The Jews Destroy Their Enemies

1  וּבִשְׁנֵים֩ (And in the two) עָשָׂ֨ר (and tenth) חֹ֜דֶשׁ (month), הוּא־ (it is) חֹ֣דֶשׁ (the month) אֲדָ֗ר (of Adar)), בִּשְׁלוֹשָׁ֨ה (on the three) עָשָׂ֥ר (and tenth) יוֹם֙ (day) בּ֔וֹ (in it), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (on which) הִגִּ֧יעַ (had reached) דְּבַר־ (the word) הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ (of the king) וְדָת֖וֹ (and his decree) לְהֵעָשׂ֑וֹת (to be done), בַּיּ֗וֹם (in the day) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) שִׂבְּר֜וּ (had awaited) אֹיְבֵ֤י (the enemies) הַיְּהוּדִים֙ (of the Jews) לִשְׁל֣וֹט (to gain power) בָּהֶ֔ם (over them), וְנַהֲפ֣וֹךְ (and was overturned) ה֔וּא (this), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) יִשְׁלְט֧וּ (gained power) הַיְּהוּדִ֛ים (the Jews) הֵ֖מָּה (themselves) בְּשֹׂנְאֵיהֶֽם׃ (over those hating them). 2  נִקְהֲל֨וּ (Gathered together) הַיְּהוּדִ֜ים (the Jews) בְּעָרֵיהֶ֗ם (in their cities) בְּכָל־ (in all) מְדִינוֹת֙ (of the provinces) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (of King) אֳחַשְׁוֵר֔וֹשׁ (Ahasuerus), לִשְׁלֹ֣חַ (to stretch out) יָ֔ד (a hand) בִּמְבַקְשֵׁ֖י (against those seeking) רָֽעָתָ֑ם (their evil). וְאִישׁ֙ (And man) לֹא־ (none) עָמַ֣ד (could stand) לִפְנֵיהֶ֔ם (before their faces), כִּֽי־ (because) נָפַ֥ל (had fallen) פַּחְדָּ֖ם (the fear of them) עַל־ (upon) כָּל־ (all) הָעַמִּֽים׃ (the peoples).

3  וְכָל־ (And all) שָׂרֵ֨י (the officials) הַמְּדִינ֜וֹת (of the provinces), וְהָאֲחַשְׁדַּרְפְּנִ֣ים (and the satraps), וְהַפַּח֗וֹת (and the governors), וְעֹשֵׂ֤י (and those doing) הַמְּלָאכָה֙ (the work) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that were) לַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (to the king), מְנַשְּׂאִ֖ים (were lifting up) אֶת־ (-) הַיְּהוּדִ֑ים (the Jews), כִּֽי־ (because) נָפַ֥ל (had fallen) פַּֽחַד־ (the fear) מָרְדֳּכַ֖י (of Mordecai) עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ (upon them). 4  כִּֽי־ (For) גָ֤דוֹל (was great) מָרְדֳּכַי֙ (Mordecai) בְּבֵ֣ית (in the house) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (of the king), וְשָׁמְע֖וֹ (and the report of him) הוֹלֵ֣ךְ (went forth) בְּכָל־ (in all) הַמְּדִינ֑וֹת (the provinces), כִּֽי־ (for) הָאִ֥ישׁ (the man) מָרְדֳּכַ֖י (Mordecai) הוֹלֵ֥ךְ (was going on) וְגָדֽוֹל׃פ (and becoming great).

