Parallel Chapters Rebellion against Rehoboam
(1 Kings 12:1-15) 1Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone there to make him king. | 1Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king. | 1Then Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king. | 1And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for to Shechem were all Israel come to make him king. | 1Then Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone to Shechem to make him king. |
When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard this (he was in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon), he returned from Egypt. | 2And as soon as Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (for he was in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon), then Jeroboam returned from Egypt. | 2When Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (for he was in Egypt where he had fled from the presence of King Solomon), Jeroboam returned from Egypt. | 2And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was in Egypt, whither he had fled from the presence of Solomon the king, heard it, that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt. | 2When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard about it--for he was in Egypt where he had fled from King Solomon's presence--Jeroboam returned from Egypt. |
So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and all Israel went to Rehoboam and said to him: | 3And they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all Israel came and said to Rehoboam, | 3So they sent and summoned him. When Jeroboam and all Israel came, they spoke to Rehoboam, saying, | 3And they sent and called him. So Jeroboam and all Israel came and spake to Rehoboam, saying, | 3So they summoned him. Then Jeroboam and all Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam: |
"Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you." | 4“Your father made our yoke heavy. Now therefore lighten the hard service of your father and his heavy yoke on us, and we will serve you.” | 4"Your father made our yoke hard; now therefore lighten the hard service of your father and his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you." | 4Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore ease thou somewhat the grievous servitude of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee. | 4"Your father made our yoke difficult. Therefore, lighten your father's harsh service and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you." |
Rehoboam answered, "Come back to me in three days." So the people went away. | 5He said to them, “Come to me again in three days.” So the people went away. | 5He said to them, "Return to me again in three days." So the people departed. | 5And he said unto them, Come again unto me after three days. And the people departed. | 5Rehoboam replied, "Return to me in three days." So the people left. |
Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. "How would you advise me to answer these people?" he asked. | 6Then King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he was yet alive, saying, “How do you advise me to answer this people?” | 6Then King Rehoboam consulted with the elders who had served his father Solomon while he was still alive, saying, "How do you counsel me to answer this people?" | 6And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people? | 6Then King Rehoboam consulted with the elders who had served his father Solomon when he was alive, asking, "How do you advise me to respond to these people?" |
They replied, "If you will be kind to these people and please them and give them a favorable answer, they will always be your servants." | 7And they said to him, “If you will be good to this people and please them and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.” | 7They spoke to him, saying, "If you will be kind to this people and please them and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever." | 7And they spake unto him, saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever. | 7They replied, "If you will be kind to these people and please them by speaking kind words to them, they will be your servants forever." |
But Rehoboam rejected the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him. | 8But he abandoned the counsel that the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him and stood before him. | 8But he forsook the counsel of the elders which they had given him, and consulted with the young men who grew up with him and served him. | 8But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men that were brought up with him, that stood before him. | 8But he rejected the advice of the elders who had advised him, and he consulted with the young men who had grown up with him, the ones serving him. |
He asked them, "What is your advice? How should we answer these people who say to me, 'Lighten the yoke your father put on us'?" | 9And he said to them, “What do you advise that we answer this people who have said to me, ‘Lighten the yoke that your father put on us’?” | 9So he said to them, "What counsel do you give that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, 'Lighten the yoke which your father put on us'?" | 9And he said unto them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, which have spoken to me, saying, Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us? | 9He asked them, "What message do you advise we send back to these people who said to me, 'Lighten the yoke your father put on us?" |
The young men who had grown up with him replied, "The people have said to you, 'Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make our yoke lighter.' Now tell them, 'My little finger is thicker than my father's waist. | 10And the young men who had grown up with him said to him, “Thus shall you speak to the people who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you lighten it for us’; thus shall you say to them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s thighs. | 10The young men who grew up with him spoke to him, saying, "Thus you shall say to the people who spoke to you, saying, 'Your father made our yoke heavy, but you make it lighter for us.' Thus you shall say to them, 'My little finger is thicker than my father's loins! | 10And the young men that were brought up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer the people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it somewhat lighter for us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins. | 10Then the young men who had grown up with him told him, "This is what you should say to the people who said to you, 'Your father made our yoke heavy, but you, make it lighter on us!' This is what you should say to them: 'My little finger is thicker than my father's loins. |
