God’s Covenant with Abram
(Romans 4:1–12; Hebrews 11:8–19)

1  אַחַ֣ר׀ (After) הַדְּבָרִ֣ים (the things) הָאֵ֗לֶּה (these), הָיָ֤ה (came) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) אֶל־ (to) אַבְרָ֔ם (Abram) בַּֽמַּחֲזֶ֖ה (in a vision), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying),

אַל־ (Not) תִּירָ֣א (do be afraid), אַבְרָ֗ם (Abram),

אָנֹכִי֙ (I am) מָגֵ֣ן (shield) לָ֔ךְ (to you),

שְׂכָרְךָ֖ (your reward) הַרְבֵּ֥ה (is great) מְאֹֽד׃ (exceedingly).

2  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) אַבְרָ֗ם (Abram), אֲדֹנָ֤י (O Lord) יֱהוִה֙ (YHWH), מַה־ (what) תִּתֶּן־ (can You give) לִ֔י (to me), וְאָנֹכִ֖י (and I) הוֹלֵ֣ךְ (go) עֲרִירִ֑י (childless), וּבֶן־ (and the son) מֶ֣שֶׁק (of possession) בֵּיתִ֔י (of my house) ה֖וּא (is) דַּמֶּ֥שֶׂק (of Damascus) אֱלִיעֶֽזֶר׃ (Eliezer)? 3  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) אַבְרָ֔ם (Abram), הֵ֣ן (Behold), לִ֔י (to me) לֹ֥א (not) נָתַ֖תָּה (You have given) זָ֑רַע (offspring); וְהִנֵּ֥ה (and behold), בֶן־ (a son) בֵּיתִ֖י (of my house) יוֹרֵ֥שׁ (is inheriting) אֹתִֽי׃ (me).

4  וְהִנֵּ֨ה (And behold), דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֤ה (of YHWH) אֵלָיו֙ (came to him) לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), לֹ֥א (Not) יִֽירָשְׁךָ֖ (will not inherit you) זֶ֑ה (this one); כִּי־ (but) אִם֙ (rather), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (one who) יֵצֵ֣א (will come) מִמֵּעֶ֔יךָ (from your inward parts), ה֖וּא (he) יִֽירָשֶֽׁךָ׃ (will inherit you). 5  וַיּוֹצֵ֨א (And He brought) אֹת֜וֹ (him) הַח֗וּצָה (outside) וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (and said), הַבֶּט־ (Look) נָ֣א (now) הַשָּׁמַ֗יְמָה (toward the heavens) וּסְפֹר֙ (and count) הַכּ֣וֹכָבִ֔ים (the stars), אִם־ (if) תּוּכַ֖ל (you are able) לִסְפֹּ֣ר (to count) אֹתָ֑ם (them). וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And He said) ל֔וֹ (to him), כֹּ֥ה (So) יִהְיֶ֖ה (shall be) זַרְעֶֽךָ׃ (your seed).

6  וְהֶאֱמִ֖ן (And he believed) בַּֽיהוָ֑ה (in YHWH), וַיַּחְשְׁבֶ֥הָ (and He reckoned it) לּ֖וֹ (to him) צְדָקָֽה׃ (as righteousness).

7  וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (And He said) אֵלָ֑יו (to him), אֲנִ֣י (I am) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (who) הוֹצֵאתִ֙יךָ֙ (brought you) מֵא֣וּר (out of Ur) כַּשְׂדִּ֔ים (of the Chaldeans), לָ֧תֶת (to give) לְךָ֛ (to you) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֥רֶץ (the land) הַזֹּ֖את (this) לְרִשְׁתָּֽהּ׃ (to possess it).

God Confirms His Promise
(Numbers 34:1–15; Romans 4:13–25)

8  וַיֹּאמַ֑ר (And he said), אֲדֹנָ֣י (Lord) יֱהוִ֔ה (YHWH), בַּמָּ֥ה (by what) אֵדַ֖ע (shall I know) כִּ֥י (that) אִֽירָשֶֽׁנָּה׃ (I will possess it).

9  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And He said) אֵלָ֗יו (to him), קְחָ֥ה (Bring) לִי֙ (Me) עֶגְלָ֣ה (a heifer) מְשֻׁלֶּ֔שֶׁת (being three years old), וְעֵ֥ז (and a female goat) מְשֻׁלֶּ֖שֶׁת (being three years old), וְאַ֣יִל (and a ram) מְשֻׁלָּ֑שׁ (being three years old), וְתֹ֖ר (and a turtledove), וְגוֹזָֽל׃ (and a young pigeon).

