Abraham to Father Many Nations

1  וַיְהִ֣י (And was) אַבְרָ֔ם (Abram) בֶּן־ (a son) תִּשְׁעִ֥ים (of ninety) שָׁנָ֖ה (years) וְתֵ֣שַׁע (and nine) שָׁנִ֑ים (years), וַיֵּרָ֨א (and appeared) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) אַבְרָ֗ם (Abram) וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (and said) אֵלָיו֙ (to him), אֲנִי־ (I am) אֵ֣ל (El-) שַׁדַּ֔י (Shaddai), הִתְהַלֵּ֥ךְ (walk) לְפָנַ֖י (before Me) וֶהְיֵ֥ה (and be) תָמִֽים׃ (blameless). 2  וְאֶתְּנָ֥ה (And I will make) בְרִיתִ֖י (My covenant) בֵּינִ֣י (between Me) וּבֵינֶ֑ךָ (and between you), וְאַרְבֶּ֥ה (and I will multiply) אוֹתְךָ֖ (you) בִּמְאֹ֥ד (greatly) מְאֹֽד׃ (greatly).

3  וַיִּפֹּ֥ל (And fell) אַבְרָ֖ם (Abram) עַל־ (on) פָּנָ֑יו (his face), וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (and spoke) אִתּ֛וֹ (with him) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 4  אֲנִ֕י (As for me)— הִנֵּ֥ה (behold), בְרִיתִ֖י (My covenant is) אִתָּ֑ךְ (with you), וְהָיִ֕יתָ (and you shall be) לְאַ֖ב (a father) הֲמ֥וֹן (of many) גּוֹיִֽם׃ (nations). 5  וְלֹא־ (And not) יִקָּרֵ֥א (shall be called) ע֛וֹד (anymore) אֶת־ (-) שִׁמְךָ֖ (your name) אַבְרָ֑ם (Abram), וְהָיָ֤ה (and shall be) שִׁמְךָ֙ (your name) אַבְרָהָ֔ם (Abraham). כִּ֛י (For) אַב־ (a father) הֲמ֥וֹן (of many) גּוֹיִ֖ם (nations) נְתַתִּֽיךָ׃ (I have made you).

6  וְהִפְרֵתִ֤י (And I will make fruitful) אֹֽתְךָ֙ (you) בִּמְאֹ֣ד (greatly) מְאֹ֔ד (greatly); וּנְתַתִּ֖יךָ (and I will make you) לְגוֹיִ֑ם (into nations), וּמְלָכִ֖ים (and kings) מִמְּךָ֥ (from you) יֵצֵֽאוּ׃ (shall come out).

7  וַהֲקִמֹתִ֨י (And I will establish) אֶת־ (-) בְּרִיתִ֜י (My covenant) בֵּינִ֣י (between Me) וּבֵינֶ֗ךָ (and between you) וּבֵ֨ין (and between) זַרְעֲךָ֧ (your seed) אַחֲרֶ֛יךָ (after you) לְדֹרֹתָ֖ם (throughout their generations). לִבְרִ֣ית (For a covenant) עוֹלָ֑ם (everlasting) לִהְי֤וֹת (to be) לְךָ֙ (to you) לֵֽאלֹהִ֔ים (God), וּֽלְזַרְעֲךָ֖ (and your seed) אַחֲרֶֽיךָ׃ (after you).

8  וְנָתַתִּ֣י (And I give) לְ֠ךָ (to you) וּלְזַרְעֲךָ֨ (and your seed) אַחֲרֶ֜יךָ (after you) אֵ֣ת׀ (-) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) מְגֻרֶ֗יךָ (in which you are a sojourner) אֵ֚ת (-), כָּל־ (all) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) כְּנַ֔עַן (of Canaan), לַאֲחֻזַּ֖ת (as a possession) עוֹלָ֑ם (everlasting); וְהָיִ֥יתִי (and I will be) לָהֶ֖ם (their) לֵאלֹהִֽים׃ (God).

The Covenant of Circumcision

9  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God) אֶל־ (to) אַבְרָהָ֔ם (Abraham), וְאַתָּ֖ה (And as for you) אֶת־ (-) בְּרִיתִ֣י (My covenant) תִשְׁמֹ֑ר (you shall keep)— אַתָּ֛ה (you) וְזַרְעֲךָ֥ (and your seed) אַֽחֲרֶ֖יךָ (after you) לְדֹרֹתָֽם׃ (throughout their generations). 10  זֹ֣את (This is) בְּרִיתִ֞י (My covenant), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (which) תִּשְׁמְר֗וּ (you⁺ shall keep) בֵּינִי֙ (between Me) וּבֵ֣ינֵיכֶ֔ם (and between you⁺) וּבֵ֥ין (and between) זַרְעֲךָ֖ (your seed) אַחֲרֶ֑יךָ (after you). הִמּ֥וֹל (Shall be circumcised) לָכֶ֖ם (among you⁺) כָּל־ (every) זָכָֽר׃ (male child). 11  וּנְמַלְתֶּ֕ם (And you⁺ shall be circumcised) אֵ֖ת (-) בְּשַׂ֣ר (in the flesh) עָרְלַתְכֶ֑ם (of your⁺ foreskins); וְהָיָה֙ (and it shall be) לְא֣וֹת (a sign) בְּרִ֔ית (of the covenant) בֵּינִ֖י (between Me) וּבֵינֵיכֶֽם׃ (and between you⁺).