5  וַיַּכּ֤וּ (And struck) הַיְּהוּדִים֙ (the Jews) בְּכָל־ (in all) אֹ֣יְבֵיהֶ֔ם (their enemies) מַכַּת־ (a blow) חֶ֥רֶב (of the sword), וְהֶ֖רֶג (and slaughter), וְאַבְדָ֑ן (and destruction), וַיַּֽעֲשׂ֥וּ (and they did) בְשֹׂנְאֵיהֶ֖ם (to those hating them) כִּרְצוֹנָֽם׃ (according to their pleasure). 6  וּבְשׁוּשַׁ֣ן (And in Susa) הַבִּירָ֗ה (the citadel) הָרְג֤וּ (killed) הַיְּהוּדִים֙ (the Jews) וְאַבֵּ֔ד (and destroyed) חֲמֵ֥שׁ (five) מֵא֖וֹת (hundred) אִֽישׁ׃ (men). 7  וְאֵ֧ת׀ (And) פַּרְשַׁנְדָּ֛תָא (Parshandatha), וְאֵ֥ת׀ (and) דַּֽלְפ֖וֹן (Dalphon), וְאֵ֥ת׀ (and) אַסְפָּֽתָא׃ (Aspatha), 8  וְאֵ֧ת׀ (and) פּוֹרָ֛תָא (Poratha), וְאֵ֥ת׀ (and) אֲדַלְיָ֖א (Adalia), וְאֵ֥ת׀ (and) אֲרִידָֽתָא׃ (Aridatha), 9  וְאֵ֤ת׀ (and) פַּרְמַ֙שְׁתָּא֙ (Parmashta), וְאֵ֣ת׀ (and) אֲרִיסַ֔י (Arisai), וְאֵ֥ת׀ (and) אֲרִדַ֖י (Aridai), וְאֵ֥ת׀ (and) וַיְזָֽתָא׃ (Vaizatha), 10  עֲ֠שֶׂרֶת (ten) בְּנֵ֨י (sons) הָמָ֧ן (of Haman) בֶּֽן־ (son) הַמְּדָ֛תָא (of Hammedatha), צֹרֵ֥ר (the enemy) הַיְּהוּדִ֖ים (of the Jews), הָרָ֑גוּ (they killed). וּבַ֨בִּזָּ֔ה (And on the plunder) לֹ֥א (not) שָׁלְח֖וּ (did they stretch out) אֶת־ (-) יָדָֽם׃ (their hand).

Haman’s Sons Hanged

11  בַּיּ֣וֹם (In the day) הַה֗וּא (that) בָּ֣א (was brought) מִסְפַּ֧ר (the number) הַֽהֲרוּגִ֛ים (of the slain) בְּשׁוּשַׁ֥ן (in Susa) הַבִּירָ֖ה (the citadel) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ס (of the king). 12  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ (the king) לְאֶסְתֵּ֣ר (to Esther) הַמַּלְכָּ֗ה (the queen), בְּשׁוּשַׁ֣ן (In Susa) הַבִּירָ֡ה (the citadel) הָרְגוּ֩ (have killed) הַיְּהוּדִ֨ים (the Jews) וְאַבֵּ֜ד (and destroyed) חֲמֵ֧שׁ (five) מֵא֣וֹת (hundred) אִ֗ישׁ (men), וְאֵת֙ (and) עֲשֶׂ֣רֶת (ten) בְּנֵֽי־ (sons) הָמָ֔ן (of Haman). בִּשְׁאָ֛ר (In the rest) מְדִינ֥וֹת (of the provinces) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (of the king) מֶ֣ה (what) עָשׂ֑וּ (have they done)? וּמַה־ (And what is) שְּׁאֵֽלָתֵךְ֙ (your petition)? וְיִנָּ֣תֵֽן (And it will be given) לָ֔ךְ (to you). וּמַה־ (And what is) בַּקָּשָׁתֵ֥ךְ (your request) ע֖וֹד (again)? וְתֵעָֽשׂ׃ (And it will be done).

13  וַתֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) אֶסְתֵּר֙ (Esther), אִם־ (If) עַל־ (upon) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (the king) ט֔וֹב (it is good), יִנָּתֵ֣ן (let it be given) גַּם־ (also) מָחָ֗ר (tomorrow) לַיְּהוּדִים֙ (to the Jews) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) בְּשׁוּשָׁ֔ן (are in Susa) לַעֲשׂ֖וֹת (to do) כְּדָ֣ת (according to the law) הַיּ֑וֹם (of today). וְאֵ֛ת (And) עֲשֶׂ֥רֶת (ten) בְּנֵֽי־ (sons) הָמָ֖ן (of Haman) יִתְל֥וּ (let them be hanged) עַל־ (on) הָעֵֽץ׃ (the tree).

14  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (the king) לְהֵֽעָשׂ֣וֹת (to do) כֵּ֔ן (so), וַתִּנָּתֵ֥ן (and was given) דָּ֖ת (the law) בְּשׁוּשָׁ֑ן (in Susa), וְאֵ֛ת (and) עֲשֶׂ֥רֶת (ten) בְּנֵֽי־ (sons) הָמָ֖ן (of Haman) תָּלֽוּ׃ (they hanged). 15  וַיִּֽקָּהֲל֞וּ (And gathered together) הַיְּהוּדִיִּים (the Jews) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) בְּשׁוּשָׁ֗ן (were in Susa) גַּ֠ם (again) בְּי֣וֹם (on day) אַרְבָּעָ֤ה (four) עָשָׂר֙ (and ten) לְחֹ֣דֶשׁ (of the month) אֲדָ֔ר (of Adar), וַיַּֽהַרְג֣וּ (and they killed) בְשׁוּשָׁ֔ן (in Susa) שְׁלֹ֥שׁ (three) מֵא֖וֹת (hundred) אִ֑ישׁ (men), וּבַ֨בִּזָּ֔ה (and on the plunder) לֹ֥א (not) שָׁלְח֖וּ (did they stretch out) אֶת־ (-) יָדָֽם׃ (their hand).