10  וַיִּֽקַּֽח־ (And he brought) ל֣וֹ (to Him) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) אֵ֗לֶּה (these), וַיְבַתֵּ֤ר (and he cut in two) אֹתָם֙ (them) בַּתָּ֔וֶךְ (in the middle) וַיִּתֵּ֥ן (and placed) אִישׁ־ (each) בִּתְר֖וֹ (piece) לִקְרַ֣את (opposite) רֵעֵ֑הוּ (the other); וְאֶת־ (and) הַצִפֹּ֖ר (the bird) לֹ֥א (not) בָתָֽר׃ (he did cut in two). 11  וַיֵּ֥רֶד (And came down) הָעַ֖יִט (and the bird of prey) עַל־ (on) הַפְּגָרִ֑ים (the carcasses), וַיַּשֵּׁ֥ב (and drove away) אֹתָ֖ם (them) אַבְרָֽם׃ (Abram). 12  וַיְהִ֤י (And was) הַשֶּׁ֙מֶשׁ֙ (the sun) לָב֔וֹא (going down), וְתַרְדֵּמָ֖ה (and a deep sleep) נָפְלָ֣ה (fell) עַל־ (upon) אַבְרָ֑ם (Abram); וְהִנֵּ֥ה (and behold), אֵימָ֛ה (a terror) חֲשֵׁכָ֥ה (darkness) גְדֹלָ֖ה (of great) נֹפֶ֥לֶת (fell) עָלָֽיו׃ (upon him).

13  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And He said) לְאַבְרָ֗ם (to Abram), יָדֹ֨עַ (Knowing) תֵּדַ֜ע (you shall know) כִּי־ (that) גֵ֣ר׀ (a sojourner) יִהְיֶ֣ה (will be) זַרְעֲךָ֗ (your seed) בְּאֶ֙רֶץ֙ (in a land) לֹ֣א (not) לָהֶ֔ם (theirs), וַעֲבָד֖וּם (and they will serve them), וְעִנּ֣וּ (and they will afflict) אֹתָ֑ם (them) אַרְבַּ֥ע (four) מֵא֖וֹת (hundred) שָׁנָֽה׃ (years). 14  וְגַ֧ם (But) אֶת־ (-) הַגּ֛וֹי (the nation) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) יַעֲבֹ֖דוּ (they serve) דָּ֣ן (will judge) אָנֹ֑כִי (I), וְאַחֲרֵי־ (and after) כֵ֥ן (this) יֵצְא֖וּ (they shall come out) בִּרְכֻ֥שׁ (with possessions) גָּדֽוֹל׃ (great). 15  וְאַתָּ֛ה (And as for you), תָּב֥וֹא (you shall go) אֶל־ (to) אֲבֹתֶ֖יךָ (your fathers) בְּשָׁל֑וֹם (in peace); תִּקָּבֵ֖ר (you shall be buried) בְּשֵׂיבָ֥ה (at an old age) טוֹבָֽה׃ (good). 16  וְד֥וֹר (And the generation) רְבִיעִ֖י (fourth) יָשׁ֣וּבוּ (they shall return) הֵ֑נָּה (here), כִּ֧י (for) לֹא־ (not) שָׁלֵ֛ם (is complete) עֲוֺ֥ן (the iniquity) הָאֱמֹרִ֖י (of the Amorite) עַד־ (yet) הֵֽנָּה׃ (here).

17  וַיְהִ֤י (And it came to pass), הַשֶּׁ֙מֶשׁ֙ (when the sun) בָּ֔אָה (went down) וַעֲלָטָ֖ה (and dark) הָיָ֑ה (it was), וְהִנֵּ֨ה (and behold) תַנּ֤וּר (a firepot) עָשָׁן֙ (smoking) וְלַפִּ֣יד (and a torch) אֵ֔שׁ (burning) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָבַ֔ר (passed) בֵּ֖ין (between) הַגְּזָרִ֥ים (the pieces) הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ (these). 18  בַּיּ֣וֹם (On day) הַה֗וּא (that) כָּרַ֧ת (cut) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (with) אַבְרָ֖ם (Abram) בְּרִ֣ית (a covenant), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), לְזַרְעֲךָ֗ (To your seed) נָתַ֙תִּי֙ (I have given) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֣רֶץ (land) הַזֹּ֔את (this), מִנְּהַ֣ר (from the river) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt) עַד־ (to) הַנָּהָ֥ר (the river) הַגָּדֹ֖ל (great), נְהַר־ (the River) פְּרָֽת׃ (Euphrates), 19  אֶת־ (-) הַקֵּינִי֙ (with the Kenite), וְאֶת־ (and) הַקְּנִזִּ֔י (the Kenizzite), וְאֵ֖ת (and) הַקַּדְמֹנִֽי׃ (the Kadmonite), 20  וְאֶת־ (and) הַחִתִּ֥י (the Hittite), וְאֶת־ (and) הַפְּרִזִּ֖י (the Perizzite), וְאֶת־ (and) הָרְפָאִֽים׃ (the Rephaim), 21  וְאֶת־ (and) הָֽאֱמֹרִי֙ (the Amorite), וְאֶת־ (and) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔י (the Canaanite), וְאֶת־ (and) הַגִּרְגָּשִׁ֖י (the Girgashite), וְאֶת־ (and) הַיְבוּסִֽי׃ס (the Jebusite).