12  וּבֶן־ (And a son) שְׁמֹנַ֣ת (of eight) יָמִ֗ים (days) יִמּ֥וֹל (shall be circumcised), לָכֶ֛ם (among you⁺) כָּל־ (every) זָכָ֖ר (male child) לְדֹרֹתֵיכֶ֑ם (in your⁺ generations), יְלִ֣יד (he who is born in) בָּ֔יִת (your house) וּמִקְנַת־ (or bought) כֶּ֙סֶף֙ (with silver) מִכֹּ֣ל (from any) בֶּן־ (son) נֵכָ֔ר (of a foreigner), אֲשֶׁ֛ר (who) לֹ֥א (not) מִֽזַּרְעֲךָ֖ (of your seed) הֽוּא׃ (is). 13  הִמּ֧וֹל׀ (Being circumcised) יִמּ֛וֹל (he must be circumcised)— יְלִ֥יד (he who is born) בֵּֽיתְךָ֖ (in your house) וּמִקְנַ֣ת (and he who is bought with) כַּסְפֶּ֑ךָ (your silver), וְהָיְתָ֧ה (and shall be) בְרִיתִ֛י (My covenant) בִּבְשַׂרְכֶ֖ם (in your⁺ flesh) לִבְרִ֥ית (for a covenant) עוֹלָֽם׃ (everlasting).

14  וְעָרֵ֣ל׀ (And the uncircumcised) זָכָ֗ר (male child) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (who) לֹֽא־ (not) יִמּוֹל֙ (is circumcised) אֶת־ (-) בְּשַׂ֣ר (in the flesh) עָרְלָת֔וֹ (of his foreskin), וְנִכְרְתָ֛ה (and shall be cut off) הַנֶּ֥פֶשׁ (the soul) הַהִ֖וא (that one) מֵעַמֶּ֑יהָ (from his people); אֶת־ (-) בְּרִיתִ֖י (My covenant) הֵפַֽר׃ס (he has broken).

15  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God) אֶל־ (to) אַבְרָהָ֔ם (Abraham), שָׂרַ֣י (As for Sarai) אִשְׁתְּךָ֔ (your wife), לֹא־ (not) תִקְרָ֥א (you shall call) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמָ֖הּ (her name) שָׂרָ֑י (Sarai), כִּ֥י (but) שָׂרָ֖ה (Sarah) שְׁמָֽהּ׃ (is her name). 16  וּבֵרַכְתִּ֣י (And I will bless) אֹתָ֔הּ (her) וְגַ֨ם (and also) נָתַ֧תִּי (have given) מִמֶּ֛נָּה (by her) לְךָ֖ (to you) בֵּ֑ן (a son); וּבֵֽרַכְתִּ֙יהָ֙ (and I have blessed her) וְהָֽיְתָ֣ה (and she has become) לְגוֹיִ֔ם (nations); מַלְכֵ֥י (kings) עַמִּ֖ים (of peoples) מִמֶּ֥נָּה (from her) יִהְיֽוּ׃ (shall come).

17  וַיִּפֹּ֧ל (And fell) אַבְרָהָ֛ם (Abraham) עַל־ (on) פָּנָ֖יו (his face), וַיִּצְחָ֑ק (and he laughed), וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and he said) בְּלִבּ֗וֹ (in his heart), הַלְּבֶ֤ן (To a son) מֵאָֽה־ (of a hundred) שָׁנָה֙ (years) יִוָּלֵ֔ד (shall a child be born)? וְאִ֨ם־ (Or shall) שָׂרָ֔ה (Sarah), הֲבַת־ (a daughter) תִּשְׁעִ֥ים (of ninety) שָׁנָ֖ה (years), תֵּלֵֽד׃ (bear)? 18  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) אַבְרָהָ֖ם (Abraham) אֶל־ (to) הָֽאֱלֹהִ֑ים (God), ל֥וּ (O that) יִשְׁמָעֵ֖אל (Ishmael) יִחְיֶ֥ה (might live) לְפָנֶֽיךָ׃ (before You)!

