I) בֹּרַֽחַת׃ (am fleeing).

9  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) לָהּ֙ (to her) מַלְאַ֣ךְ (the angel) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), שׁ֖וּבִי (Return) אֶל־ (to) גְּבִרְתֵּ֑ךְ (your mistress), וְהִתְעַנִּ֖י (and submit yourself) תַּ֥חַת (under) יָדֶֽיהָ׃ (her hand). 10  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) לָהּ֙ (to her) מַלְאַ֣ךְ (the angel) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), הַרְבָּ֥ה (Multiplying) אַרְבֶּ֖ה (I will multiply) אֶת־ (-) זַרְעֵ֑ךְ (your seed), וְלֹ֥א (so that not) יִסָּפֵ֖ר (they shall be counted) מֵרֹֽב׃ (for multitude).

11  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) לָהּ֙ (to her) מַלְאַ֣ךְ (the angel) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH),

הִנָּ֥ךְ (Behold), הָרָ֖ה (you are conceiving) וְיֹלַ֣דְתְּ (and you shall bear) בֵּ֑ן (a son).

וְקָרָ֤את (And you shall call) שְׁמוֹ֙ (his name) יִשְׁמָעֵ֔אל (Ishmael),

כִּֽי־ (for) שָׁמַ֥ע (has listened) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) עָנְיֵֽךְ׃ (your affliction).

12  וְה֤וּא (And He) יִהְיֶה֙ (shall be) פֶּ֣רֶא (a wild donkey) אָדָ֔ם (of a man);

יָד֣וֹ (His hand is) בַכֹּ֔ל (against everyone),

וְיַ֥ד (and the hand) כֹּ֖ל (of everyone) בּ֑וֹ (is against him);

וְעַל־ (and over against) פְּנֵ֥י (the face) כָל־ (of all) אֶחָ֖יו (his brothers)

יִשְׁכֹּֽן׃ (he shall dwell).

13  וַתִּקְרָ֤א (And she called) שֵׁם־ (the name) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) הַדֹּבֵ֣ר (who spoke) אֵלֶ֔יהָ (to her), אַתָּ֖ה (You are) אֵ֣ל (El-) רֳאִ֑י (Roi), כִּ֣י (for) אָֽמְרָ֗ה (she said), הֲגַ֥ם (Was it indeed that) הֲלֹ֛ם (here) רָאִ֖יתִי (I have seen) אַחֲרֵ֥י (after) רֹאִֽי׃ (Him who sees me). 14  עַל־ (Upon) כֵּן֙ (thus) קָרָ֣א (was called) לַבְּאֵ֔ר (the well) בְּאֵ֥ר (Beer-) לַחַ֖י (lahai-) רֹאִ֑י (roi). הִנֵּ֥ה (Behold), בֵין־ (it is between) קָדֵ֖שׁ (Kadesh) וּבֵ֥ין (and between) בָּֽרֶד׃ (Bered).

15  וַתֵּ֧לֶד (And bore) הָגָ֛ר (Hagar) לְאַבְרָ֖ם (to Abram) בֵּ֑ן (a son), וַיִּקְרָ֨א (and) אַבְרָ֧ם (Abram) שֶׁם־ (named) בְּנ֛וֹ (his son), אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) יָלְדָ֥ה (had borne) הָגָ֖ר (Hagar), יִשְׁמָעֵֽאל׃ (Ishmael). 16  וְאַבְרָ֕ם (And Abram) בֶּן־ (was a son) שְׁמֹנִ֥ים (of eighty) שָׁנָ֖ה (years) וְשֵׁ֣שׁ (and six) שָׁנִ֑ים (years) בְּלֶֽדֶת־ (when bore) הָגָ֥ר (Hagar) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׁמָעֵ֖אל (Ishmael) לְאַבְרָֽם׃ס (to Abram).