16  וּשְׁאָ֣ר (And the rest) הַיְּהוּדִ֡ים (of the Jews) אֲשֶׁר֩ (who were) בִּמְדִינ֨וֹת (in the provinces) הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ (of the king) נִקְהֲל֣וּ׀ (gathered together), וְעָמֹ֣ד (and stood) עַל־ (for) נַפְשָׁ֗ם (their soul), וְנ֙וֹחַ֙ (and they had rest) מֵאֹ֣יְבֵיהֶ֔ם (from their enemies). וְהָרֹג֙ (And they killed) בְּשֹׂ֣נְאֵיהֶ֔ם (of those hating them) חֲמִשָּׁ֥ה (five) וְשִׁבְעִ֖ים (and seventy) אָ֑לֶף (thousand), וּבַ֨בִּזָּ֔ה (and on the plunder) לֹ֥א (not) שָֽׁלְח֖וּ (did they stretch out) אֶת־ (-) יָדָֽם׃ (their hand). 17  בְּיוֹם־ (On day) שְׁלֹשָׁ֥ה (three) עָשָׂ֖ר (and ten) לְחֹ֣דֶשׁ (of the month) אֲדָ֑ר (of Adar), וְנ֗וֹחַ (and they rested) בְּאַרְבָּעָ֤ה (on the four) עָשָׂר֙ (and tenth) בּ֔וֹ (of it), וְעָשֹׂ֣ה (and they made) אֹת֔וֹ (it) י֖וֹם (a day) מִשְׁתֶּ֥ה (of feasting) וְשִׂמְחָֽה׃ (and joy).

The Feast of Purim Instituted

18  וְהַיְּהוּדִיִּים (And the Jews) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) בְּשׁוּשָׁ֗ן (were in Susa) נִקְהֲלוּ֙ (assembled) בִּשְׁלֹשָׁ֤ה (on the three) עָשָׂר֙ (and tenth) בּ֔וֹ (of it) וּבְאַרְבָּעָ֥ה (and on the four) עָשָׂ֖ר (and tenth) בּ֑וֹ (of it), וְנ֗וֹחַ (and they rested) בַּחֲמִשָּׁ֤ה (on the five) עָשָׂר֙ (and tenth) בּ֔וֹ (of it) וְעָשֹׂ֣ה (and they made) אֹת֔וֹ (it) י֖וֹם (a day) מִשְׁתֶּ֥ה (of feasting) וְשִׂמְחָֽה׃ (and joy). 19  עַל־ (Upon) כֵּ֞ן (thus) הַיְּהוּדִ֣ים (the Jews) הַפְּרוֹזִים (of the villages) הַיֹּשְׁבִים֮ (the ones dwelling) בְּעָרֵ֣י (in the cities) הַפְּרָזוֹת֒ (of the open country) עֹשִׂ֗ים (were making) אֵ֠ת (-) י֣וֹם (day) אַרְבָּעָ֤ה (the four) עָשָׂר֙ (and tenth) לְחֹ֣דֶשׁ (of the month) אֲדָ֔ר (of Adar) שִׂמְחָ֥ה (for joy) וּמִשְׁתֶּ֖ה (and feasting), וְי֣וֹם (and a day) ט֑וֹב (good) וּמִשְׁל֥וֹחַ (and sending) מָנ֖וֹת (portions) אִ֥ישׁ (each man) לְרֵעֵֽהוּ׃פ (to his neighbor).

