1	Now it happened that, when the crowds pressed toward him, so that they might hear the word of God, he was standing beside the lake of Genesaret.	On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret,	One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.
2	And he saw two boats standing beside the lake. But the fishermen had climbed down, and they were washing their nets.	and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets.	He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets.
3	And so, climbing into one of the boats, which belonged to Simon, he asked him to draw back a little from the land. And sitting down, he taught the crowds from the boat.	Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat.	He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.
4	Then, when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, “Lead us into deep water, and release your nets for a catch.”	And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”	When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”
5	And in response, Simon said to him: “Teacher, working throughout the night, we caught nothing. But on your word, I will release the net.”	And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.”	Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
6	And when they had done this, they enclosed such a copious multitude of fish that their net was rupturing.	And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking.	When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.
7	And they signaled to their associates, who were in the other boat, so that they would come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they were nearly submerged.	They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.	So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
8	But when Simon Peter had seen this, he fell down at the knees of Jesus, saying, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.”	But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”	When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”
9	For astonishment had enveloped him, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish that they had taken.	For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken,	For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken,
10	Now the same was true of James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were associates of Simon. And Jesus said to Simon: “Do not be afraid. From now on, you will be catching men.”	and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”	and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.”
11	And having led their boats to land, leaving behind everything, they followed him.	And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.	So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.
12	And it happened that, while he was in a certain city, behold, there was a man full of leprosy who, upon seeing Jesus and falling to his face, petitioned him, saying: “Lord, if you are willing, you are able to cleanse me.”	While he was in one of the cities, there came a man full of leprosy. And when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged him, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.”	While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
13	And extending his hand, he touched him, saying: “I am willing. Be cleansed.” And at once, the leprosy departed from him.	And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him.	Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him.
14	And he instructed him that he should tell no one, “But go, show yourself to the priest, and make the offering for your cleansing, just as Moses has commanded, as a testimony for them.”	And he charged him to tell no one, but “go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, as Moses commanded, for a proof to them.”	Then Jesus ordered him, “Don’t tell anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
15	Yet word of him traveled around all the more. And great crowds came together, so that they might listen and be cured by him from their infirmities.	But now even more the report about him went abroad, and great crowds gathered to hear him and to be healed of their infirmities.	Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses.
16	And he withdrew into the desert and prayed.	But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray.	But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.
17	And it happened, on a certain day, that he again sat down, teaching. And there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting nearby, who had come from every town of Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present, to heal them.	On one of those days, as he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with him to heal.	One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick.
18	And behold, some men were carrying in the bed of a man who was paralyzed. And they sought a way to bring him in, and to place him before him.	And behold, some men were bringing on a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they were seeking to bring him in and lay him before Jesus,	Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus.
19	And not finding a way by which they might bring him in, because of the crowd, they climbed up to the roof, and they let him down through the roof tiles with his bed, into their midst, in front of Jesus.	but finding no way to bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into the midst before Jesus.	When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
20	And when he saw his faith, he said, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.”	And when he saw their faith, he said, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.”	When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”
21	And the scribes and Pharisees began to think, saying: “Who is this, who is speaking blasphemies? Who is able to forgive sins, except God alone?”	And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”	The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
22	But when Jesus realized their thoughts, responding, he said to them: “What are you thinking in your hearts?	When Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answered them, “Why do you question in your hearts?	Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?
23	Which is easier to say: ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise up and walk?’	Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’?	Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’?
24	But so that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins,” he said to the paralytic, “I say to you to: Rise up, take up your bed, and go into your house.”	But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the man who was paralyzed— “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed and go home.”	But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”
25	And at once, rising up in their sight, he took up the bed on which he was lying, and he went away to his own house, magnifying God.	And immediately he rose up before them and picked up what he had been lying on and went home, glorifying God.	Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God.
26	And astonishment took hold of everyone, and they were magnifying God. And they were filled with fear, saying: “For we have seen miracles today.”	And amazement seized them all, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, “We have seen extraordinary things today.”	Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God. They were filled with awe and said, “We have seen remarkable things today.”
27	And after these things, he went out, and he saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the customs office. And he said to him, “Follow me.”	After this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, “Follow me.”	After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,” Jesus said to him,
28	And leaving behind everything, rising up, he followed him.	And leaving everything, he rose and followed him.	and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.
29	And Levi made a great feast for him in his own house. And there was a large crowd of tax collectors and others, who were sitting at table with them.	And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them.	Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them.
30	But the Pharisees and scribes were murmuring, saying to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”	And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”	But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”
31	And responding, Jesus said to them: “It is not those who are well who need a doctor, but those who have maladies.	And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.	Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
32	I have not come to call the just, but sinners to repentance.”	I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”	I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
33	But they said to him, “Why do the disciples of John fast frequently, and make supplications, and those of the Pharisees act similarly, while yours eat and drink?”	And they said to him, “The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.”	They said to him, “John’s disciples often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking.”
34	And he said to them: “How can you cause the sons of the groom to fast, while the groom is still with them?	And Jesus said to them, “Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?	Jesus answered, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while he is with them?
35	But the days will come when the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast, in those days.”	The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.”	But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; in those days they will fast.”
36	Then he also made a comparison for them: “For no one sews a patch from a new garment onto an old garment. Otherwise, he both disrupts the new one, and the patch from the new one does not join together with the old one.	He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. If he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old.	He told them this parable: “No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old.
37	And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine ruptures the wineskins, and it will be poured out, and the wineskins will be lost.	And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed.	And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined.
38	Instead, the new wine is put into new wineskins, and both are preserved.	But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.	No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins.
39	And no one who is drinking the old, soon wishes for the new. For he says, ‘The old is better.’ ”	And no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.’”	And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.’”
