1 They arrived in the territory of the Gerasenes on the other side of the Sea of Galilee. They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes. They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.
2 As Jesus stepped out of the boat, a man came out of the tombs and met him. The man was controlled by an evil spirit And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him.
3 and lived among the tombs. No one could restrain him any longer, not even with a chain. He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain.
4 He had often been chained hand and foot. However, he snapped the chains off his hands and broke the chains from his feet. No one could control him. for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him.
5 Night and day he was among the tombs and on the mountainsides screaming and cutting himself with stones. Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones. Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.
6 The man saw Jesus at a distance. So he ran [to Jesus], bowed down in front of him, And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him. When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him.
7 and shouted, |Why are you bothering me now, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Swear to God that you won't torture me.| And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.” He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!”
8 He shouted this because Jesus said, |You evil spirit, come out of the man.| For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”
9 Jesus asked him, |What is your name?| He told Jesus, |My name is Legion [Six Thousand], because there are many of us.| And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.” Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.”
10 He begged Jesus not to send them out of the territory. And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.
11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on a mountainside nearby. Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside.
12 The demons begged him, |Send us into the pigs! Let us enter them!| and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.” The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.”
13 Jesus let them do this. The evil spirits came out of the man and went into the pigs. The herd of about two thousand pigs rushed down the cliff into the sea and drowned. So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea. He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.
14 Those who took care of the pigs ran away. In the city and countryside they reported everything that had happened. So the people came to see what had happened. The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.
15 They came to Jesus and saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons. The man was sitting there dressed and in his right mind. The people were frightened. And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
16 Those who saw this told what had happened to the demon-possessed man and the pigs. And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well.
17 Then the people began to beg Jesus to leave their territory. And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region. Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.
18 As Jesus stepped into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged him, |Let me stay with you.| As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him.
19 But Jesus would not allow it. Instead, he told the man, |Go home to your family, and tell them how much the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been to you.| And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”
20 So the man left. He began to tell how much Jesus had done for him in the Ten Cities. Everyone was amazed. And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled. So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.
21 Jesus again crossed to the other side of the Sea of Galilee in a boat. A large crowd gathered around him by the seashore. And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake.
22 A synagogue leader named Jairus also arrived. When he saw Jesus, he quickly bowed down in front of him. Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet.
23 He begged Jesus, |My little daughter is dying. Come, lay your hands on her so that she may get well and live.| and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.”
24 Jesus went with the man. A huge crowd followed Jesus and pressed him on every side. And he went with him. And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him. So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him.
25 In the crowd was a woman who had been suffering from chronic bleeding for twelve years. And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years.
26 Although she had been under the care of many doctors and had spent all her money, she had not been helped at all. Actually, she had become worse. and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.
27 Since she had heard about Jesus, she came from behind in the crowd and touched his clothes. She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,
28 She said, |If I can just touch his clothes, I'll get well.| For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.”
29 Her bleeding stopped immediately. She felt cured from her illness. And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.
30 At that moment Jesus felt power had gone out of him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, |Who touched my clothes?| And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
31 His disciples said to him, |How can you ask, 'Who touched me,' when you see the crowd pressing you on all sides?| And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’” “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ “
32 But he kept looking around to see the woman who had done this. And he looked around to see who had done it. But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it.
33 The woman trembled with fear. She knew what had happened to her. So she quickly bowed in front of him and told him the whole truth. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth.
34 Jesus told her, |Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace! Be cured from your illness.| And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.” He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”
35 While Jesus was still speaking to her, some people came from the synagogue leader's home. They told the synagogue leader, |Your daughter has died. Why bother the teacher anymore?| While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?”
36 When Jesus overheard what they said, he told the synagogue leader, |Don't be afraid! Just believe.| But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
37 Jesus allowed no one to go with him except Peter and the two brothers James and John. And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.
38 When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a noisy crowd there. People were crying and sobbing loudly. They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly.
39 When he came into the house, he asked them, |Why are you making so much noise and crying? The child isn't dead. She's just sleeping.| And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.”
40 They laughed at him. So he made all of them go outside. Then he took the child's father, mother, and his three disciples and went to the child. And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was.
41 Jesus took the child's hand and said to her, |Talitha, koum!| which means, |Little girl, I'm telling you to get up!| Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”).
42 The girl got up at once and started to walk. (She was twelve years old.) They were astonished. And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished.
43 Jesus ordered them not to let anyone know about this. He also told them to give the little girl something to eat. And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat. He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.
