Ἐν
δὲ
ταῖς
ἡμέραις
ταύταις
πληθυνόντων
τῶν
μαθητῶν
ἐγένετο
γογγυσμὸς
τῶν
Ἑλληνιστῶν
πρὸς
τοὺς
Ἑβραίους
ὅτι
παρεθεωροῦντο
ἐν
τῇ
διακονίᾳ
τῇ
καθημερινῇ
αἱ
χῆραι
αὐτῶν
In
those
days when
the
disciples
were increasing in number,
the
Grecian Jews among them
began
to grumble
against
the
Hebraic Jews
because
their
widows
were being overlooked
in
the
daily
distribution of food.
And
in
those
days,
when the number
of the disciples
was multiplied,
there arose
a murmuring
of the Grecians
against
the Hebrews,
because
their
widows
were neglected
in
the daily
ministration.
2
Προσκαλεσάμενοι
δὲ
οἱ
δώδεκα
τὸ
πλῆθος
τῶν
μαθητῶν
εἶπαν
Οὐκ
ἀρεστόν
ἐστιν
ἡμᾶς
καταλείψαντας
τὸν
λόγον
τοῦ
Θεοῦ
διακονεῖν
τραπέζαις
So
the
Twelve
summoned
all
the
disciples
and said,
“It is
unacceptable
for us
to neglect
the
word
of God
in order to wait on
tables.
Then
the twelve
called
the multitude
of the disciples
[unto them], and said,
It is
not
reason
that we
should leave
the word
of God,
and serve
tables.

ἐπισκέψασθε
δέ
ἀδελφοί
ἄνδρας
ἐξ
ὑμῶν
μαρτυρουμένους
ἑπτὰ
πλήρεις
Πνεύματος

σοφίας
οὓς
καταστήσομεν
ἐπὶ
τῆς
χρείας
ταύτης
Therefore,
brothers,
select
from
among you
seven
men
confirmed to be
full
of the Spirit
and
wisdom.
We will appoint
this
responsibility
to them
Wherefore,
brethren,
look ye out
among
you
seven
men
of honest report,
full
of the Holy
Ghost
and
wisdom,
whom
we may appoint
over
this
business.

ἡμεῖς
δὲ
τῇ
προσευχῇ
καὶ
τῇ
διακονίᾳ
τοῦ

and
will devote ourselves
to
prayer
and
to the
ministry
of the
word.
But
we
will give ourselves continually
to prayer,
and
to the ministry
of the word.
5
Καὶ
ἤρεσεν
ὁ
λόγος
ἐνώπιον
παντὸς
τοῦ
πλήθους
καὶ
ἐξελέξαντο
Στέφανον
ἄνδρα
πλήρης*
πίστεως
καὶ
Πνεύματος
Ἁγίου
καὶ
Φίλιππον
καὶ
Πρόχορον
καὶ
Νικάνορα
καὶ
Τίμωνα
καὶ
Παρμενᾶν
καὶ
Νικόλαον
προσήλυτον
Ἀντιοχέα
This
proposal
pleased
the
whole
group.
They chose
Stephen,
a man
full
of faith
and
of the Holy
Spirit,
as well as
Philip,
Prochorus,
Nicanor,
Timon,
Parmenas,
and
Nicolas
from Antioch,
a convert to Judaism.
And
the saying
pleased
the whole
multitude:
and
they chose
Stephen,
a man
full
of faith
and
of the Holy
Ghost,
and
Philip,
and
Prochorus,
and
Nicanor,
and
Timon,
and
Parmenas,
and
Nicolas
a proselyte
of Antioch:
6
οὓς
ἔστησαν
ἐνώπιον
τῶν
ἀποστόλων
καὶ
προσευξάμενοι
ἐπέθηκαν
αὐτοῖς
τὰς
χεῖρας
They presented
these seven
to
the
apostles,
who
prayed
and laid
their
hands
on them.
Whom
they set
before
the apostles:
and
when they had prayed,
they laid
[their] hands
on
them.

Καὶ
ὁ
λόγος
τοῦ
Θεοῦ

ἐν

σφόδρα

τῇ
πίστει
So
the
word
of God
continued to spread.
The
number
of
disciples
in
Jerusalem
grew
rapidly,
and
a great
number
of
priests
became obedient
to the
faith.
And
the word
of God
increased;
and
the number
of the disciples
multiplied
in
Jerusalem
greatly;
and
a great
company
of the priests
were obedient
to the faith.

ἐν

Now
Stephen,
who was full
of grace
and
power,
was performing
great
wonders
and
signs
among
the
people.
And
Stephen,
full
of faith
and
power,
did
great
wonders
and
miracles
among
the people.

But
resistance arose
from
what
was called
the Synagogue
of the
Freedmen,
including
Cyrenians,
Alexandrians,
and
men
from
the provinces of Cilicia
and
Asia.
They began to argue
with
Stephen,
Then
there arose
certain
of
the synagogue,
which
is called
[the synagogue] of the Libertines,
and
Cyrenians,
and
Alexandrians,
and
of them of
Cilicia
and
of Asia,
disputing
with Stephen.

but
they could not
stand up to
his

or
the
Spirit
by whom
he spoke.
And
they were
not
able
to resist
the wisdom
and
the spirit
by which
he spake.

Then
they prompted
some men
to say,
“We heard
Stephen
speak
words
of blasphemy
against
Moses
and
against God.
Then
they suborned
men,
which said,
We have heard
him
speak
blasphemous
words
against
Moses,
and
[against] God.

So
they stirred up
the
people,
elders,
and
scribes
and
confronted Stephen.
They seized
him
and
brought him
before
the
Sanhedrin,
And
they stirred up
the people,
and
the elders,
and
the scribes,
and
came upon
[him], and caught
him,
and
brought
[him] to
the council,

For
we have heard
him

to us.
For

us.

All

And
all
that sat

saw

as it had been
the face
of an angel.