20  וַיִּכְתֹּ֣ב (And wrote) מָרְדֳּכַ֔י (Mordecai) אֶת־ (-) הַדְּבָרִ֖ים (the words) הָאֵ֑לֶּה (these) וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח (and he sent) סְפָרִ֜ים (letters) אֶל־ (to) כָּל־ (all) הַיְּהוּדִ֗ים (the Jews) אֲשֶׁר֙ (who) בְּכָל־ (were in all) מְדִינוֹת֙ (the provinces) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (of King) אֲחַשְׁוֵר֔וֹשׁ (Ahasuerus), הַקְּרוֹבִ֖ים (those near) וְהָרְחוֹקִֽים׃ (and those far beyond), 21  לְקַיֵּם֮ (to establish) עֲלֵיהֶם֒ (for them) לִהְי֣וֹת (to be) עֹשִׂ֗ים (keeping) אֵ֠ת (-) י֣וֹם (the day) אַרְבָּעָ֤ה (four) עָשָׂר֙ (and tenth) לְחֹ֣דֶשׁ (of the month) אֲדָ֔ר (of Adar), וְאֵ֛ת (and) יוֹם־ (the day) חֲמִשָּׁ֥ה (five) עָשָׂ֖ר (and tenth) בּ֑וֹ (of it) בְּכָל־ (in every) שָׁנָ֖ה (year) וְשָׁנָֽה׃ (and year). 22  כַּיָּמִ֗ים (As the days) אֲשֶׁר־ (on which) נָ֨חוּ (had rest) בָהֶ֤ם (on them) הַיְּהוּדִים֙ (the Jews) מֵא֣וֹיְבֵיהֶ֔ם (from their enemies), וְהַחֹ֗דֶשׁ (and the month) אֲשֶׁר֩ (that) נֶהְפַּ֨ךְ (was turned) לָהֶ֤ם (for them) מִיָּגוֹן֙ (from sorrow) לְשִׂמְחָ֔ה (to joy) וּמֵאֵ֖בֶל (and from mourning) לְי֣וֹם (to a day) ט֑וֹב (good) לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת (to make) אוֹתָ֗ם (them) יְמֵי֙ (days) מִשְׁתֶּ֣ה (of feasting) וְשִׂמְחָ֔ה (and joy), וּמִשְׁל֤וֹחַ (and for sending) מָנוֹת֙ (portions) אִ֣ישׁ (each man) לְרֵעֵ֔הוּ (to his neighbor), וּמַתָּנ֖וֹת (and gifts) לָֽאֶבְיוֹנִֽים׃ (to the needy).

23  וְקִבֵּל֙ (And received) הַיְּהוּדִ֔ים (the Jews) אֵ֥ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (that which) הֵחֵ֖לּוּ (they had begun) לַעֲשׂ֑וֹת (to do), וְאֵ֛ת (and) אֲשֶׁר־ (what) כָּתַ֥ב (wrote) מָרְדֳּכַ֖י (Mordecai) אֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ (to them), 24  כִּי֩ (for) הָמָ֨ן (Haman) בֶּֽן־ (son) הַמְּדָ֜תָא (of Hammedatha) הָֽאֲגָגִ֗י (the Agagite), צֹרֵר֙ (the enemy) כָּל־ (of all) הַיְּהוּדִ֔ים (the Jews), חָשַׁ֥ב (had plotted) עַל־ (against) הַיְּהוּדִ֖ים (the Jews) לְאַבְּדָ֑ם (to destroy them) וְהִפִּ֥יל (and had caused to fall) פּוּר֙ (Pur) ה֣וּא (that is) הַגּוֹרָ֔ל (the lot)) לְהֻמָּ֖ם (to throw them into confusion) וּֽלְאַבְּדָֽם׃ (and to destroy them). 25  וּבְבֹאָהּ֮ (And when she came in) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) הַמֶּלֶךְ֒ (the king), אָמַ֣ר (he said) עִם־ (with) הַסֵּ֔פֶר (the letter) יָשׁ֞וּב (that should return) מַחֲשַׁבְתּ֧וֹ (his plot), הָרָעָ֛ה (evil) אֲשֶׁר־ (which) חָשַׁ֥ב (he had plotted) עַל־ (against) הַיְּהוּדִ֖ים (the Jews), עַל־ (back upon) רֹאשׁ֑וֹ (his own head), וְתָל֥וּ (and that should be hanged) אֹת֛וֹ (he) וְאֶת־ (and) בָּנָ֖יו (his sons) עַל־ (on) הָעֵֽץ׃ (the tree).

26  עַל־ (Upon) כֵּ֡ן (thus) קָֽרְאוּ֩ (they called) לַיָּמִ֨ים (the days) הָאֵ֤לֶּה (these) פוּרִים֙ (Purim) עַל־ (on account) שֵׁ֣ם (of the name) הַפּ֔וּר (Pur).

