1 Six days before the passover Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, who had been dead, and raised to life again. Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 there a supper was provided for him; Martha was in waiting: but Lazarus was one of the guests that sat at table with him. So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.
3 but Mary taking a pound of the oil of spikenard which was very costly, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped them with her hair: so that the house was filled with the odour of the perfume. Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
4 whereupon one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, who was to betray him, But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected,
5 said, why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, to be given to the poor? “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.”
6 this he said, not out of any concern for the poor; but because being purse-bearer he used to pilfer what was in bank. He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.
7 then said Jesus, let her alone: against the day of my burial hath she kept this. Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial. “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial.
8 the poor you will always have with you; but me you will not always have. For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.” You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”
9 a great multitude of Jews knowing that Jesus was there, went thither, not for his sake only, but likewise to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.
10 for the chief priests had resolved to put even Lazarus to death; So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well,
11 because he was the occasion that many of the Jews left them, and believed on Jesus. because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in him.
12 The next day, a crowd of people that were come to the feast, hearing that Jesus was on the road to Jerusalem, took branches of palm-trees, The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem.
13 and went to meet him, crying, "Hosanna, blessed is the king of Israel that comes in the name of the Lord." So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!”
14 now Jesus was riding upon a young ass, which he got by the way; as it is written, And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written:
15 "fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy king comes sitting on an ass's colt." “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!” “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.”
16 this passage his disciples did not understand at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, they remembred how they had mounted him, and perceiv'd that those words related to him. His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.
17 the people that were present testified, that he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead. The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word.
18 and it was upon the rumour of this miracle, that the people crowded to him. The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to meet him.
19 the Pharisees therefore said among themselves, don't you perceive we lose ground? you see what a world of followers attend him. So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.” So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”
20 In the mean time, among the rest that came to worship at the feast, Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the festival.
21 there were certain Greeks, who address'd themselves to Philip, who was of Bethsaida in Galilee, saying, sir, we would fain see Jesus. So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.”
22 Philip went to tell Andrew: and then both of them mention'd it to Jesus. Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.
23 but Jesus answered them, saying, the time is come, when the son of man is to be glorified. And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
24 verily, verily I say unto you, when a corn of wheat is thrown into the ground, there it lies a single grain unless it dies: but if it die, it becomes very fruitful. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.
25 he that loveth his life, shall lose it: but he that sacrifices his life in this world, shall preserve it to eternity. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
26 if any man would serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there also shall my servant be: whoever serves me, him will my father reward. If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.
27 "Now is my soul troubled; what! shall I say, father, save me from this concern? but for this cause am I come, even for this very concern. “Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. “Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.
28 father, glorify thy name." then there came this voice from heaven, "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again." Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” Father, glorify your name!” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.”
29 the people therefore present who heard the noise, said it was thunder: others said, an angel spake to him. The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.
30 Jesus said, this voice came not for my sake, but for yours. Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not mine. Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit, not mine.
31 now is this world condemn'd: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.
32 as for me, when I shall be lifted up from the earth, I will draw all men unto me. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”
33 (this he said to signify what death he should die.) He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die. He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.
34 Upon which the people said to him, we have learnt from the law, that the Messiah is to live for ever: why do you say then, the son of man must be lift up? who is this son of man? So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” The crowd spoke up, “We have heard from the Law that the Messiah will remain forever, so how can you say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”
35 Jesus answer'd them, yet a little while is the light with you: walk while ye have the light, lest darkness surprize you: for he that walketh in darkness, does not know whither he goes. So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going.
36 while ye have the light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light, after having said these things, Jesus retir'd, and conceal'd himself from them. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.” When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.
37 But though he had done so many miracles in their presence, yet they did not believe on him: Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him, Even after Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him.
38 so that the passage of Esaias the prophet was fulfilled, where he says, "Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “Lord, who has believed what he heard from us, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: “Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
39 therefore they could not believe, according to what Esaias said in another place, "he hath blinded their eyes, Therefore they could not believe. For again Isaiah said, For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:
40 and hardned their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them." “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them.” “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn—and I would heal them.”
41 these things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him. Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him. Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about him.
42 nevertheless there were many even among the chief rulers, who believed on him; but they did not own it publickly for fear the Pharisees should excommunicate them. Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;
43 for they preferr'd their own reputation to the glory of God. for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God. for they loved human praise more than praise from God.
44 Then Jesus rais'd his voice, and said, he that believeth on me, does not so much believe on me, as on him that sent me. And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.
45 and he that contemplates me, contemplates him that sent me. And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me.
46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me, might not abide in darkness. I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
47 but if any man hear my words, and does not believe them, it is not I that condemn him: for I came not to condemn the world, but to save the world. If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. “If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.
48 he that rejecteth me, and does not embrace my doctrine, hath one that condemns him: the doctrine that I have delivered, that shall condemn him in the last day. The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day.
49 for I have not spoken for my self; but the father who sent me, he commission'd me, what I should teach, and what I should speak. For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak. For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken.
50 and I know that it is a commission of eternal life: whatever therefore I say, I deliver just as the father directed me. And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.” I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.”