My father laid on you a heavy yoke; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.'" | 11And now, whereas my father laid on you a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. My father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.’” | 11Whereas my father loaded you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.'" | 11For whereas my father put a heavy yoke upon you, I will put more to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. | 11Now therefore, my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, but I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I, with barbed whips.'" |
Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, as the king had said, "Come back to me in three days." | 12So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king said, “Come to me again the third day.” | 12So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day as the king had directed, saying, "Return to me on the third day." | 12So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king bade, saying, Come again to me on the third day. | 12So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, just as the king had ordered, saying, "Return to me on the third day." |
The king answered them harshly. Rejecting the advice of the elders, | 13And the king answered them harshly; and forsaking the counsel of the old men, | 13The king answered them harshly, and King Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the elders. | 13And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men, | 13Then the king answered them harshly. King Rehoboam rejected the elders' advice |
he followed the advice of the young men and said, "My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions." | 14King Rehoboam spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it. My father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.” | 14He spoke to them according to the advice of the young men, saying, "My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions." | 14And answered them after the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add thereto: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. | 14and spoke to them according to the young men's advice, saying, "My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it; my father disciplined you with whips, but I, with barbed whips." |
So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from God, to fulfill the word the LORD had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah the Shilonite. | 15So the king did not listen to the people, for it was a turn of affairs brought about by God that the LORD might fulfill his word, which he spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat. | 15So the king did not listen to the people, for it was a turn of events from God that the LORD might establish His word, which He spoke through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat. | 15So the king hearkened not unto the people: for the cause was of God, that the LORD might perform his word, which he spake by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat. | 15The king did not listen to the people because the turn of events came from God, in order that the LORD might carry out His word that He had spoken through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat. |
The Kingdom Divided
(1 Kings 12:16-19) 16When all Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, they answered the king: "What share do we have in David, what part in Jesse's son? To your tents, Israel! Look after your own house, David!" So all the Israelites went home. | 16And when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king, “What portion have we in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. Each of you to your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, David.” So all Israel went to their tents. | 16When all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them the people answered the king, saying, "What portion do we have in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. Every man to your tents, O Israel; Now look after your own house, David." So all Israel departed to their tents. | 16And when all Israel saw that the king would not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? and we have none inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel: and now, David, see to thine own house. So all Israel went to their tents. | 16When all Israel saw that the king had not listened to them, the people answered the king: What portion do we have in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. Israel, each man to your tent; David, look after your own house now! So all Israel went to their tents. |
But as for the Israelites who were living in the towns of Judah, Rehoboam still ruled over them. | 17But Rehoboam reigned over the people of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah. | 17But as for the sons of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them. | 17But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them. | 17But as for the Israelites living in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them. |
King Rehoboam sent out Adoniram, who was in charge of forced labor, but the Israelites stoned him to death. King Rehoboam, however, managed to get into his chariot and escape to Jerusalem. | 18Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was taskmaster over the forced labor, and the people of Israel stoned him to death with stones. And King Rehoboam quickly mounted his chariot to flee to Jerusalem. | 18Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the forced labor, and the sons of Israel stoned him to death. And King Rehoboam made haste to mount his chariot to flee to Jerusalem. | 18Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram that was over the tribute; and the children of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. But king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem. | 18Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was in charge of the forced labor, but the Israelites stoned him to death. However, King Rehoboam managed to get into his chariot to flee to Jerusalem. |
So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day. | 19So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day. | 19So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day. | 19And Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day. | 19Israel is in rebellion against the house of David until today. |
