1 In those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples, and saith to them, In those days, when again a great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat, he called his disciples to him and said to them, During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said,
2 I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat: “I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat.
3 And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for some of them came from a distance. And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way. And some of them have come from far away.” If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.”
4 And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness? And his disciples answered him, “How can one feed these people with bread here in this desolate place?” His disciples answered, “But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?”
5 And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven. And he asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven.” “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied.
6 And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and broke, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they set them before the people. And he directed the crowd to sit down on the ground. And he took the seven loaves, and having given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and they set them before the crowd. He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people, and they did so.
7 And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them. And they had a few small fish. 9 And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and he dismissed them. And there were about four thousand people. And he sent them away. About four thousand were present. After he had sent them away,
10 And forthwith he entered into a boat with his disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha. And immediately he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha. he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha.
11 And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven, tempting him. 14 Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the boat with them more than one loaf. Now they had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat.
15 And he charged them saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod. And he cautioned them, saying, “Watch out; beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.” “Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.”
16 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread. And they began discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread. They discussed this with one another and said, “It is because we have no bread.”
17 And when Jesus knew it, he saith to them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened? And Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened?
18 Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember? Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember? Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember?
19 When I divided the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say to him, Twelve. When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They said to him, “Twelve.” When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?” “Twelve,” they replied.
20 And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven. “And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” And they said to him, “Seven.” “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?” They answered, “Seven.”
21 And he said to them, How is it that ye do not understand? And he said to them, “Do you not yet understand?” He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”
22 And he cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man to him, and besought him to touch him. And they came to Bethsaida. And some people brought to him a blind man and begged him to touch him. They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him.
23 And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw aught. And he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village, and when he had spit on his eyes and laid his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man’s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”
24 And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees walking. And he looked up and said, “I see people, but they look like trees, walking.” He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”
25 After that, he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly. Then Jesus laid his hands on his eyes again; and he opened his eyes, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.
26 And he sent him away to his house, saying, Neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town. And he sent him to his home, saying, “Do not even enter the village.” Jesus sent him home, saying, “Don’t even go into the village.”
27 And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Cesarea Philippi: and by the way he asked his disciples, saying to them, Who do men say that I am? And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”
28 And they answered, John the Baptist: but some say, Elijah; and others, One of the prophets, And they told him, “John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.”
29 And he saith to them, But who say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith to him, Thou art the Christ. And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.” “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”
30 And he charged them that they should tell no man of him. And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him. Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.
31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, and the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
34 And when he had called the people to him with his disciples also, he said to them, Whoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.
35 For whoever will save his life, shall lose it; but whoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.
36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul: For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?
37 Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? For what can a man give in return for his soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?
38 Whoever therefore shall be ashamed of me, and of my words, in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also will the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
