1 In those days, when there was again a great multitude, and they had nothing to eat, he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, In those days, when again a great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat, he called his disciples to him and said to them, During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said,
2 I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: “I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat.
3 and if I send them away fasting to their home, they will faint in the way; and some of them are come from far. And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way. And some of them have come from far away.” If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.”
4 And his disciples answered him, Whence shall one be able to fill these men with bread here in a desert place? And his disciples answered him, “How can one feed these people with bread here in this desolate place?” His disciples answered, “But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?”
5 And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven. And he asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven.” “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied.
6 And he commandeth the multitude to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and having given thanks, he brake, and gave to his disciples, to set before them; and they set them before the multitude. And he directed the crowd to sit down on the ground. And he took the seven loaves, and having given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and they set them before the crowd. He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people, and they did so.
7 And they had a few small fishes: and having blessed them, he commanded to set these also before them. And they had a few small fish. 14 And they forgot to take bread; and they had not in the boat with them more than one loaf. Now they had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat.
15 And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod. And he cautioned them, saying, “Watch out; beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.” “Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.”
16 And they reasoned one with another, saying, We have no bread. And they began discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread. They discussed this with one another and said, “It is because we have no bread.”
17 And Jesus perceiving it saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? do ye not yet perceive, neither understand? have ye your heart hardened? And Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened?
18 Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember? Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember? Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember?
19 When I brake the five loaves among the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve. When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They said to him, “Twelve.” When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?” “Twelve,” they replied.
20 And when the seven among the four thousand, how many basketfuls of broken pieces took ye up? And they say unto him, Seven. “And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” And they said to him, “Seven.” “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?” They answered, “Seven.”
21 And he said unto them, Do ye not yet understand? And he said to them, “Do you not yet understand?” He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”
22 And they come unto Bethsaida. And they bring to him a blind man, and beseech him to touch him. And they came to Bethsaida. And some people brought to him a blind man and begged him to touch him. They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him.
23 And he took hold of the blind man by the hand, and brought him out of the village; and when he had spit on his eyes, and laid his hands upon him, he asked him, Seest thou aught? And he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village, and when he had spit on his eyes and laid his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man’s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”
24 And he looked up, and said, I see men; for I behold them as trees, walking. And he looked up and said, “I see people, but they look like trees, walking.” He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”
25 Then again he laid his hands upon his eyes; and he looked stedfastly, and was restored, and saw all things clearly. Then Jesus laid his hands on his eyes again; and he opened his eyes, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.
26 And he sent him away to his home, saying, Do not even enter into the village. And he sent him to his home, saying, “Do not even enter the village.” Jesus sent him home, saying, “Don’t even go into the village.”
27 And Jesus went forth, and his disciples, into the villages of Caesarea Philippi: and in the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Who do men say that I am? And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”
28 And they told him, saying, John the Baptist: and others, Elijah; but others, One of the prophets. And they told him, “John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.”
29 And he asked them, But who say ye that I am? Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ. And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.” “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”
30 And he charged them that they should tell no man of him. And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him. Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.
31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, and the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
34 And he called unto him the multitude with his disciples, and said unto them, If any man would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.
35 For whosoever would save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's shall save it. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.
36 For what doth it profit a man, to gain the whole world, and forfeit his life? For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?
37 For what should a man give in exchange for his life? For what can a man give in return for his soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?
38 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of man also shall be ashamed of him, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
