הִ֭נָּשֵׂא שֹׁפֵ֣ט הָאָ֑רֶץ הָשֵׁ֥ב גְּ֝מ֗וּל עַל־ גֵּאִֽים׃ | Rise up, O judge of the earth; repay to the proud what they deserve! | Rise up, Judge of the earth; pay back to the proud what they deserve. |
עַד־ מָתַ֖י רְשָׁעִ֥ים ׀ יְהוָ֑ה עַד־ מָ֝תַ֗י רְשָׁעִ֥ים יַעֲלֹֽזוּ׃ | O LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked exult? | How long, LORD, will the wicked, how long will the wicked be jubilant? |
יַבִּ֣יעוּ יְדַבְּר֣וּ עָתָ֑ק יִֽ֝תְאַמְּר֗וּ כָּל־ פֹּ֥עֲלֵי אָֽוֶן׃ | They pour out their arrogant words; all the evildoers boast. | They pour out arrogant words; all the evildoers are full of boasting. |
עַמְּךָ֣ יְהוָ֣ה יְדַכְּא֑וּ וְֽנַחֲלָתְךָ֥ יְעַנּֽוּ׃ | They crush your people, O LORD, and afflict your heritage. | They crush your people, LORD; they oppress your inheritance. |
אַ֭לְמָנָה וְגֵ֣ר יַהֲרֹ֑גוּ וִֽיתוֹמִ֣ים יְרַצֵּֽחוּ׃ | They kill the widow and the sojourner, and murder the fatherless; | They slay the widow and the foreigner; they murder the fatherless. |
וַ֭יֹּ֣אמְרוּ לֹ֣א יִרְאֶה־ יָּ֑הּ וְלֹא־ יָ֝בִ֗ין אֱלֹהֵ֥י יַעֲקֹֽב׃ | and they say, “The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob does not perceive.” | They say, “The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob takes no notice.” |
בִּ֭ינוּ בֹּעֲרִ֣ים בָּעָ֑ם וּ֝כְסִילִ֗ים מָתַ֥י תַּשְׂכִּֽילוּ׃ | Understand, O dullest of the people! Fools, when will you be wise? | Take notice, you senseless ones among the people; you fools, when will you become wise? |
הֲנֹ֣טַֽע אֹ֭זֶן הֲלֹ֣א יִשְׁמָ֑ע אִֽם־ יֹ֥צֵֽר עַ֝֗יִן הֲלֹ֣א יַבִּֽיט׃ | He who planted the ear, does he not hear? He who formed the eye, does he not see? | Does he who fashioned the ear not hear? Does he who formed the eye not see? |
הֲיֹסֵ֣ר גּ֭וֹיִם הֲלֹ֣א יוֹכִ֑יחַ הַֽמְלַמֵּ֖ד אָדָ֣ם דָּֽעַת׃ | He who disciplines the nations, does he not rebuke? He who teaches man knowledge— | Does he who disciplines nations not punish? Does he who teaches mankind lack knowledge? |
יְֽהוָ֗ה יֹ֭דֵעַ מַחְשְׁב֣וֹת אָדָ֑ם כִּי־ הֵ֥מָּה הָֽבֶל׃ | the LORD—knows the thoughts of man, that they are but a breath. | The LORD knows all human plans; he knows that they are futile. |
אַשְׁרֵ֤י ׀ הַגֶּ֣בֶר אֲשֶׁר־ תְּיַסְּרֶ֣נּוּ יָּ֑הּ וּֽמִתּוֹרָתְךָ֥ תְלַמְּדֶֽנּוּ׃ | Blessed is the man whom you discipline, O LORD, and whom you teach out of your law, | Blessed is the one you discipline, LORD, the one you teach from your law; |
לְהַשְׁקִ֣יט ל֭וֹ מִ֣ימֵי רָ֑ע עַ֤ד יִכָּרֶ֖ה לָרָשָׁ֣ע שָֽׁחַת׃ | to give him rest from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked. | you grant them relief from days of trouble, till a pit is dug for the wicked. |
כִּ֤י ׀ לֹא־ יִטֹּ֣שׁ יְהוָ֣ה עַמּ֑וֹ וְ֝נַחֲלָת֗וֹ לֹ֣א יַעֲזֹֽב׃ | For the LORD will not forsake his people; he will not abandon his heritage; | For the LORD will not reject his people; he will never forsake his inheritance. |
כִּֽי־ עַד־ צֶ֭דֶק יָשׁ֣וּב מִשְׁפָּ֑ט וְ֝אַחֲרָ֗יו כָּל־ יִשְׁרֵי־ לֵֽב׃ | for justice will return to the righteous, and all the upright in heart will follow it. | Judgment will again be founded on righteousness, and all the upright in heart will follow it. |
מִֽי־ יָק֣וּם לִ֭י עִם־ מְרֵעִ֑ים מִֽי־ יִתְיַצֵּ֥ב לִ֝י עִם־ פֹּ֥עֲלֵי אָֽוֶן׃ | Who rises up for me against the wicked? Who stands up for me against evildoers? | Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will take a stand for me against evildoers? |
לוּלֵ֣י יְ֭הוָה עֶזְרָ֣תָה לִּ֑י כִּמְעַ֓ט ׀ שָֽׁכְנָ֖ה דוּמָ֣ה נַפְשִֽׁי׃ | If the LORD had not been my help, my soul would soon have lived in the land of silence. | Unless the LORD had given me help, I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death. |
אִם־ אָ֭מַרְתִּי מָ֣טָה רַגְלִ֑י חַסְדְּךָ֥ יְ֝הוָ֗ה יִסְעָדֵֽנִי׃ | When I thought, “My foot slips,” your steadfast love, O LORD, held me up. | When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your unfailing love, LORD, supported me. |
בְּרֹ֣ב שַׂרְעַפַּ֣י בְּקִרְבִּ֑י תַּ֝נְחוּמֶ֗יךָ יְֽשַׁעַשְׁע֥וּ נַפְשִֽׁי׃ | When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul. | When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy. |
הַֽ֭יְחָבְרְךָ כִּסֵּ֣א הַוּ֑וֹת יֹצֵ֖ר עָמָ֣ל עֲלֵי־ חֹֽק׃ | Can wicked rulers be allied with you, those who frame injustice by statute? | Can a corrupt throne be allied with you— a throne that brings on misery by its decrees? |
יָ֭גוֹדּוּ עַל־ נֶ֣פֶשׁ צַדִּ֑יק וְדָ֖ם נָקִ֣י יַרְשִֽׁיעוּ׃ | They band together against the life of the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. | The wicked band together against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. |
וַיְהִ֬י יְהוָ֣ה לִ֣י לְמִשְׂגָּ֑ב וֵ֝אלֹהַ֗י לְצ֣וּר מַחְסִֽי׃ | But the LORD has become my stronghold, and my God the rock of my refuge. | But the LORD has become my fortress, and my God the rock in whom I take refuge. |
וַיָּ֤שֶׁב עֲלֵיהֶ֨ם ׀ אֶת־ אוֹנָ֗ם וּבְרָעָתָ֥ם יַצְמִיתֵ֑ם יַ֝צְמִיתֵ֗ם יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃ | He will bring back on them their iniquity and wipe them out for their wickedness; the LORD our God will wipe them out. | He will repay them for their sins and destroy them for their wickedness; the LORD our God will destroy them. |
