1 Then they came to the other side of the sea, into the region of the Gerasenes. They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes. They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.
2 And when He got out of the boat, immediately a man from the tombs with an unclean spirit met Him, And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him.
3 who had his dwelling among the tombs. And no one was able to bind him anymore, even with a chain; He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain.
4 because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him and the shackles broken in pieces, and no one was strong enough to subdue him. for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him.
5 And constantly, night and day, among the tombs and in the mountains, he was screaming and gashing himself with stones. Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones. Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.
6 And seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him; And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him. When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him.
7 and crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What do I have to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!” And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.” He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!”
8 For He had been saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”
9 And He was asking him, “What is your name?” And he said to Him, “My name is Legion; for we are many.” And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.” Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.”
10 And he began pleading with Him earnestly not to send them out of the region. And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.
11 Now there was a large herd of swine feeding nearby on the mountain. Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside.
12 And the demons pleaded with Him, saying, “Send us into the swine so that we may enter them.” and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.” The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.”
13 And Jesus gave them permission. And coming out, the unclean spirits entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, about two thousand of them; and they were drowned in the sea. So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea. He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.
14 And their herdsmen ran away and reported it in the city and in the countryside. And the people came to see what it was that had happened. The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.
15 And they came to Jesus and observed the demon-possessed man sitting down, clothed and in his right mind, the very man who had the “legion”; and they became frightened. And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
16 And those who had seen it recounted to them how this had happened to the demon-possessed man, and all about the swine. And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well.
17 And they began to plead with Him to leave their region. And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region. Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.
18 And as He was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed was pleading with Him that he might accompany Him. As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him.
19 And He did not let him, but He said to him, “Go home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you.” And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”
20 And he went away and began to preach in the Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was marveling. And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled. So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.
21 And when Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him; and so He stayed by the seashore. And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake.
22 And one of the synagogue officials named Jairus came up, and on seeing Him, fell at His feet Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet.
23 and pleaded with Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death; please come, that by coming, You may lay Your hands on her, so that she will be saved and live.” and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.”
24 And He went off with him; and a large crowd was following Him and pressing in on Him. And he went with him. And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him. So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him.
25 And a woman—who had a hemorrhage for twelve years And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years.
26 and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse— and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.
27 after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His garment. She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,
28 For she was saying, “If I just touch His garments, I will be saved from this.” For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.”
29 And immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she knew within her body that she had been healed of her affliction. And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.
30 And immediately Jesus, perceiving in Himself that the power proceeding from Him had gone forth, turned around in the crowd and was saying, “Who touched My garments?” And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
31 And His disciples were saying to Him, “You see the crowd pressing in on You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’” And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’” “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ “
32 And He was looking around to see the woman who had done this. And he looked around to see who had done it. But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it.
33 But the woman fearing and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth.
34 And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has saved you; go in peace and be healed of your affliction.” And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.” He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”
35 While He was still speaking, they came from the house of the synagogue official, saying, “Your daughter has died; why trouble the Teacher anymore?” While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?”
36 But Jesus, overhearing what had been spoken, said to the synagogue official, “Do not be afraid, only believe.” But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
37 And He allowed no one to accompany Him, except Peter and James and John the brother of James. And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.
38 And they came to the house of the synagogue official; and He saw a commotion, and people loudly crying and wailing. They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly.
39 And entering in, He said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and crying? The child has not died, but is asleep.” And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.”
40 And they began laughing at Him. But putting them all out, He took along the child’s father and mother and His own companions, and entered the room where the child was. And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was.
41 And taking the child by the hand, He said to her, “Talitha kum!” (which translated means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!”). Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”).
42 And immediately the little girl stood up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were completely astounded. And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished.
43 And He gave them strict orders that no one should know about this, and He said that some food should be given to her to eat. And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat. He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.
