1 About that time there was once again a large crowd with nothing to eat. Jesus called his disciples and said to them, In those days, when again a great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat, he called his disciples to him and said to them, During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said,
2 |I feel sorry for the people. They have been with me three days now and have nothing to eat. “I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat.
3 If I send them home before they've eaten, they will become exhausted on the road. Some of them have come a long distance.| And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way. And some of them have come from far away.” If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.”
4 His disciples asked him, |Where could anyone get enough bread to feed these people in this place where no one lives?| And his disciples answered him, “How can one feed these people with bread here in this desolate place?” His disciples answered, “But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?”
5 Jesus asked them, |How many loaves of bread do you have?| They answered, |Seven.| And he asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven.” “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied.
6 He ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground. He took the seven loaves and gave thanks to God. Then he broke the bread and gave it to his disciples to serve to the people. And he directed the crowd to sit down on the ground. And he took the seven loaves, and having given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and they set them before the crowd. 17 Jesus knew what they were saying and asked them, |Why are you discussing the fact that you don't have any bread? Don't you understand yet? Don't you catch on? Are your minds closed? 18 Are you blind and deaf? Don't you remember? Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember? Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember?
19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets did you fill with leftover pieces?| They told him, |Twelve.| When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They said to him, “Twelve.” When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?” “Twelve,” they replied.
20 |When I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many large baskets did you fill with leftover pieces?| They answered him, |Seven.| “And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” And they said to him, “Seven.” “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?” They answered, “Seven.”
21 He asked them, |Don't you catch on yet?| And he said to them, “Do you not yet understand?” He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”
22 As they came to Bethsaida, some people brought a blind man to Jesus. They begged Jesus to touch him. And they came to Bethsaida. And some people brought to him a blind man and begged him to touch him. They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him.
23 Jesus took the blind man's hand and led him out of the village. He spit into the man's eyes and placed his hands on him. 26 Jesus told him when he sent him home, |Don't go into the village.| And he sent him to his home, saying, “Do not even enter the village.” Jesus sent him home, saying, “Don’t even go into the village.”
27 Then Jesus and his disciples went to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. 30 He ordered them not to tell anyone about him. And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him. Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.
31 Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man would have to suffer a lot. He taught them that he would be rejected by the leaders, the chief priests, and the scribes. He would be killed, but after three days he would come back to life. And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. 34 Then Jesus called the crowd to himself along with his disciples. He said to them, |Those who want to follow me must say no to the things they want, pick up their crosses, and follow me. And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 Those who want to save their lives will lose them. But those who lose their lives for me and for the Good News will save them. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36 What good does it do for people to win the whole world yet lose their lives? For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?
37 Or what should a person give in exchange for life? For what can a man give in return for his soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?
38 If people are ashamed of me and what I say in this unfaithful and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of those people when he comes with the holy angels in his Father's glory.| For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
