1 Now before the feast of the passover, Jesus perceiving that his hour was come, when he was to pass out of this world, and go to the father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
2 while they were at supper, (the devil having now put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him) Jesus, During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.
3 though he knew that the father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and was going to God, Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God;
4 rose from supper, laid aside his garment, and took a towel to wrap about him. rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.
5 after that, he poured water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 then coming to Simon Peter, Peter said to him, Lord, what! would you wash my feet? He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
7 Jesus answered him, you don't at present comprehend what I am about: but hereafter you shall. Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
8 Peter said to him, you shall never wash my feet. Jesus answered, if I do not cleanse thee, you cannot partake with me. Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”
9 Simon Peter said to him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”
10 Jesus said to him, he that comes out from bathing has occasion only to wash his feet, the rest of his body being clean: so you are clean, but not every one of you. Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.” Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.”
11 for he knew who would betray him; therefore, said he, you are not every one of you clean. For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.” For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.
12 after he had washed their feet, he took his garment, and setting down again, he said to them, do you comprehend what I have been doing? When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them.
13 you call me master, and lord: and you are in the right; for so I am. You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am.
14 if I then, tho' lord and master, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.
15 for I have given you example, that you might behave to one another, as I have to you. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
16 I declare unto you, the servant is not greater than his lord, neither he that is sent, greater than he that sent him. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
17 if ye comprehend these things, happy are ye if ye put them in practice. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
18 I say not this of you all; for I know whom I have chosen: and that passage of the scripture must be fulfilled, "He that eateth bread with me, hath lift up his heel against me." I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ “I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture: ‘He who shared my bread has turned against me.’
19 I tell it you now before it happens, that when it is come to pass, you may believe that I am the Messias. I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. “I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am who I am.
20 I declare unto you, he that receiveth him that I send, receiveth me: and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.” Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”
21 When Jesus utter'd these words, he was troubled in spirit, and said without disguise, I assure you, that one of you shall betray me. After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”
22 then the disciples looked one on another, being in pain to know who he meant. The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant.
23 now the favourite disciple of Jesus sat next to him at table. One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table at Jesus’ side, One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him.
24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, to ask who it was he meant. so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking. Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.”
25 then accordingly bending his head to Jesus's ear, he whisper'd, Lord, who is it? So that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”
26 Jesus answered, he it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have made it, and when he had made the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
27 and after he had taken the sop, Satan entred into him, then said Jesus to him, what you do, do quickly. Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.”
28 but the company at table did not know what he meant by saying so. Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him.
29 for as Judas had the purse, some of them thought, that Jesus had ordered him to buy what was necessary against the feast: or give something to the poor. Some thought that, because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor.
30 Judas then having received the sop, immediately went out: and it was night. So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night. As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.
31 When he was gone, Jesus said, now is the son of man glorified, and God is glorified by him. When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him.
32 as God is glorified by him, so God will glorify him in himself, and will immediately glorify him. If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once. If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.
33 my dear children, I am with you but for a little while, you shall seek me: but as I said to the Jews, so now I say to you, "where I am going you cannot come." Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.
34 a new commandment I give unto you, "that ye love one another; that you would have the same love for one another as I have had for you." A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
35 by this mutual love shall all men know that you are my disciples. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
36 Simon Peter said to him, Lord, where are you going? Jesus answered him, you cannot at present follow me, where I am going; but hereafter you shall. Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward.” Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.”
37 Peter said to him, Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for your sake. Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”
38 Jesus answered him, you lay down your life for my sake! Verily, verily I say unto thee, the cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice. Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times. Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!