19  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) אֱלֹהִ֗ים (God), אֲבָל֙ (Surely) שָׂרָ֣ה (Sarah) אִשְׁתְּךָ֗ (your wife) יֹלֶ֤דֶת (will bear) לְךָ֙ (to you) בֵּ֔ן (a son), וְקָרָ֥אתָ (and you shall call) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמ֖וֹ (his name) יִצְחָ֑ק (Isaac); וַהֲקִמֹתִ֨י (and I will establish) אֶת־ (-) בְּרִיתִ֥י (My covenant) אִתּ֛וֹ (with him) לִבְרִ֥ית (for a covenant) עוֹלָ֖ם (everlasting) לְזַרְע֥וֹ (for his seed) אַחֲרָֽיו׃ (after him). 20  וּֽלְיִשְׁמָעֵ֘אל (And as for Ishmael), שְׁמַעְתִּיךָ֒ (I have heard you). הִנֵּ֣ה׀ (Behold), בֵּרַ֣כְתִּי (I have blessed) אֹת֗וֹ (him) וְהִפְרֵיתִ֥י (and I will make fruitful) אֹת֛וֹ (him) וְהִרְבֵּיתִ֥י (and will multiply) אֹת֖וֹ (him) בִּמְאֹ֣ד (greatly) מְאֹ֑ד (greatly); שְׁנֵים־ (two) עָשָׂ֤ר (and ten) נְשִׂיאִם֙ (princes) יוֹלִ֔יד (He shall beget), וּנְתַתִּ֖יו (and I will make him) לְג֥וֹי (into a nation) גָּדֽוֹל׃ (great). 21  וְאֶת־ (And) בְּרִיתִ֖י (My covenant) אָקִ֣ים (I will establish) אֶת־ (with) יִצְחָ֑ק (Isaac), אֲשֶׁר֩ (whom) תֵּלֵ֨ד (shall bear) לְךָ֤ (to you) שָׂרָה֙ (Sarah) לַמּוֹעֵ֣ד (appointed time) הַזֶּ֔ה (this) בַּשָּׁנָ֖ה (in the year) הָאַחֶֽרֶת׃ (the next).

22  וַיְכַ֖ל (And He finished) לְדַבֵּ֣ר (speaking) אִתּ֑וֹ (with him); וַיַּ֣עַל (and went up) אֱלֹהִ֔ים (God) מֵעַ֖ל (from) אַבְרָהָֽם׃ (Abraham).

23  וַיִּקַּ֨ח (And took) אַבְרָהָ֜ם (Abraham) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׁמָעֵ֣אל (Ishmael) בְּנ֗וֹ (his son), וְאֵ֨ת (and) כָּל־ (all) יְלִידֵ֤י (who were born in) בֵיתוֹ֙ (his house), וְאֵת֙ (and) כָּל־ (all) מִקְנַ֣ת (who were bought with) כַּסְפּ֔וֹ (his silver)— כָּל־ (every) זָכָ֕ר (male) בְּאַנְשֵׁ֖י (among the men) בֵּ֣ית (in the house) אַבְרָהָ֑ם (of Abraham)— וַיָּ֜מָל (and he circumcised) אֶת־ (-) בְּשַׂ֣ר (the flesh) עָרְלָתָ֗ם (of their foreskins) בְּעֶ֙צֶם֙ (in the very) הַיּ֣וֹם (day) הַזֶּ֔ה (on that), כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר (as) דִּבֶּ֥ר (had spoken) אִתּ֖וֹ (with him) אֱלֹהִֽים׃ (God).

24  וְאַ֨בְרָהָ֔ם (And Abraham) בֶּן־ (was a son) תִּשְׁעִ֥ים (of ninety) וָתֵ֖שַׁע (and nine) שָׁנָ֑ה (years) בְּהִמֹּל֖וֹ (when he was circumcised) בְּשַׂ֥ר (in the flesh) עָרְלָתֽוֹ׃ (of his foreskin). 25  וְיִשְׁמָעֵ֣אל (And Ishmael) בְּנ֔וֹ (his son) בֶּן־ (was a son) שְׁלֹ֥שׁ (of three) עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה (and ten) שָׁנָ֑ה (years) בְּהִ֨מֹּל֔וֹ (when he was circumcised) אֵ֖ת (-) בְּשַׂ֥ר (in the flesh) עָרְלָתֽוֹ׃ (of his foreskin). 26  בְּעֶ֙צֶם֙ (In the very) הַיּ֣וֹם (day) הַזֶּ֔ה (on that) נִמּ֖וֹל (was circumcised) אַבְרָהָ֑ם (Abraham) וְיִשְׁמָעֵ֖אל (and Ishmael) בְּנֽוֹ׃ (his son). 27  וְכָל־ (And all) אַנְשֵׁ֤י (the men) בֵיתוֹ֙ (of his house) יְלִ֣יד (born in) בָּ֔יִת (the house) וּמִקְנַת־ (or bought with) כֶּ֖סֶף (silver) מֵאֵ֣ת (from) בֶּן־ (son) נֵכָ֑ר (a foreigner) נִמֹּ֖לוּ (were circumcised) אִתּֽוֹ׃פ (with him).
