1 In those days, the crowd again being great and not having what they might eat, having summoned the disciples, He says to them, In those days, when again a great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat, he called his disciples to him and said to them, During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said,
2 “I have compassion toward the crowd, because already three days they continue with Me and have nothing that they might eat. “I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat.
3 And if I shall dismiss them hungry to their house, they will faint on the way. And some of them have come from afar.” And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way. And some of them have come from far away.” If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.”
4 And His disciples answered Him, “From where will anyone be able to satisfy these with loaves here in a wilderness?” And his disciples answered him, “How can one feed these people with bread here in this desolate place?” His disciples answered, “But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?”
5 And He was asking them, “How many loaves do you⁺ have?” And they said, “Seven.” And he asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven.” “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied.
6 And He commands the crowd to recline on the ground. And having taken the seven loaves, having given thanks, He broke them and was giving them to His disciples to set before them. And they set them before the crowd. And he directed the crowd to sit down on the ground. And he took the seven loaves, and having given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and they set them before the crowd. He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people, and they did so.
7 And they had a few small fish. And having blessed them, He said to set before them these also. And they had a few small fish. 11 And the Pharisees came out and began to dispute with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven, testing Him. 12 And having sighed deeply in His spirit, He says, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.” He sighed deeply and said, “Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to it.”
13 And having left them, having embarked again, He went away to the other side. And he left them, got into the boat again, and went to the other side. Then he left them, got back into the boat and crossed to the other side.
14 And they forgot to take loaves, and except one loaf they had nothing with them in the boat. Now they had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat.
15 And He was instructing them, saying, “Watch! Take heed of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.” And he cautioned them, saying, “Watch out; beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.” “Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.”
16 And they were reasoning with one another because they had no loaves. And they began discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread. They discussed this with one another and said, “It is because we have no bread.”
17 And having known, He says to them, “Why do you⁺ reason that you⁺ have no loaves? Do you⁺ not yet perceive, nor do you⁺ understand? Do you⁺ have your⁺ heart hardened? And Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened?
18 ‘Having eyes, do you⁺ not see? And having ears, do you⁺ not hear?’ And do you⁺ not remember? Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember? Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember?
19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many hand-baskets full of fragments did you⁺ take up?” They say to Him, “Twelve.” When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They said to him, “Twelve.” When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?” “Twelve,” they replied.
20 “When also the seven were for the four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you⁺ take up?” And they said, “Seven.” “And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” And they said to him, “Seven.” “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?” They answered, “Seven.”
21 And He was saying to them, “Do you⁺ not yet understand?” And he said to them, “Do you not yet understand?” He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”
22 And they come to Bethsaida. And they bring to Him a blind man and implore Him that He might touch him. And they came to Bethsaida. And some people brought to him a blind man and begged him to touch him. They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him.
23 And having taken hold of the hand of the blind man, He led him forth outside of the village. And having spit upon his eyes, having laid the hands upon him, He was asking him, “Do you see anything?” And he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village, and when he had spit on his eyes and laid his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man’s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”
24 And having looked up, he was saying, “I see the men, because I see them as trees walking.” And he looked up and said, “I see people, but they look like trees, walking.” He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”
25 Then He laid the hands upon his eyes again, and he opened his eyes, and he was restored, and he was seeing everything clearly. Then Jesus laid his hands on his eyes again; and he opened his eyes, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.
26 And He sent him to his house, saying, “Do not enter into the village.” And he sent him to his home, saying, “Do not even enter the village.” Jesus sent him home, saying, “Don’t even go into the village.”
27 And Jesus and His disciples went out into the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way, He was questioning His disciples, saying to them, “Who do men say I am?” And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”
28 And they spoke to Him, saying, “John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” And they told him, “John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.”
29 And He was questioning them, “But you⁺, who do you⁺ say I am?” Answering, Peter says to Him, “You are the Christ.” And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.” “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”
30 And He warned them that they should tell no one concerning Him. And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him. Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.
31 And He began to teach them that it is necessary for the Son of Man to suffer many things, and to be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and to be killed, and after three days to rise again. And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. 33 But having turned and having seen His disciples, He rebuked Peter, and He says, “Get behind Me, Satan, because you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.” But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
34 And having summoned the crowd with His disciples, He said to them, “If anyone wants to come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me. And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.
35 For whoever may want to save his life will lose it, but whoever will lose his life on account of Me and of the gospel, he will save it. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.
36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and to lose his soul? For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?
37 For what shall a man give as an exchange for his soul? For what can a man give in return for his soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?
38 For whoever may be ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man also will be ashamed of him when He shall come in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.” For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
