1 So they arrived at the opposite shore of the Lake, in the country of the Gerasenes. They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes. They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.
2 At once, on His landing, there came from the tombs to meet Him a man possessed by a foul spirit. And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him.
3 This man lived among the tombs, nor could any one now secure him even with a chain; He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain.
4 for many a time he had been left securely bound in fetters and chains, but afterwards the chains lay torn link from link, and the fetters in fragments, and there was no one strong enough to master him. for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him.
5 And constantly, day and night, he remained among the tombs or on the hills, shrieking, and mangling himself with sharp stones. Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones. Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.
6 And when he saw Jesus in the distance, he ran and threw himself at His feet, And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him. When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him.
7 crying out in a loud voice, "What hast Thou to do with me, Jesus, Son of God Most High? In God's name I implore Thee not to torment me." And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.” He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!”
8 For He had said to him, "Foul spirit, come out of the man." For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”
9 Jesus also questioned him. "What is your name?" He said. "Legion," he replied, "for there are a host of us." And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.” Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.”
10 And he earnestly entreated Him not to send them away out of the country. And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.
11 Feeding there, on the mountain slope, was a great herd of swine. Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside.
12 So they besought Jesus. "Send us to the swine," they said, "so that we may enter into them." and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.” The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.”
13 He gave them leave; and the foul spirits came out and entered into the swine, and the herd--about 2,000 in number--rushed headlong down the cliff into the Lake and were drowned in the Lake. So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea. He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.
14 The swineherds fled, and spread the news in town and country. So the people came to see what it was that had happened; The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.
15 and when they came to Jesus, they beheld the demoniac quietly seated, clothed and of sane mind--the man who had had the legion; and they were awe-stricken. And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
16 And those who had seen it told them the particulars of what had happened to the demoniac, and all about the swine. And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well.
17 Then they began entreating Him to depart from their district. And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region. Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.
18 As He was embarking, the man who had been possessed asked permission to accompany Him. As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him.
19 But He would not allow it. "Go home to your family," He said, "and report to them all that the Lord has done for you, and the mercy He has shown you." And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”
20 So the man departed, and related publicly everywhere in the Ten Towns all that Jesus had done for him; and all were astonished. And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled. So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.
21 When Jesus had re-crossed in the boat to the other side, a vast multitude came crowding to Him; and He was on the shore of the Lake, And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake.
22 when there came one of the Wardens of the Synagogue--he was called Jair--who, on beholding Him, threw himself at His feet, Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet.
23 and besought Him with many entreaties. "My little daughter," he said, "is at the point of death: I pray you come and lay your hands upon her, that she may recover and live." and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.”
24 And Jesus went with him. And a dense crowd followed Him, and thronged Him on all sides. And he went with him. And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him. So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him.
25 Now a woman who for twelve years had suffered from haemorrhage, And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years.
26 and had undergone many different treatments under a number of doctors and had spent all she had without receiving benefit but on the contrary growing worse, and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.
27 heard of Jesus. And she came in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak; She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,
28 for she said, "If I but touch His clothes, I shall be cured." For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.”
29 In a moment the flow of her blood ceased, and she felt in herself that her complaint was cured. And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.
30 Immediately Jesus, well knowing that healing power had gone from within Him, turned round in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?" And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
31 "You see the multitude pressing you on all sides," His disciples exclaimed, "and yet you ask, 'Who touched me?'" And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’” “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ “
32 But He continued looking about to see the person who had done this, And he looked around to see who had done it. But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it.
33 until the woman, frightened and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and threw herself at His feet, and told Him all the truth. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth.
34 "Daughter," He said, "your faith has cured you: go in peace, and be free from your complaint." And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.” He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”
35 While He is yet speaking, men come from the house to the Warden, and say, "Your daughter is dead: why trouble the Rabbi further?" While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?”
36 But Jesus, overhearing the words, said to the Warden, "Do not be afraid; only have faith." But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
37 And He allowed no one to accompany Him except Peter and the brothers James and John. And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.
38 So they come to the Warden's house. Here He gazes on a scene of uproar, with people weeping aloud and wailing. They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly.
39 He goes in. "Why all this outcry and loud weeping?" He asks; "the child is asleep, not dead." And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.”
40 To this their reply is a scornful laugh. He, however, puts them all out, takes the child's father and mother and those He has brought with Him, and enters the room where the child lies. And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was.
41 Then, taking her by the hand, He says to her, "Talitha, koum;" that is to say, "Little girl, I command you to wake!" Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”).
42 Instantly the little girl rises to her feet and begins to walk (for she was twelve years old) And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished.
43 but He gave strict injunctions that the matter should not be made known, and directed them to give her something to eat. And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat. He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.