עַל־ (Upon) כֵּ֕ן (thus) עַל־ (on account) כָּל־ (of all) דִּבְרֵ֖י (the words) הָאִגֶּ֣רֶת (of the letter), הַזֹּ֑את (this) וּמָֽה־ (and what) רָא֣וּ (they had seen) עַל־ (concerning) כָּ֔כָה (this matter) וּמָ֥ה (and what) הִגִּ֖יעַ (had come) אֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ (to them). 27  קִיְּמ֣וּ (Established) וְקִבֵּל (and received it) הַיְּהוּדִים֩׀ (the Jews) עֲלֵיהֶ֨ם׀ (upon themselves) וְעַל־ (and upon) זַרְעָ֜ם (their seed) וְעַ֨ל (and upon) כָּל־ (all) הַנִּלְוִ֤ים (those joining) עֲלֵיהֶם֙ (upon them), וְלֹ֣א (and not) יַעֲב֔וֹר (shall it pass away) לִהְי֣וֹת (to be) עֹשִׂ֗ים (keeping) אֵ֣ת (-) שְׁנֵ֤י (two) הַיָּמִים֙ (days) הָאֵ֔לֶּה (these) כִּכְתָבָ֖ם (according to their writing) וְכִזְמַנָּ֑ם (and according to their appointed time) בְּכָל־ (in every) שָׁנָ֖ה (year) וְשָׁנָֽה׃ (and year), 28  וְהַיָּמִ֣ים (and the days) הָ֠אֵלֶּה (these) נִזְכָּרִ֨ים (shall be remembered) וְנַעֲשִׂ֜ים (and kept) בְּכָל־ (in every) דּ֣וֹר (generation) וָד֗וֹר (and generation), מִשְׁפָּחָה֙ (family) וּמִשְׁפָּחָ֔ה (and by family), מְדִינָ֥ה (province) וּמְדִינָ֖ה (and by province), וְעִ֣יר (and city) וָעִ֑יר (and by city), וִימֵ֞י (and the days) הַפּוּרִ֣ים (of Purim) הָאֵ֗לֶּה (these) לֹ֤א (not) יַֽעַבְרוּ֙ (shall they pass away) מִתּ֣וֹךְ (from the midst) הַיְּהוּדִ֔ים (of the Jews), וְזִכְרָ֖ם (and their remembrance) לֹא־ (not) יָס֥וּף (shall cease) מִזַּרְעָֽם׃ס (among their seed).

29  וַ֠תִּכְתֹּב (And wrote) אֶסְתֵּ֨ר (Esther) הַמַּלְכָּ֧ה (the queen), בַת־ (daughter) אֲבִיחַ֛יִל (of Abihail), וּמָרְדֳּכַ֥י (and Mordecai) הַיְּהוּדִ֖י (the Jew) אֶת־ (with) כָּל־ (full) תֹּ֑קֶף (authority), לְקַיֵּ֗ם (to establish) אֵ֣ת (-) אִגֶּ֧רֶת (letter) הַפּוּרִ֛ים (of Purim), הַזֹּ֖את (this) הַשֵּׁנִֽית׃ (second). 30  וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח (And he sent) סְפָרִ֜ים (letters) אֶל־ (to) כָּל־ (all) הַיְּהוּדִ֗ים (the Jews), אֶל־ (to) שֶׁ֨בַע (the seven) וְעֶשְׂרִ֤ים (and twenty) וּמֵאָה֙ (and a hundred) מְדִינָ֔ה (provinces) מַלְכ֖וּת (of the kingdom) אֲחַשְׁוֵר֑וֹשׁ (of Ahasuerus), דִּבְרֵ֥י (with words) שָׁל֖וֹם (of peace) וֶאֱמֶֽת׃ (and truth), 31  לְקַיֵּ֡ם (to establish) אֵת־ (-) יְמֵי֩ (the days) הַפֻּרִ֨ים (of Purim) הָאֵ֜לֶּה (these) בִּזְמַנֵּיהֶ֗ם (in their appointed times) כַּאֲשֶׁר֩ (as) קִיַּ֨ם (established) עֲלֵיהֶ֜ם (upon them) מָרְדֳּכַ֤י (Mordecai) הַיְּהוּדִי֙ (the Jew) וְאֶסְתֵּ֣ר (and Esther) הַמַּלְכָּ֔ה (the queen), וְכַאֲשֶׁ֛ר (and as) קִיְּמ֥וּ (they established) עַל־ (upon) נַפְשָׁ֖ם (their souls) וְעַל־ (and upon) זַרְעָ֑ם (their seed) דִּבְרֵ֥י (the matters) הַצֹּמ֖וֹת (of the fasts) וְזַעֲקָתָֽם׃ (and their outcry).

32  וּמַאֲמַ֣ר (And the command) אֶסְתֵּ֔ר (of Esther) קִיַּ֕ם (established) דִּבְרֵ֥י (the matters) הַפֻּרִ֖ים (of Purim) הָאֵ֑לֶּה (these), וְנִכְתָּ֖ב (and it was written) בַּסֵּֽפֶר׃פ (in the book).
