And He went out from there and came to His hometown, and His disciples follow Him.

And on the Sabbath having come, He began to teach in the synagogue; and many hearing were astonished, saying, “From where to this man are these things, and what is the wisdom having been given to Him, and the miracles such as are done by His hands?

Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?” And they were taking offense at Him.

And Jesus was saying to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his house.”

And He was not able to do there any miracle except, having laid the hands on a few of the sick, He healed them.

And He marveled because of their unbelief. And He was going around the villages, teaching.

And He summons the Twelve, and He began to send them forth two by two, and He was giving to them authority over the unclean spirits.

And He instructed them that they may take nothing for the way, except only a staff—no bread, no bag, no copper in the belt—

but to wear sandals, and you? may not put on two tunics.

And He was saying to them, “Wherever you? may enter into a house, remain there until you? may go out from there.

And whatever place may not receive you? nor hear you?, going out from there, shake off the dust that is under your? feet, as a testimony against them.”

And having gone out, they preached that they should repent.

And they were casting out many demons, and they were anointing many sick with oil and healing them.

And King Herod heard; for His name became well known, And they were saying, “John, the one baptizing, has been raised out from the dead. And because of this, the miraculous powers are working in him.”

But others were saying, “He is Elijah,” and others were saying, “A prophet, like one of the prophets.”

And having heard, Herod was saying, “John, whom I beheaded—this one was raised!”

For Herod himself, having sent, seized John and bound him in prison because of Herodias, the wife of Philip his brother, because he married her.

For John was saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have the wife of your brother.”

And Herodias was holding it against him and was wanting to kill him, and she was not able.

For Herod was afraid of John, knowing him as a man righteous and holy, and he was keeping him safe. And having heard him, he was much perplexed and heard him gladly.

And an opportune day having come, when Herod on his birthday made a banquet to his great men, and to the commanders, and to the first men of Galilee,

and the daughter of Herodias herself, having entered and having danced, pleased Herod and those reclining with him. And the king said to the girl, “Ask me whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.”

And he swore to her much, “Whatever, you might ask me, I will give to you, up to half of my kingdom!”

And having gone out, she said to her mother, “What shall I ask?” And she said, “The head of John, the one baptizing.”

And having entered immediately with haste to the king, she asked, saying, “I want that at once you might give to me upon a platter the head of John the Baptist.”

And the king, having been made very sorrowful because of the oaths and those reclining, did not want to set her aside.

And immediately the king, having sent an executioner, commanded to be brought his head. And having gone away, he beheaded him in the prison

and brought his head upon a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.

And having heard of it, his disciples came and took up his body and laid it in a tomb.

And the apostles are gathered together to Jesus, and they reported to Him all things, as much as they did and as much as they taught.

And He said to them, “Come, you? yourselves, apart to a wilderness place, and rest a little.” For those coming and those going were many, and not even were they having opportunity to eat.

And they went away in the boat to a wilderness place by themselves.

And many saw them going and recognized, and they ran together there on foot from all the cities and went before them.

And having gone out, He saw a great crowd and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. And He began to teach them many things.

And the hour already being late, having come to Him, His disciples were saying, “The place is a wilderness, and the hour already is late.

Dismiss them so that, having gone to the surrounding fields and villages, they might buy for themselves something to eat.”

But answering, He said to them, “You? give to them to eat.” And they say to Him, “Having gone away, shall we buy two hundred denarii of loaves and give them to eat?”

And He says to them, “How many loaves do you? have? Go, see.” And having known, they say, “Five, and two fish.”

And He commanded them to make them all recline, groups by groups, on the green grass.

And they sat down groups by groups, by hundreds and by fifties.

And having taken the five loaves and the two fish, having looked up to the heaven, He blessed and broke the loaves. And He was giving them to His disciples, so that they might set before them. And He divided the two fish among all.

And all ate and were satisfied.

And they took up twelve hand-baskets full of fragments, and of the fish.

And those having eaten of the loaves were five thousand men.

And immediately He compelled His disciples to enter into the boat and to go before Him to the other side, to Bethsaida, until He dismisses the crowd.

And having taken leave of them, He went away to the mountain to pray.

And evening having come, the boat was in the midst of the sea, and He alone on the land.
